So with the sudden drop in temps this week, I realized I need new winter coats for both boys. B has one, but it is not great for the car (it's more a big, play outside kind of coat). I have no idea what happened to whatever coat S wore at that age but I can't find it. So I need new coats ASAP. I have literally every store imaginable closeby, so spam me with your favorites (S is a 5/6 or an XS, and B is a 3T). Both boys' style is fairly sporty with S adding a splash of preppy in there. Nothing too fancy for either, they live in sweats and jeans.
Also, side note, S is in the high back booster with a regular seat belt. Do I still need to worry about if his jacket is poofy or not?

I picked up a cheapie for an extra at the Children’s Place. It’s light weight, fits in the car seat, and was only $20 (they also do free shipping). I’ve never purchased anything from there before, and I’m super impressed with the quality of it. We have only had it for three days, however.

I like the gap thin puffers for the car seat. I saw target is carrying some this year too.

This was basically the jacket I had for both boys last winter. I loved them. I went to the website last night and showed the pic to S and he said he didn't like it because he didn't like the poofiness and he didn't like that it was one color.

The Gap one is the one he picked out, but in the weird camo color. I don't like it, and I do want something that he could wear in the car and at recess etc. although maybe that will work for B, since he has the super warm coat for everything else. hmmm... And I'll check out the primary one, I've never bought from them before!

My kids both have lighter puffer coats for the car; B's is North Face and J's is from Costco the paradox brand. Then they each have a snowsuit for playing. It's kinda annoying to switch the coats, but when I drop them off at daycare I take them off and take them back to the car. They leave their snowsuits at daycare and I bring them home on the weekends for washing and playing in. B's snowsuit is from Costco as well, and I buy it in July as soon as they're out.

Any chance you a softshell with a fleece underneath would suffice for car rides?

I am very pleased with the heavier puffer, quality is great. I also purchased one from Dillards to compare it to (and y'all know my love affair with Dillards), but we ended up preferring the Primary one. If you end up ordering definitely look for a coupon code online, they usually do 20 or 25% off for new customers.

Any chance you a softshell with a fleece underneath would suffice for car rides? Yes, I'm really looking for something that can be used for everything. His school is a 2 minute drive from our house, so I'm looking for something I can put on at home, and he can wear to school and for the rest of the day and have with him for recess etc. I'm mostly looking for S. B has the super warm one for snow play, and his DC doesn't go outside if it's pretty cold out, so I will probably just get him one of the lighterweight puffer ones for daily use. S is being a pain with what he doesn't like, etc.

I was looking at the heavier puffer there but the price was a lot compared to the Old Navy/Gap coats. But I'm concerned b/c the sizes look like 4/5 or 6/7 and he is on the small side so I think the 6/7 will be huge on him, but the 4/5 might not last the winter. Maybe I'll just suck it up and buy the lighterweight one from Gap that he likes (I can't stand the camo version of it, but he is allowed his own sense of style I suppose) and make sure he wears a fleece or warm sweatshirt underneath

I got H a Columbia coat with the zip in fleece liner and I think something like that would be safe in a booster with a seatbelt. H is pretty small, I got her an xxs. I’m sure it’ll fit her for at least 1 more winter, if not 2, plus S will be able to wear it for a few years so I’m ok with spending a bit more. She wears it to school and hasn’t complained at all about being too cold even when it was super cold.

Relevant. (Lol)
I had a fifth grade teacher that I was absolutely enamored with. He “didn’t believe“ in wearing coats unless he was outside for an extended period of time. He would tell us, often, that it was a waste of time to put the coat on and zip it up and then unzip it and take it off when we were just walking from house to building/building to house. I was such a fan of his that I would come home with this knowledge, declaring I would no longer be wearing a coat. My parents disagreed, and told me that I could share with Mr. Donnell that he would be paying for the doctor’s visits if I ended up with a case of pneumonia. I kept my coat on.

I abide by his practice 😂. There is always a coat in the car, but I seldom wear it. I do put a coat on my child though!

I saw a couple reviewers say it ran a touch small and I'd probably agree with that. IDK if that helps but just passing it along.

A lot of the gear we buy is from Scandinavia (thanks sis) I tried to find some, but not all are available in the USA. This brand has nice stuff, but not cheap. www.polarnopyretusa.com

Target has $20 puffers right now. I can’t speak to the warmth.
C had an awesome Eddie Bauer one and now has a North Face I got on sale last year. Both are great for the car. I have a thicker no name brand from Macy’s for snow play but the puffers he has had are warm enough for everything else.

I bought M a coat from Oshkosh in September when they were having a sale. It’s pink, of course, and reversible. Puffy on one side and furry on the other.
She hates it because it makes her look like she has muscles. 🙄
I already had to take it back once because the zipper kept getting stuck. I may not take the tags off and see if they’ll refund me the money so I can get something else.
I guess I’ll take her highness to the store with me instead of buying online. Problem is, not a lot of stores carry a bunch of coats around here.

I saw some great deals at TJMaxx today for boys winter coats. I was this close to buying C an Under Armour one for $30 but he doesn’t need a new one so I resisted.

We ended up with the heavy weight puffer posted here. We both love it. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a coat still. It is warm, a nice fit, and has the little thumbholes which S is obsessed with. 2 thumbs up!
