The boat fire yesterday in CA was is so strange.
The Coast Guard has suspended the search because they think they have anyone who went in the water.
they are still trying to get on the boat I think

It's really tragic. All those poor people. It’s been the top story where I am and I can’t even imagine it. Just very tragic. It reminds me of the wharehouse fire in Oakland a couple years back that killed a similar number of people. I think they’ve suspended search and rescue because the boat is at the bottom of the water and is upside down. It’s not structurally sound for rescuers.

On GMA this morning, they said the Captain tried to go below where the divers were and the ceiling tiles were already on fire. Wouldn’t even one of the 30 or so guests have run up the stairs?

I don’t know how I would have reacted in that scenario, and it looks like insanely cramped quarters/ with smoke and everything I’m sure it was confusing. I just hope there was no malicious involvement.

Also the news last night mentioned that the people sleeping below deck wouldn't have been able to unlock the doors. Which seems completely crazy and an obvious and huge safety violation but I have no idea about those kind of standards on boats. Apparently this was an old vessel retrofitted for it's new function, so who knows if that played into the way the doors and locks functioned as well.

My guess is that the fire started on that level (I believe the kitchen was there) and with people sleeping they probably inhaled a lot of smoke before even realizing what was happening. It’s really sad. But I also hope that because they were sleeping people didn’t suffer as much. It’s just the only way I can cope with the news.

The boat is at an angle in 60+ feet of water but its a 75 ft vessel so they are unable at the moment to get in it to recover anyone else safely according to the CG at the press conference.
Its so sad.

Honestly, this is not a bad compromise. Unless "hunting rifle" includes AR type weapons.

I’ve seen comments by divers who had previously taken trips on that boat and it sounds like there’s only one very narrow doorway in and out to get below decks so it was probably cut off quickly by the fire.

I’m getting flashbacks of the duck boat in Missouri that flooded and sank. It’s so horrible.

They arent changing the policy about open carry, they are publicly asking people not to. That means they wont do anything if somebody does carry in their store, And there is no mention of conceal carry.

its better than oh we'll let everyone walk around with their dick out.
The backlash is going to be every 2A person is going to make a point of walking around the store because they can, daring someone to say something.

There was one staircase and a trap door above a bunk. The crew was awake and above so that's why they got off, and swam to another boat but the fire was too intense to rescue anyone on board.

Yeah. Politely asking the assholes who like to wave their dicks guns around not to do so isn't going to do a damn thing. And I'd wager it'll make many of them want to grandstand even more. Ugh.

There was one staircase and a trap door above a bunk. The crew was awake and above so that's why they got off, and swam to another boat but the fire was too intense to rescue anyone on board. This whole event is terrifying. I read that it was recently refurbished so I don't know how there weren't fire alarms and/or extinguishers.
But yes, generally the way boats are set up there's only one narrow hatch with stairs. But I'd hope when there are that many bunks on board there would be another required.
The distress call indicated they were locked down there, but I see no reason the hatch would be locked, and hope the guy just meant trapped.
I also feel bad for the crew if there was nothing they could do, because they are going to be harassed for bailing.
