There is a special election on Tuesday for NC 9. This was the election where the Republicans cheated so they had to call for a new election. Two guys named Dan. Dan McCready seems like a great guy and Dan Brown was one of the architects of the bathroom bill so hoping he loses. It's of course a heavily gerrymandered district with some progressive parts of Charlotte and some rural areas. I've been nervous about this for weeks. I feel like NC-9 and the Virginia November elections will sort of set the tone for 2020. Given the absolute onslaught of commercials, I think the GOP is scared. I keep ABC on while I work and I swear to God, it’s every 3rd one.

ICYMI (and you probably did lol), Moms Demand scored a HUGE victory yesterday. We've been politely pressuring Wegmans to ban open carry in their stores and they FINALLY did. So Minerva, we can finally go for coffee lol I went to my first Moms Demand Action meeting today! I learned more about the great work the organization has done in the past several years and what they are continuing to do at the state and national level. I didn’t expect a lot of people in Orange County, CA but I was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn’t have guessed that either. How often are meetings? I might have to find out where they are held.

Related to that, I couldn't find October's date - and I assume it's at the same meeting place? Do you mind pm'ing me. I have signed up with them and I know I'll get reminders, I'd just like to add it to my calendar asap to make sure I don't end up double booked. Thanks.

This is not related to anything in particular, but I was visiting my grandma yesterday and saw "jury" written on her calendar. I asked her if she had been summoned, and she had. Her response was "if those assholes in Washington don't have to obey subpoenas, I sure as hell don't have to serve on a jury!" 🤣🤣🤣
In her defense, she is 88, rarely drives anymore, and isn't the most steady on her feet. I'm sure some poor person at the courthouse will get an earful very soon.

YGPM Not to get all triangulation like, but could you pm me the date and location too. The site I just tried with my zip doesn’t show anything close, so I don’t know if I’m missing something or if it’s only in North County.

We have chapters in all 50 states but we may not have one super close to you. If you feel comfortable PMing ne your general area I can dig into it

Yesterday my kid (1st grade) informed me that this week they're going to talk about what to do if a bad person comes into their school. This drill involves throwing things at the bad person, and a game called sheep shepherd wolf. WTAF WTAF!!!

What. The. FUCK
(As far as I know they haven't done any drills with the kids, so there's that)

FUCK (As far as I know they haven't done any drills with the kids, so there's that) I remember at some point last year seeing a rhyme on the door of the big kids' room that seemed very "Active shooter response" to me (it was to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle, I think). It's not on the door anymore but I was definitely unsettled. After El Paso and Cleveland, I've been super worried because N's room at DC faces the street and one wall is basically all windows. We haven't heard anything about them doing drills with the kids, at least not in the Infant/T1 rooms. I've been meaning to ask, though.

FUCK (As far as I know they haven't done any drills with the kids, so there's that) They did drills with DS while he was in preschool (a SN class within a public school). His teachers were great, so the kids mostly thought it was a game. But it was so heartbreaking to all involved that the school district thought it was necessary. And by pre-K, a few of the kids with older siblings understood what was happening and told their peers, which was not at all fun to deal with.

I was a 'floor warden' at my old office - basically the one who runs around the floor urging people to get to the stairwells during fire drills. It was hard as our yearly training went from basically fire/weather emergencies to including active shooter scenarios more and more, and it was really upsetting to see the protocol manuals for our receptionists and facilities people regarding possible intruders. On one hand, training and preparedness is a good thing, objectively viewed - but it hurts the heart when it's other people we have to be prepared against.

I cried huge tears last year when my two-year-old had the first intruder drill. Kids thought they were just playing a game of "hide from the bad guys" and the teachers were the "bad guys" but it was definitely practice for the real thing. They did it once a month. I don't know when my older kid's school will have their drill, but I know they do one each semester. The thought of a kindergarten class being taught to throw things instead of hiding hurts. Ours is tomorrow.
We get about a week notification.
