Whaaaa!!!! I'm biased, we grew up like ten minutes from the NYS fair grounds and always go multiple times per summer. Ours doesn't start for another week and half. Team NYS Fair! Forever and always. I’m currently in a state with no state fair. I was horrified and confused when I discovered this. There are states with no fairs? That's a thing? I love the fair!

This is also where my H is. He should be a 100% lock for the entire Republican ticket. He did not vote for Trump in 2016 and won't in 2020. He hasn't totally bought into something Bill Maher said that's stuck with both of us - that a vote for anyone but the Democrat candidate is a vote for Trump (as in, any nonvote, write-in, or vote for 3rd party), but he's close. That should terrify the GOP. It probably won't, but it should. This is my NH-based FIL as well. He didn’t vote for 45 (he voted for Gary Johnson). But he told us last week that he’ll never vote for another Republican or Libertarian for the rest of his days because of this current Administration. And this is someone who lives in one swing state, will most likely be moving to another swing state (NC) or a red state (TN) within the next 5 years when he retires. A vote for anyone with an R or L next to their name is actively supporting 45’s policies. My ILs feel this way too. I am so relieved because FIL is very conservative and was initially attracted to the Tea Party during the aughts. But they hate Trump. And they have also become in favor of common sense gun control and universal healthcare (a complete 180).

Speaking about people changing, I have a lot of respect for my husband's uncle. He is a Southern Baptist minister in his late 50s who, having grown up in South Georgia, has always been conservative and Republican. But he hates Trump and said he would leave the Southern Baptist church altogether if he weren't so close to retirement. He even said the Southern Baptists owe Bill Clinton an apology for treating him badly and then excusing Trump. He got another awakening when his daughter married a black man and it opened up his eyes to what racism is (he had no problem with the relationship and even performed the wedding despite feeling out of his comfort zone when the relationship first began). We even have good political conversations and he read both Michelle Obama's book and Kamala's and reads my liberal book suggestions. He said he may not always agree but he will never be a single issue voter again. So while he may not be ready to embrace the Democratic party right now, it makes me happy to see someone be open to thinking about their own views more critically.

We went to our county fair last night and all rode the merry-go-round (not my idea) and the attendant literally PUSHED the merry-go-round for the first half of the ride. Like he manually was pushing to get it going, but for like a solid couple minutes. My eyes were the widest they've ever been. SKETCH. And that was the only ride I rode 😆

Of course now my mom throws this rule out the window and pays for the grandkids to ride them

This is what gives me hope to keep working at things with my family, so thank you for posting this. I also wonder what makes some people more open to change. Your husband's uncle could be my mom and her H just in a different southern state and not pastors but members of a Southern Baptist church. During our heated conversation last night, I heard approximately 457 times that "this is how we grew up," and thus stunting them from becoming more tolerant.

To be clear, this has to do with approval ratings.

I know most of us aren't in TX but there's an address in the replies if anyone wants to send flowers, prayer cards ect. I can't imagine having to go through this alone.

I have a dumb question: are the posters in this thread all diehard Dems? Just curious. Not a dumb question! I think the range is from moderate to very left with the majority embracing the official/stated Dem platform. I am far to the left and feel like sometimes my views are a little out there for this board. But I don’t mind being labeled the board Northern Cali hippie. I’ve voted dem in every election I’ve ever voted in but have gotten way more progressive over the last 10-15 years. .

They can ride anything they want at an actual, permanent, amusement park.

I have a dumb question: are the posters in this thread all diehard Dems? Just curious. Some of us used to be Republicans... (me). I saw the light during the Obama administration and am horrified that I used to actually admire Sarah Palin. Wtf to me. But at that time the only political influence I had was what I heard from my evangelical church and parents. Once I started doing my own research and as I matured (I was still in college in 2008) I realized that I am actually very, very liberal.

Thanks everyone! I am very liberal and progressive but not a registered Democrat and not always too impressed with the Democratic Party, though I usually vote for Democrats. Just wanted to know who I was chatting with here. 😊
