Well this is a terrifying quote from the Turning Point Teen Summit. I knew he thought this way but damn, to actually say it out loud. “I have an Article 2 where I have the right to do whatever I want as president,” he said to applause, referring to the part of the US Constitution that gives him executive - but not unlimited - power. “But I don’t even talk about that.” He honestly thinks oversight is not for him and he can go unchecked. Thats why they arent complying with subpoenas, appearances, etc. He truly thinks the presidency is omnipotent.
and the amount of regular people who agree with him is terrifying and shows a huge lack in our education system.

Seriously. How did so many people miss the day in elementary school when they taught about the three equal but separate branches of government? As if checks and balances are just for funsies, or when democrats need to be "put in their place."

Well, I was watching Titanic and Apollo 13 with some friends in their early 30's this weekend....frighteningly, they had no idea that Titanic was a 'real boat' and one asked during the middle of Apollo 13 if the astronauts survived. And these ladies had completed college (one had a master's in sociology).
That said, I suspect many many people don't get much out of history classes at any level. Witness all the folks who don't realize that back in Lincoln's day the Democrats and Republicans were pretty much the opposite polarities of today's parties.

A guy I went to HS with married someone 10/11 years younger. When they were dating they went to see Pearl Harbor. She asked if it 'really happened'.
Nope just a made up holiday in December I guess.

And these are all pretty normal people - not even dealing with the conspiracy people who claim that the moon landing was a fake, etc. Pearl Harbor is pretty bad though :-)....it's mentioned every single year in the US media.
I think I may have convinced one of the women that Captain America was a real historical figure in WW II though.....

We were talking over post-movie snacks about how many of the characters in Titanic were 'real' people, and how many movies will base their characters on historical figures but then fictionalize some of their actions (like the Titanic captain - I believe there's no consensus on exactly what he did at the end there). I just said, like Captain America in First Avenger - based on a real figure during the War but of course the later movies are all fiction. I'm telling you, she really believed it. I did tell her later I was making that part up. I kind of hope she doesn't think the Tesseract was real, but then again, hmm, what exactly is in Area 51? One thing I like about Captain America fan fiction - in most stories, it is totally predicated that every single person born after WW II had a chapter in history on the his exploits and actually remembers it. Of course, have to have that universal historical literacy to explain why everyone tends to just follow 'Captain's orders' in a crisis. Now if only in real life would we have some common historical literacy among the general population....or at least at 1600 Pennsylvania right now.

Not at all politics related but I feel you all know me and DD so well. C, who will be 3 on Monday, always insists on chopsticks when we order takeaway and happily devours at least half of my drunken noodle (and our local Thai doesn't make it very mild). It cracks me up.

Has anyone else been watching Loudest Voice on showtime?
We are about a week behind, on the episode about the 2008 election.
The makeup team did an amazing job on Russell Crowe, he looks like he’s about to keel over with a heart attack any second. (Also, like it needs to be said, Roger Ailes was a dick.)

If you scroll by a picture of Boris Johnson, he looks eerily like DT. What the heck!? Catching up... I told all my co-workers yesterday that the UK just elected the Donald Trump of the UK.

Also lunches, music, gym, day school, night school, school buses, and teachers. Oh But hey here is a voucher for an Uber ride to a privately owned, secreted owned DeVos school.

Gut wrenching. Wait until episode 4. The whole series thus far is so well done but so so so scary. We are seriously not that far off. I think if you had made a show about events between 2013 and 2018 people would think it was far fetched fearmongering. And yet. Did you watch this week's episode yet (episode 5)? Hoooooly shit. I don't want to spoil if you haven't but damn, it hit hard.

I can't find a way to link it, but NPR has a video of Nina Totenberg interviewing RBG and RBG says something about how a senator, when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, (she can't remember which one...) said she would be dead in 6 months. But now, he is dead. And she has a good chuckle. It's great. Oh wait, I think it might be the 44 second clip in the middle of this story www.npr.org/2019/07/24/744633713/justice-ginsburg-i-am-very-much-alive

If it was a suicide attempt, he's a bloody coward.
Usually I have a lot of sympathy for those who attempt suicide. They need help. This is just an evil, pathetic man who doesn't want to face up to the consequences of his actions.
