We're renting a house for a week in the cape and will be spending (hopefully) the majority of time at the beach. I've never rented a place there before or stayed in this part of the cape, so I don't really know how far the beach is. From what I understand it's a short walk to a private beach. Anywho, do you have any tips for little kids at the beach?

I am finding going to the beach pretty easy now that we have a full on toddler. We pack some beach toys, a couple of small construction vehicle type toys, and a couple of animals to bury, and the kids are happy for hours. Keeping snacks/lunch free of sand is the hardest part so I try to remember to pack extra water for rinsing hands.

Commenting to follow because we have a house in Maine for a week in July and I'll take all the ideas.

DD doesn't like stuff on her hands, especially sticky stuff. I know sand isn't sticky, but it sticks. We're going to a playground with a sandbox this weekend and I'm going to see how she does.

My nephew is similar and also doesn't like being barefoot and was not a big fan of sandboxes (he seems to be getting better about it) but he was totally happy to run around barefoot on the beach and play with the sand so hopefully the beach will be novel enough that she won't mind it.

Bring a package of cornstarch with you. It works wonders for getting off sand (just sprinkle it on and rub off) plus it's edible, so you don't need to worry about getting it all off, or getting it on food, or accidental ingestion. We have a lightspeed tent from Costco which I like because it provides shade and a sand free area to relax in. As far as sand toys, we usually bring some buckets and shovels and these kind of water squirters:

Bug spray. I’m sure it’s beach dependent but sometimes if there’s no wind the bugs come out in NJ.

Bug spray. I’m sure it’s beach dependent but sometimes if there’s no wind the bugs come out in NJ. this reminds me of when we honeymooned in Jamaica. The sunsets were so beautiful so on the first night we sat on the beach as the sun went down. We couldn't figure out why the beach cleared out so fast until the sun hit the horizon. A million bajillon biting flies came out from the sand almost immediately. It was insanity and we high tailed it off the beach so fast.
