This floors me every time I hear it. Are you talking about the drop your middle name replace it with your maiden name situation? I don’t think it’s a thing here in the Northeast. Yes. So Sarah Jane Smith becomes Sarah Smith Johnson. I’ve known a couple women who did not take their husband’s name, but I can only think of one person I know IRL who kept the middle name she was born with and dropped her maiden (last) name. For us, it is just he males and they take the mother's maiden name. If their parents also give them a middle name, then they add that. So they could have first name, middle name, mother's maiden, father's last name.

Okay wait. So most women who get married forfeit their middle name all together? Over here most common is Sarah Jane Smith becomes Sarah Jane Johnson-Smith or lose the maiden name so it’ll become Sarah Jane Johnson. I’m to oddball officially I’m first name maiden name-husband name, but for the most part I just still go by my maiden name. ETA I don’t have a middle name. |

I like this bc I really enjoy names that descend in # of syllables. 3-2-1. peachsmama is there a family name that could be used as a middle name? Your mother’s maiden name or similar? That is fairly popular/common here in the south. Before getting married, my middle name was my mother’s maiden name. My sister’s middle name was my Dad’s middle name. Ha! As I read this I just realized both of my kids are 3-2-1 (my last name is super short 1 syllable). I did not plan this, but maybe subconsciously I do too! |

I made the change when I legally changed my name after I got married. So I changed it at the social security office. My drivers license only has first and (married) last name on it. It just felt weird to me to no longer be a (maiden name), it's been a part of my identity for so long! Maybe b/c I was 38 when I got married? I don't know. Also, I still use my maiden name at work, so my email, business cards, etc all say maiden name. MH just asked me the other day if I was going to change that at the new place. |

Josie is 3-3-1 officially and Charlie is 1-2-1. They are both 2-1 with their nicknames and last names. Writing it out like this, I’m surprised the syllables work for their given names.

jewels I was 25 (a week shy from 26) when I got married, it still felt weird to lose my maiden name, so I didn’t 😉. I also had this weird thing about me wanting to be my sisters sister first and not my SIL’s sister, I know crazy.

guster, I didn't have a middle name so when I got married I made my maiden name my middle. I always wanted a daughter to be named my maiden name but DH's last name and my maiden name are a mouthful together so it never would have worked. I feel a strong bond to my maiden name and wanted to keep it in some way.

Well if you’re taking your husband’s last name you would have to do all that. But yes. SS card, drivers license, etc. I went from EAB to EBL and had to legally change everything. |

Hi. We drove into the metro to return luggage I ordered online without realizing how big it was. Picked out something new and then took the kids to lunch. Then I found a new playground to stop at and the kids have been playing for over an hour and have made all sorts of new friends. It’s so cute. I’m ready to head back home but they are having too much fun to pull them away. I guess that’s one drawback of living in a small town... we’re usually the only ones at the park durning the day.

flamingo what sounds good for reverse syllables? J has 1-1-3 and N has 2-2-3 (is Margaret 2 or 3? I think I say "mar-gret". We are focusing on shorter first names or even 4 letter to keep with the other two. I have 11 cousins on my mom's side and our middle names were all our moms' maiden name, which is kind of fun. I would do ascending, so 1/2-2-3. (I personally would consider Margaret a 3, even though i tend to run it together when I say it, lol). I love the maiden name thing...mine was one syllable and not overly attractive, so I didn't use it for either of my kids. Sorry, Dad. I broke my own preference with C, she's 3-4-1. But her middle name is a family name of long-standing on my mom's side, and I figured someday she'll get married and drop it and be 3-1-lastname (hahaha, how appropriate after today's discussion!) |

Without my double first name (which people always shorten to just my first name, even when corrected— super annoying) my first and maiden last names almost rhymes. Thanks mom and dad!

We just got slammed by a storm. Our electric went out and the thunder is rattling my house.. Poor boys were playing in the basement when the electric went out and FLEW up those stairs lol.

I've never heard of moving your maiden name to your middle name, although I like the idea of it. But my maiden name was a vegetable that people tend to not like, so no thanks. Especially what it did with my first married last name.

I didn’t move my maiden name to my middle name. I kept my middle because my maiden name is a color and I didn’t want to keep it. I had some mail sent to my dad’s after that, and I think he was shocked that I didn’t keep my maiden name even though he didn’t say. I almost think he was a little disappointed. I thought it was a southern thing to keep your maiden name, but maybe not.
