This might be better suited for the cloth diaper board, but I don't go there so I'm asking here.
Has anyone done cloth training pants instead of or addition to pull ups? We're getting close to starting potty training, but I'm hesitant to use underwear right away and was thinking cloth training pants would be a good compromise.

I'm no where near potty training (at least I like to think so) but I had a discussion about this with my mom the other day. Apparently you can buy a pack of Hanes training underwear. My mother was ADAMANT that you don't need to buy specific training diapers, either pullups or cloth ones. I would assume you would wash them similar to cloth diapers. Cold or warm rinse, hot wash with the FULL recommended amount of detergent, cold rinse.

I'm going to +1 what sheila's mom said. We cloth diaper and for #1 we tried training diapers (cloth and/or pull ups) and neither really worked. But by far the best investment was the Gerber training pants. They are underwear with a few extra layers in the bottom. we bought a dozen or so. so rip that bandaid and go for the tiny undies! edit - we just washed them in the laundry since it wasn't a full load of pee and poop. just a few pairs here and there. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=gerber+training+pants

I'll definitely look at the Gerber training pants. We never cloth diapered since we didn't have a dryer the first 18 months and daycare wouldn't do cloth diapers.

As you might remember from our BMB, I'm a fan of the naked to commando progression of potty training. When DS finally started wearing underwear, we did use some of the thicker training underwear just to have more peace of mind in case underwear caused a regression (they didn't.) Amazon has lots of options, search "training pant."
If not also nap/night training & you think your kid may wake and ask to potty - or you will prompt potty at MOTN wake ups - pull ups are way easier than taking a diaper off and back on at 3am, IMO.

We did the naked to commando progression back in May when we trained DS, and it worked really well for us. DS didn't start consistently wearing any underwear until about 2 weeks ago. I feel that if we'd put him in underwear (even training underwear) right away, he would have thought it was a quasi-diaper and had more accidents. We also night trained at the same time - naked on the bottom for naps and nighttime sleeping. DS is 27 months now, and he was 25 months when we started to train him.
