How is teeth brushing going for your babies?
We’ve been doing some form of teeth brushing for a few months. We started with the little banana teether that has a toothbrush at the end and he loved that at first. All smiles while we sang a song and brushed his teeth for maybe 30 seconds. He slowly got less and less interested in it and now maybe lets me brush his teeth for 1 second before pushing it away and turning his head. Some days as soon as we go in the bathroom to brush, he starts whining and turning his head. I tried an actual kids toothbrush last night and he wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. We’ve tried different songs, brushing our own teeth at the same time, pretending to brush our teeth with his toothbrush, letting him do it himself, and trying to do it at a different point in the bedtime routine.
He only has 8 teeth, but I want to get back into a good routine and I’m stuck. How is it going for your babies? Any tricks?

Sorry no tricks. Seb got teeth at four months so I figured we start that habit right away. He gets pulled out of the tub, wrapped in a towel, qtips and teeth brushed. I still just have the rubber finger brush but I guess I should get a regular one soon? DH and I are supposed to have dentist appts soon so I figured I'd ask then when to start toothpaste too. Oh his arms are in the towel which is helpful but he's a chill kid and that's been the routine since 4m so idk if every LO would tolerate that. Right now he thinks it's hilarious to stick his tongue out so I can brush it.

We started with the fluoride free toothpaste and rubber finger brush, and she loved the taste so she's always been happy to do it. She's still getting a bed time bottle, so for the past few weeks we've switched to a kid toothbrush and a speck of fluoride paste after her bottle, and so far so good. I think it's really just the taste that she likes.

Daycare brushes her teeth with the little rubber thing and that's been good enough until now. I should prob start brushing more regularly. I'll prob use the tiny toothbrush with the training toothpaste (we get fluoride in our water supply so I'm ok with that for now).
As far as fussiness goes...my strategy with DS until he got old enough to know better was to pretty much put him in a headlock. I let him pick the toothpaste flavor, the toothbrush, and the timing (before potty? after bath?) but he didn't get to decline it altogether and if he didn't like it, too bad. Not sure if that's solid parenting advice or what but ::shrugs:: whatever it takes.

We have one of the little finger ones and all of her teeth are at the front so it's working for now. I try for at least bedtime brushing. I'm not using any toothpaste for her right now and I can't remember when we started for DS 🤔

We just switched from the face washer over the teeth to a little toothbrush. We do it in the bath for now but I’ll need to change that now he’s having a bottle of cows milk before bed.
What worked for us with DS1 once we moved to toothpaste and brush was a teeth brushing Wiggles app. We used that from when he was about 18 months til he lost interest in it at 3.

We use the brush that goes on your finger. No toothpaste. I would just keep pushing, unfortunately I don't think there's any easy trick

On this subject, did anyone's Ped do a fluoride treatment at their 1 year visit? I know they didn't do this with E but they did with N. She was NAF.

What kind of treatment? I guess it was just a fluoride she rubbed on N's teeth? I probably should have asked questions but I was thrown and then she was just sticking her finger into N's mouth.

Thanks for all your input. I’ve tried the hold him down and brush method the past couple nights. He wasn’t too happy but I felt like I got his teeth actually clean. Lots of pursing his lips and spitting though. Hopefully he’ll chill soon and realize it’s not so bad.

We took the boys to a pediatric dentist in Feb I think and they brushed it on both boys’ teeth. They also told me we could start using fluoride toothpaste for B.

we were told to use the fluoride toothpaste right away. like a rice-sized amount. i confess that it’s not routine at this point. i need to do better. dd1 has about 6 toothbrushes and 3 different toothpastes to choose from and that seemed to help with getting things done. she got reasonable about brushing maybe 6 months ago?

clementine have you tried giving him a toothbrush go play with while you do his teeth? that helped sometimes with dd1. i think any amount of brushing is good at this point, even if it’s just 30 seconds. at least that’s what i tell myself. eta i see you’ve tried that sorry my reading comprehension is pretty horrible! i know it’s frustrating when it’s such a struggle. i think it’s just one of those things that is kind of a struggle until it’s not. i know that doesn’t help.

J has no teeth. My kids are late tethers. I don’t partake in oral car yet....well I did brush J’s mouth after ingesting a decent amount of blue paint.

We did a Florida treatment at 9months. We brush and ds loves it. With my girls though they hated it and we gave them a choice “easy way or the hard way”. It was happening either way.

Our Peds/Dentist are very "do the least" when it comes to dental, apparently. No toothpaste or anything until they can spit it out themselves (which is still not consistent at 3 for my oldest) and no dentist visits until 4/5. But no cavities so far (knocks on everything). And really, doing the least is where I excel.
