Starter Jackets. JNCO Jeans. Sketchers. Yesss. I’m still sad I never got my 1995 Chicago Bulls starter jacket. It’s all I wanted for Christmas! Omg. Why have we never bonded over this? I still have issues that we could never afford this.

I had my own horses starting in middle school.
😬 I'd get comments about how expensive they were from classmates, so I guess some of them thought I was a rich bitch.

Name brand food, kids who didn’t wear all hand me downs, kids who didn’t split meals at restaurants, and if your family ordered an appetizer and/or dessert, you were ballin’. Getting snacks at the movie theater. I still have a hard time paying those prices! 😆

My H grew up rich. He always says kids he thought were rich had 2 staircases. It is funny even if you grew up privileged AF you still have these weird ideas of what rich people are.

I still have and wear a Gap brand jean jacket that was my entire Christmas list when I was 14.
We were Ross or hand me down (or heaven forbid my gram got a wild hare and made us stuff).
Brand name or anything you could buy at a mall was coveted.

I thought adults who had waterbeds were rich.
Turns out they were just skeevy creepers.

I borrowed Willie Wan's backup starter jacket (Charlotte Hornets, natch) for a few weeks in 8th grade.
I wore it on slow walks to the convenience store, hoping that someone would call out to me and befriend me like the obviously cool urban kid I was.
My parents made me give the jacket back because they're haters.

I went out for drinks this week with an old friend who recently bought a house in our childhood city.
I blurted out "you have a house in the rich neighborhood!" and she immediately laughed and said "omg, I know, I keep saying that too. My husband doesn't know why I'm being so weird...but THIS IS WHERE THE RICH KIDS LIVED!"

Oh, I forgot a funny one. A cupboard that had real cups and glasses instead of a variety of Dannon yogurt containers to be used for cups. We also had these plastic Kool-Aid style cups with little handles. I think my mom got them for free by sending in labels. Actual Tupperware instead of an amalgamation of old cottage cheese and sour cream containers to hold leftovers? With masking tape labels?

Two working parents
Eta: or just two parents. Single mother meant we went without a lot.

Two working parents Eta: or just two parents. Single mother meant we went without a lot. I assumed one working parent in a two parent house was much richer. Like the mom could afford to stay home.

Vacations specifically to Hawaii or Europe.
Season tickets to football, baseball or hockey.
Living on a golf course.
If their dad had a car collecting hobby.
If their house had an intercom system. Eta: in my area you didn’t even have to have a pool, if you had a hot tub you were well off.

I thought adults who had waterbeds were rich. Turns out they were just skeevy creepers. I always wanted a water bed. My parents always told me I could have one because my bedroom was upstairs and it was too heavy to be on the second floor. When I met DH he had one, I thought he was super cool. He then laughed at me when I told him the lie my parents apparently told me.

I think I would be considered rich now by the standards of younger fungo. Which goes to show that I had no idea what actually made someone rich.

We had an intercom system and my friends used to make fun of me so hard. They’d yell at me at school through th halls, “wasabi bring your laundry down!”
I mean a weird thing to poke fun at someone for but, kids I guess.

This girl I went to grade school with had a dad who owned his own optometry practice. They had a stuffed grizzly bear in their den. To this day, I believe she is the richest person I have ever met because of that. One of my great uncles has a stuffed grizzly bear at his ranch and he is the richest person I’ve ever known, so this is probably legit.

I couldn't believe there were some kids who could go out to dinner with their parents and the kids (like teenagers) could order appetizer, dinner, dessert, whatever they wanted! Or, you ordering your own meals at some places as opposed to 'family style' - like the taco boxes from taco bell, a 20 piece nugget from McDonalds, getting a cheesesteak from a pizzeria instead of just a pizza everyone would eat. Oh yes, we were only allowed to order water. Of course that's what I order most of the time now. I was blown away by families that ordered beverages and appetizers. I thought they were just there on the menu but nobody actually ordered them.
