I wonder if AnnaKarenina is going to come back in here and talk more about stopping by a regatta on the way to inner-city work when we have clearly moved on to nostalgic childhood eating. I'm pretty sure Dawson's Creek is the only reason I even know what a regatta is. I now associate it with Rachel Greens fictional regatta gala.

I was the queen of book it. I got more personal pizzas than I could eat. My parents would take us to redeem our pizzas on school nights and they would sit at one table and let the kids sit at another table. I felt so sophisticated. I dominated Book It! Recently an acquaintance who is an elementary school teacher was talking shit about Book It and how it promotes unhealthy eating and doesn’t teach kids to love to read “just because”. I wanted to fight her. I am a voracious reader because of Book It. I am also a voracious eater of French fries, which are delicious. Why does she hate joy?

Taking my babysitting money to the mall, buying some Hang 10 tees at Contempo and Sun ripened raspberry body spray at bath & body works, then going to Chili’s for chicken fingers.
13 year old Bazi’s favorite way to spend a Saturday.

come off it, lady, whatever gets kids to read is good in my book. It's pizza, not heroin.

Just to circle back around to the original intent of the OP, I don't know if I saw it as the pinnacle of wealth, but it was a source of envy... people who had a second fridge in the garage that was just full of beverages. I always wanted one. I still want a second fridge... we just don't have the room. We have a second fridge. We are not rich and have a small house lol. Just saying. Where there's a will, there's a way! Of course, it came with the house and we just moved it to the basement.

In junior high, I took a cross-stitch class as an elective. I made a cross-stitch portrait of this boy I called Wheels. He was a dirty grunge kid who was in a wheelchair and for some reason, I had a massive crush on him. I worked for days to get his likeness just right. And then I gave the portrait to him one day after school. He still ignored me after that. The weirdest part is that I'm 99.9% sure he didn't actually go to my school...he just showed up sometimes in the hallways after school. This is like, the 7th weirdest thing you have ever said. 😂

Ground Round and Friendly's with my grandparents was where it was at. Sometimes though we would go to BK because they had to get their old people fish sandwiches. I love fast food fish sandwiches. You become more adorable to me by the day

And we used to have birthday parties at McDonald's and Pizza Hut. I have no nostalgia for a McD's birthday party but Pizza Hut is permanently stuck in my head as delicious. I eat it maybe twice a year (usually from the Target food area and I eat it while roaming) and then I feel like shit and swear it off. Then nostalgia creeps back in and I return to it. We found an old video of Mr. Ladybrienne and his twin sister's bday party at McDonalds circa 90's. He had a rat tail. I died.

Oh man, Book It was the best and one of the only times we got to eat out so I had no issues reading all the books! I don't recall having ever gone to a sit down restaurant with my family. Ever. If we ate out (seriously, like once a year) it was something like a Whopper (back then they were $1) and that was it. Then McDonald's came out with a family meal when I was a teen where you got 10 cheeseburger, 2 large fries in big ol' soda cupes, and 2 large sodas for $10. We were living it up on that. We actually got to eat fries! In HS I used to scrounge up change to buy a $1 Whopper at the mall when we'd go hang out and that was literally all the money I had. I would love when my grandparents visited from out of state which was very rare because then we got to go to Disney and eat at restaurants like Panderosa. They were obviously balling in my poor kid eyes.
ETA: My kid's friend thought we were rich because we had more than one TV. My kid thought her BF was rich because they have a two story house and it's bigger than our one story. She also believes everything will be handed to her because I guess I did it all wrong and kinda raised an asshole. No job, no money and she told me a few months ago that I need to help her look for a place when she graduates HS this year. She also told me last week that she thinks I'm giving her my car. I did it all wrong.

I always laugh about the stories I have that you all think are great, because I'm like "wasn't everyone an insecure 8th grader just wishing someone would kiss them" and by natural extension, why wouldn't you create cross-stitch projects to give to the dirty boys you'd think you might have a shot with? I so, so wish we could find him and ask what he thought when you handed him the portrait. I bet he still has it.

I just asked a friend about Wheels because I'm really wondering if I made all this up.
All she remembers is that he said he was in a wheelchair because he was hit by a bullet that ricocheted off the ground.
So Wheels is in fact real but I'm not really sure Wheels is a truth teller.

I'm already trying to think of ways to access class schedules from 1991-1993 and junior high year books to see if I can track down Wheels today. I'll do a "where are they now" episode for my podcast.

I wore a tight jean skirt to my cousin’s birthday party at McDonald’s around seven years old. Out on the playground, I was climbing the fence and fell. The post impaled the back of my skirt, and my little cousin ran off laughing and left me there dangling beside the Ronald McDonald statue.

We were sparkling water people and a Brita filter instead of water cooler and real soda.
