Thought I would create a new thread for this since we are all about to or starting to make a big transition, whether its weaning from breastfeeding or formula.
As a FF mom with a kid in daycare (so bottles full time), I'm wondering what others like me are planning? Are you going cold turkey and offering WCM in a cup at standard bottle times? WCM in a bottle to transition? Staggering the change from bottles over some period of time, and if so, then what?

I literally have no idea what I did 6 years ago with DS. I have virtually no memory of it. LOL.
Here's where I'm at with Lou: L is awesome with all cups (sippy and straw) but we have offered WCM a few times in them and you can tell she is meh on it vs water. Takes a few sips, loses interest. She definitely clamors for her bottles at bottle time, and gets HANGRY at the next meal time if we skip a bottle altogether. But shes off the charts big for her age so I'm not really concerned about her not getting enough nutrition if we do a sudden drop. Maybe we stop formula cold turkey, offer WCM in the nighttime bottle as a matter of sleep routine (for now), and then offer WCM in cups with a small snack during her other bottle times (wake up, mid morning, mid afternoon)?

I have no idea what we’re doing. I feel like this is the first thing in my short time as a mother that I haven’t obsessively asked about, planned, and figured out beforehand. But I seem to have no brain power or cares to do so. So we’re just sort of winging it. I tried asking daycare what they thought, but they were just like “just tell us what you want us to do”. Not helpful. The transition to one nap at daycare kind of forced a schedule change that sort of worked out with cutting out some bottle feedings though. He was getting 3 bottles at daycare and we first replaced the 4:00 one with a sippy of BM, then moved his 11:00 bottle to 9:30/10 to fit in better with the transition to one nap. Now we just moved the 1:30 bottle to a sippy of BM with lunch. So he’s getting water with breakfast, bottle mid morning, BM sippy at lunch, and BM sippy mid afternoon. Water with dinner, nurse morning and night.
No real rhyme or reason to the changes. Mostly just how can we slowly get rid of bottles and still make sure he’s getting enough fluids. I’m not really sure he is getting enough fluids though since he doesn’t drink a ton from the cup. Especially not at home. He will sometimes take 4 oz from the cup at daycare in one sitting, but at home it’s sip sip throw the cup on the floor.
Idk. I’m not very much help. I’m going to go eat some ice cream now.

Also. We tried half WCM/half BM at dinner last week and that night he was up screaming at midnight and got an ear infection 2 days later. H’s family doctor friend mentioned dairy allergies possibly being related to ear infections and now I am scared to try WCM again. We have a lot of BM frozen so we’re good for a bit, but I know we’ll need to try WCM again soon.

I have no clue what we're doing. E still nurses a lot. A LOT, a lot, including 2 or 3 times overnight. My work schedule is all over the place and includes overnights starting next weekend. So we're working on night weaning first. She will drink expressed milk from a straw cup when i'm gone but won't drink milk alternatives. I want to be done by 18 months but I said the same thing with DS but he didn't quit until he was 2.5 and I was pregnant and dried up 🤷♀️

Well my Dh gave ds a cup of whole milk the other night after dinner and he was fine. I’ll probably start offering a cup with meals in a few weeks. Currently he nurses about 4-6 times a day and I usually let the baby decide if it’s time to eat. My others were far more attached to nursing and we nurses to 22 months or so? I don’t think ds will do that. He is so distracted and bites me a lot.

We're formula feeding. I'll do what I did with my son, which was transition with homo milk in bottles for morning and bedtime. Instead of bottles after morning and afternoon naps I'll give a sippy of milk with a snack. Once she drops her morning nap we'll stop the mid-morning milk.
At some point we'll drop the early morning bottle and give sippy with breakfast, but I'll probably keep the bedtime bottle for a while.

Lord the biting. DS just suckles fir a second then starts biting and laughing. So yeah. My plans of just bedtime nursing are gone too.
He’s on pumped milk with a bit of wcm right now. He’s good with a straw Sippy so I’ll just start introducing that with plain milk. Bottles are a “bedtime” association at the moment so I’ll prob keep them with just wcm for a bit, maybe 6 months? DS1 was a mix of nursing and bottles of cows milk then nursing and cups of cows milk until 22 months.
I’m much more go with the flow with DS2. But the sudden self weaning thing has kind of got me in the feelings. I’ll probably never nurse another baby and since I didn’t get a “this is the last time” I’m feeling things.
I am ready to celebrate about not pumping at work anymore after next Tuesday though. But will prob still pump for a bit to have a stash for mixing for bed time bottles, since extended nursing isn’t happening.

she is still nursing a solid 6x a day. i nursed dd1 until 20 months and she refused wcm (the first time i gave it to her she went on a nursing strike for about 5 days, and then she would just let it dribble out of her mouth after that). i am going to probably just let nature take its course with dd2, but i feel like she is way more into it than dd1 ever was. my current pedi basically said there was no reason to try and do wcm if i didn’t want to if she is eating enough yogurt and cheese. i just know that when she starts daycare in the fall it’s goong to be a thing with them if she doesn’t drink milk but i guess i’ll worry about that then. i guess i’m no help.

It would be really unlikely IMO for a dairy allergy to present itself (especially at 1 yo) as an ear infection but no other signs.

It’s just kind of prime time of year for congestion and ear infections. We’ve found that a humidifier in her room has helped IMMENSELY with congestion.

DD2 has started to get straw cups of WCM at meals and then has a water cup out for her the rest of the time. She gets a bottle of BM
I want to stop pumping but my boobs are v v confused.
We need to work in dropping bottles but DD2 naps for shit anyways and I plan to nurse at night so that shouldn’t be too too hard.

I thought it would be an unlikely coincidence, but it freaked me out when he freaked out MOTN out of nowhere. We’ll try it again soon I’m sure.

My almost 11 month old bit me so hard last night it made me cry a lot. I am so over this. She shows no signs of slowing down and still wants to nurse all the time.

DD2 did this for about a week and then stopped. Hopefully it’s an equally quick phase for you. And you can stop if your want to - guilt free and without worry. It’s totally ok to be done even if she isn’t. It’s your body.

J was EBF and was the only one of my kids to never take a bottle. I started about 6w out and gradually dropped nursing sessions. 5 days after his first birthday I was down to nursing just before bed. I just stopped, he was pissed but after a few days he was ok. He took to WCM better than my girls. We use these and fill with milk. They are lightweight, small enough to hold and since he hated bottles he struggled with anything soft tipped.

I’ve been avoiding this thread but now I have a plan so I’m putting it out there. We are firmly in the don’t offer, don’t refuse now. He’s been pretty decent about not asking when he gets up from naps but at 4pm he’s desperate for boob.
And most importantly, I’ve decided to start weaning him off his middle of the night feed. I’m so nervous and kind of conflicted. But I feel like it’s starting to affect the rest of our lives now. Like I’m becoming a bitchy grump and he’s way too tired. So. Fingers crossed

Well we are done. I’ve finished pumping at work and now he’s having half breast milk half cows milk bottles at nap time and bed time. I may keep pumping in the evening so he can have a half half bottle at bed time but I’m feeling quite burnt out at the moment and pumping once the boys are in bed is just another chore before I can take a break so not sure. So conflicted. I’m in DS2’s room right now (it’s 6:30pm) and I just put my baby to bed for the last time before he’s one as it’s his birthday tomorrow. So many feelings. Especially since I’m fairly sure he’s my last baby.

DS2 is still nursing and I’m happy with how things are going. DS1 nursed till just past his second birthday, and by then I was so ready to be done. All things being equal, especially given that DS2 is nursing 6-8 times a day still, we’ll keep going for awhile.
I...am failing at offering sippy/straw cups though. I haven’t offered WCM at all yet, just water. And that only a few times. I need to get on that.

So we made the switch and she has been really good at passing on bottles. But the bad news is that she is crazy constipated with the WCM. We've eased up on it for now, offering one or two very small cups and seeing if that strikes a good balance. No other signs of intolerance or anything.
