can someone explain why they're being charged like I am 5?
are they funding it?
ETA: OH! As parents? this didn't cross my mind until just now. So they paid the creepy guy to get their kids into good schools?

I keep thinking how embarrassed I’d be if my parent did something like this.

can someone explain why they're being charged like I am 5? are they funding it? Paid for someone else to take the SAT/ACT for their kid. Then used those results to "apply" to these colleges. Getting them for mail fraud.

can someone explain why they're being charged like I am 5? are they funding it? Bribery. It's not just entrance tests but these people paid to have it appear as though their children were athletic recruits for certain schools, even if they were never affiliated with the sport.

Which then qualifies them for scholarships that could have gone to kids that might actually deserve them

I'm hoping that WFU tennis gets added to this list. Sean Hannity's kid is on the team.

I am confused on the logistics of the sport recruit piece. So they are recruited based on sports skills they don’t have. But then doesn’t the school have them play the sport? Or are you not required to play the sport as a condition of your acceptance? You can tell I am not an athlete.

Yeah this is really, really gross. I mean, as a parent, this isn’t even doing your kids a favor in the grand scheme of things. What a terrible lesson. Terrible people all around and I’m glad it is getting this kind of attention!

They would have gotten a slot. A slot is someone who would not have gotten into the school on their own academically but the coach is willing to help them out.

Or are you not required to play the sport as a condition of your acceptance? You can tell I am not an athlete. If the coaches are a part of it, they are the ones with the say of scholarships getting pulled from athletes. So somewhere they are hiding things from their assistants. There's a lot of fraud going on with that part.

You can tell I am not an athlete. yes and no. to an admissions office, they don't care about your actual ability. but if they know (think) that you're a high-level recruit that a coach is trying to get, they usually will give you a less stringent standard. a coach would presumably never know that John Doe Loughlin (whatever her kids name is) has gotten onto a high priority list based on lies. admissions would have never known that he wasn't a real recruit unless they talked directly wtih the coaches. i don't know if i'm explaining this well. it's basically taking advantage of a lack of communication between college coaches and admissions offices. I THINK.

There also could be guaranteed donations to the program from the rich parents for getting their kids into school.

or what other people said. but then a college coach would have to give up a scholarship? that seems... unlikely.

This is where I am. I feel that this is so much not news because I assumed this was always happening. Rich people buying their way into privilege? no, can't be.

No doubt about it that rich people get their kids into schools. I think this is news because of the cheating involved - ACT and SAT are being taken by other people. Bribes at so many levels within the colleges.

Daddy buys you a car, college, and a new job at a top company. I live in the land of overly rich, white, privileged people so maybe that skews my view.

oh shoot - $100,000???
i take back what I said re: the coaches not wanting to part with precious scholarships. i am reading the complaint linked in the UCLA article.
ETA: so it doesn't look like they even needed to be considered scholarship recipients, just designated on the specific admissions list as a recruited athlete. so in the UCLA example, parents give him $100K (!!!!) to put Preshus on his limited list of "recruited athletes", which have a lower standard of acceptance than your typical applicant for obvious reasons.

I think there’s a big difference between the rich that give donations to schools and the rich that are falsifying SAT scores.
