These canine teeth need to come in. J is great one day then a bear the next. The days he is hurting are rough. I can see both upper teeth but they arent through yet.
Dh bought j his own tablet. Oh my. He loves it and now snuggles on his chair with it. We still limit screen time but j wants it all the time.
I thiught my observation with my boss was tomorrow. She showed up at 10 today. Ooops. Thankfully my kids were great and i had my lesson planned. Whew.

They can come in any day now. D1 has a leapfrog tablet that she doesn't use all that much but when she wants to, M goes crazy and tries grabbing it the whole time. She is already crying and pointing to it in the closet, lol. We have pretty much hidden it since she was acting out of control. I guess we are starting early with this one. She is so much less chill than D1 ever was! ha

R’s canines aren’t popping yet, either - it’s been months.
We have a flash card app on the iPad that R just got into. She taps it too much and it skips to the next things before the sound plays for the picture a lot, which then pisses her off so she taps it more... I think the instruments are her favorite.

So we had the hearing screen today. All good, his hearing is totally normal, probably just sort of delayed bc of bilingual. But the audiologist said she noticed he’s very frustrated bc he can’t communicate well (he had a meltdown and hit me in the face while we were there🙈) so she said she would recommend speech therapy through early intervention to help him get there faster to communicate sooner.
I’m torn. I think at this age it’s normal to be frustrated by lack of communication skills and why should we put him in therapy for normal behavior. DH thinks why not help him get to talking faster if we can and it’s free. We’re going to email his dr and ask her thoughts, of course.
What would you guys do?

addymac working in special ed you can go thriugh the eval but he would have to qualify with a 25% delay at this age. I agree if he would qualify then I would do it, but if hes not very delayed then he wont qualify. Personally, j is frustrated also by the communication, but i would never seek early intervention for that reason, only if i suspected a delay. Maybe give it a few months before having him tested because once tested you have to wait 33 weeks ( i think..it might be 36 weeks) before you can be retested.

Hmmm personally I don't think I would be going the EI route yet just because of frustration. This seems pretty normal for an 18 month old. M is a bear and totally frustrated when she can't get something she wants but I just chalk this up to the age. I guess you could go for the eval and see if he even qualifies but for me I would probably wait it out a couple months and see what happens. I'm glad the hearing test came back fine!

addymac I would probably do it, if it was recommended -but, H is home all day so we’d have the time to have someone come to the house. Are you guys doing sign language? I find it really helps with communicating even if they don’t know how to sign what they actually want. “Help” has probably been the most used sign for both my kids. I really like this video for teaching simple signs: H doesn’t like the lady’s voice, but R picked up some signs on her own from the video. And, it helped reinforce some for me.

Thanks guys. I knew there was more to EI than just yeah sure why not, and I don’t think DH realizes that. Bc I don’t think N is delayed right now. And I don’t think the hearing people think either bc they heard him babbling and said they could understand some words in his babbles. I didn’t know that about having to wait x amount of time to get retested. Makes sense. I guess we will see.

We tried but failed at sign language. The only one he knows is more, which is very helpful with food, so thank goodness for that. I could try to push it more but I doubt we will be dedicated enough to it, sadly.

addymac I’m glad his hearing test was normal. It’s totally up to you whether or not you want to refer him to EI for an evaluation. My DS was evaluated at 18 months and was behind in every category except gross motor, so we did EI until 3 as well as some private speech therapy. He had like 2 words at 18 months. He’s 4 now and caught up in speech except for a lisp we’ll have to address when he’s a bit older. At home, I used some basic sign language and picture charts he could point to for basic everyday routine things. I don’t know your sons personality, but mine is very observant and just takes everything in. Once he decided to start talking more he picked it up pretty quick.

A still only has 8 teeth! Two in the bottom front and two molars in the back. And then the first 4 on top. I feel like I’ll be in teething hell for years.

addymac, that’s a tough decision. I feel like it’s totally normal growth and behavior for his age, so I’d probably wait until he was 2 to really make that decision. Just go with your gut.

addymac, I would also do the EI testing although maybe wait a few weeks based on what king26 said. I didn't know you had to wait such a long time between being tested. We may be in the same boat soon bc toddler H only has 6 or 7 words and we are not bilingual, so we'll see what they say at his appt Thursday. I have heard of so many bilingual kids taking a little longer, so what you described with N sounds normal to me, but why not just get the test for peace of mind?

J has three words I understand one is car he says it all day and is obsessed. I thought about testing but his doctor said she wasn't worried. I am just frustrated that I don't know what he wants most of the time and him being sick last week with H out of town made it worse.

D. isn't really talking yet either. She'll say die (that one), yes, mama, papa, nna (meaning cat hahaha, one of our cats is called Nina and she's made that the word for all cats it seems, cause when we point at one of the other cats and ask who's that she'll point and say Nna!) and has occasionally said some other words like boek but that's it. I was a little worried as well but during her 18mo check up earlier this month they weren't concerned at all. Just said we could try and stimulate her to say words more when for instance offering her a drink, to let her say milk or water rather then say itourselves. I've tried however that isn't working haha. It'll come in time??

Its interesting how we all don't have many talkers so far. M's appointment is next week so I'm curious what she will say. I mean at the 14 month, she was implying there was a delay and she had a few words then. It has picked up since then to probably about 12-15 maybe.

I just pulled out my infants and toddlers binder today to chwck milestones and it made me feel better. It shows what they look for between 13 and 24 months, then 25 to 30 months then 31 to 36 months. Happy to share if anyone wants to see. Its what we look for kids to have at those ages

Lots of kids have language expkosions between 18 months and 24 months. Im mobile so i cant see who said it but waiting until 3 or 4 to get tested is a long time if you suspect a delay. Waiting until 24 months isnt too long and its easier to qualify for the delay because theres a distinct 6 month delay difference there. Ill bet mist of our kids have a language explosion in the next few months but if you get to 24 months and are still worried please get the kids tested! ( just my professional opinion)

king26, can you please share those pages? I would love to know what's normal. Today the pediatrician was not at all concerned about toddler h's language, even though he only has about 9 words and no two word combinations. She did not even recommend a hearing test and seemed pleased his receptive language is good. He just learned "dog" yesterday, so I think I'll just wait.

Ill message them to you when I get to work. I think it was comforting because i checked off all the things J can do and it helped.me see what he should be doing in the next 6 months so i know what we need to work on

Hey king26 can you share them with the group? Or just send lots of PMs 😆 Ugh. Pretty sure N has a cold AND pink eye in both eyes. He’s a disaster. Clingy mess. So fussy. Everything makes him cry and I have to carry him nonstop. I was supposed to go back to work today and he wouldn’t let DH console him at all last night so I was dreading work and then 🙌🏼 I got a call asking if I wanted to be cancelled. Fuck yes. Oof. We called the dr line last night and they never called us back 😒 so I made dh call again this morning. It being the weekend sucks. We will see what they say. Thanks for everyone’s comment re: EI thoughts. Our dr put in the referral so I guess we will see what the evaluation shows. Does anyone else’s kid hit them repeatedly in the face when they get frustrated and are upset and can’t communicate why? It’s so bad these last few days and I’m hoping it’s just bc he is sick / feeling extra crummy and not his new normal. My face is tired of being slapped. And he sobbed during timeout the other day. Broke my heart.
