Where are we?
We’re home after gymnastics today! I’m off work for a week but will probably go in on Tuesday to make next sessions booklets for instructors. DH leaves Monday evening so just enjoying our last few hours with him!!

I went to the gym for the first time today on a free trial. I really enjoyed it and would definitely like to get a membership. Fingers crossed they need some volunteers so I can get one for free because I really can't justify the cost right now.

So B is back to normal but now J is sick. I’m not shocked.
Tomorrow we are supposed to get a crazy wind storm. They said gusts could get up to 60mph! Luckily we don’t have any trees on our lot and or swing set is already knocked over from our last wind storm so we should be good.

So also... I had a dentist appointment yesterday. Apparently I have some bone loss in my jaw by my back teeth. I'm pretty upset. I brush, floss, mouthwash, all the stuff you're supposed to do. And still end up with a crazy issue like this. The goal now os to try to prevent any further damage (I need to go in every 3 months for a cleaning) because if it progresses it will be really bad (like needing bone grafts and other crazy expensive things).

OK I'm confused... how does cleaning prevent bone loss in your jaw? Is this a form of osteoporosis? Since I need xanax just to go for my cleaning every 6 months and fillings, I can't imagine getting a cleaning every 3! I'm sorry danib!

Looking back at the week, it looks like we had another mini-word explosion. L is repeating Okay, but saying "I know!" (I don't think he does know LOL) he's saying no for NO and no for snow so we have to listen in context. Today he started saying Ham (because that's his favorite lunch meat)
Edit out his name

More cleanings to try to prevent bacteria from getting in under the gumline and into the bone which would cause more breakdown. Basically right now with the current loss there is a gap (it's only millimeters so nothing I can see or feel), so until my gums like tighten up around the tooth there it's going to be super easy for bacteria/plaque to get under. Edit: I'm not sure if it's osteo. In my research it looks like it can be osteo or gum disease. I'm at an increased risk for both of those things, AND one of the side effects my Sjogrens Syndrome is tooth decay and loss so I'm all sorts of shagged in that regard.

danib, I'm sorry. But I'm glad they caught it now so some preventative measures can take place. Hugs with a cleaning every 3 months though. So I was on the GD board and saw a thread about ASD and a speech delayed kid. They mentioned echolalia which is a red flag for ASD (among other things) and I'm wondering if anyone knows more? A few of L's phrases may be from Thomas or other TV shows like "I did it!" and "I know" He doesn't always use them properly, like it seems he says "I did it!" even when he didn't do but DH or I did it. I'm probably siting here working myself up for nothing with my scotch on the rocks but also reading, it's not always an obvious symptom. Plus his obsession with Trains!?! Someone talk me off the edge.

We had a busy day today. C had soccer then we went out to lunch with BIL, SIL and the kids. Then we went to a hobby train show. C had a ton of fun. By the time we came home, it was way past normal nap time but he couldn't even keep his eyes open so we let him nap and stay up late. Tomorrow we'll probably be staying home all day because of the crazy weather we're getting. FX we don't lose power!

Cheshie6 C learned a lot of phrases from Mickey and other shows and doesn't always use them in the correct context. One of the first things he would consistently say is "oh no!" which we didn't realize they say a lot on TV. He is getting much better about using phrases in the correct way but he still is FAR from perfect. Right now he uses "wait" when he means come back or don't leave. I don't know much about echololia but I've seen the way my cousin who has severe autism is and the way she repeats things is much different then how C is. It's hard to explain but from what you're describing, it sounds like L is more like C and still just trying to figure out this crazy English language.

Cheshie6 I'm not familiar with echocololia but the train obsession and repeating phrases (even when they don't make sense) sounds pretty "normal" to me. Obviously keep an eye to stuff if you have concerns, but I definitely wouldn't jump to any conclusions (I mean, I might do it in my head because that's what stress/anxiety does, but I'd remind myself to stop doing it)

Cheshie6 I’m not going to lie I started worrying after reading that thread too. On Friday we got another incident report for O hitting another kid. That’s like his 3rd one in a week and a half. So I was asking the teacher does she think he’s more aggressive than the other kids or it normal 2 yo behavior. Then she told me she thinks he hits bc he doesn’t talk as much as the other kids. That blew my mind. I thought his speech was normal so I started analyzing every little thing. It’s hard not to spiral. I’m just going to bring my behavioral/speech concerns up to his ped at his next wellness visit. danib sorry about the dentist. I hate the dentist. H has to go every 3 mo for the same issue. Sucks. He has bad gums and I have bad teeth. Our kids are screwed.

@cooksiwthwine that's a big concern of mine. DH has weak enamel and receeding gums. C already had 12 teeth capped plus 4with fillings plus 3 root canals. We're not big on sweets, we don't drink soda and very little juice, we all brush/floss/mouthwash...

I also read the ASD thread on GD. I have a lot of conflicting feelings about it. Some areas are so gray - sometimes things that are "normal" are red flags, but other times they are not. like, I can specifically remember my nieces at this age being totally obsessed with princesses (they are not on the spectrum). But sometimes obsessions with things can be red flags, so sometimes its normal but sometimes its not. Children at this age also learn words by repeating them back to you. But repeating words and phrases are a red flag. its so hard to know and understand what is normal and not that it's frustrating to me. B loves trains, and he's really into ceiling fans right now. But he's also a really loveable kid. But he's also really shy. But he also loves to play with other kids. But it takes him a bit to break out of his shell. So I don't know if I should be concerned at all. Some days I'm ok with it but then some days I find myself questioning everything.

Cheshie6 my kids repeat stuff all the time, especially when they are excited. They will tell me they did something 8,000 times in a row. And J will tell me how he peed on the potty when he didn't. Kids also get REAL into shit. W went thru a helicopter period where he could tell you everything about them. He was like 2.5. So, I mean it could be something. But it could also just be normal kid stuff. I think you have to judge the repetition and train lust in context with everything else. It sounds like he is making good progress in his speech, don't forget that. If you need some reassurance, talk to your Ped and your speech therapist and see what they think.

Did I ever tell you guys about when C went through his dragon phase? I'm sure it was a solid year, he pretended to be a dragon. Like literally. We would ask him to do something "no dragons don't like that" or he would say he wanted to do something and be like "dragons can do it". He made up a dragon name. Sometimes he would "pretend to be C" but most time wanted to be called by gis dragon name. Sometimes we would be like "too bad C isn't here or we'd bring him to do Xyz" and he'd be like "ohh I'll go get him" and run to anothrt room then come back like "ohh hi mom I missed you". Then when the thing was done he'd be like "ok I'm going to dragon land to visit Cinder and go to another room and come back out as the dragon again..
Kids are bizarre.

Cheshie6 echolalia is normal at this age. If it persists into preschool age it’s a red flag. And also, it’s not just copying in general, it’s copying a question or using a question to make a statement, ie: saying “are you hungry?” After mom asks “are you hungry”, or when they use it in their own in order to tell mom they are hungry. “Mom, are you hungry”, meaning, I am hungry. Copying generic phrases seems fine at this stage to me. But also, add me to the list to spiraling after reading that thread. I am now convinced O has issues with pragmatics, or social communication. His language is completely normal, but how he uses it seems socially behind. He doesn’t greet people, or tell me stories, or make friends easily. So it could be a problem on its own or a part of ASD. As I said, I have spiraled. He was discharged from his behavior specialist because there were no issues anymore but I might reach out to her to see if she noticed anything in her observations. Raising little people is the most challenging and stressful thing ever.

Just relaxing now at nap time. Finished reading 1 Stage 1 book with O that took 25 minutes. It’s not getting easier yet, but he doesn’t ask to stop, so I keep going at this excruciatingly slow pace. Hopefully going to he Science center later. And Cheshie6, you’ll appreciate that MH is making pernil right now. It’s his first go at it, so he was FaceTimeing his mom for how to do it.

hangry, sometimes I feel like we have too much information and it easy to spiral and then you land somewhere that I’m not sure is safe... like the Nemecheck protocol which swears it can cure ASD and other developmental delays with fish oil, inulin, and EVOO! I don’t think it’s unsafe per se but it makes promises that won’t fit everyone. But in some speech delayed groups, some swear by it!

Speaking of obsessions, E is obsessed with anything fire truck related. I’ve been describing it to people like he doesn’t have an imaginary friend, he has his imaginary ‘job’. He constantly talks about ‘his fire department’, or how he has to go to work, the calls he goes on, or what he has at his fire department. I was cutting up strawberries this morning and handed him the bowl and he looks at me and says, “oh, I have strawberries at my fire station”. He says this maybe 100 times a day, about anything really, “oh mom, look at those trees, I have those at my fire station”. At pickup I ask him if he had fun at school and he corrects me that he went to work, or that he wasn’t at school, he was at his fire station. We were with my siblings last week and one of them asked if he was excited to go to big boy school this fall, he told them that he can’t go to school, that he has to go to work and how he’s a fire fighter. He will even ask us to call him Firefighter Everett and not not E.
Totally agree that kids are weird!

Cheshie6 M wakes up talking about dinosaurs and goes to sleep at night asking about them. The amount of time that word is used throughout the day can’t be counted. I assume this might be normal or else Disney wouldn’t have come up with preschool age show about them. Trains for L are his “thing” right now and I completely understand why. He sees them on TV and then can go to his own in the house and pick them up, move them, play the wheels, etc etc. They really are fascinating. As for the repetition, it’s normal for this particular age and developmental phase. It’s how we learn, toddlers just don’t know to repeat stuff in their head like adults too. And if he’s going through an increase in words he might just be enjoying be able to say whatever it is or maybe he likes/is interested in how it makes his tongue and mouth move. If it’s something that also gets attention from you then heck yes he’s going to say it over and over. The “I” versus mom, dad, you, etc is also a thing for this age. First, second, and third person are very abstract and hard to understand. Toddlers are also self consumed. They’re at a stage where their brains honestly believe that the world revolves around them and anything going against that is extremely foreign. It’s why tantrums are a normal and expected thing right now. I bet he does know that you did he, he just doesn’t care and doesn’t see the importance of changing the label to Mommy did it. This first begins to change when they give demands. “Mommy sit” as an example, because they are wanting you to do something they want. I checked for that thread quick before responding here and quickly noped out of it. “Normal” right now is one big massive gray area. As weeks and months progress that gray area shortens and shortens and it’s more obvious that something might not be neurotypical. I can’t read stuff like that because it gets me worried. M is ahead in some areas and behind in others like she has been since day one and the more I read the more I worried that maybe a certain thing she does here isn’t ok and another thing there should be checked on so I just stopped myself.
