I've already been planning N's birthday! My mom made a carousel cake with animal crackers for my brother's first birthday, and I've wanted to do the same for N. I found this recipe: www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/frosted-animal-cracker-carousel-cake-5238246And I'm going to give it a shot, even though it looks like a lot of work. We'll probably be living in a new city by April, so it'll probably just be my parents who fly out for her birthday. I'm not sure yet what I'll make for food and drinks.

We are having his first birthday at home, it will be warm still most likely. Probably having a casual brunch party I think. Depends how his nap schedule changes closer to I guess!
For DS1 we were living in a smaller house so we split the party and had our friends and their kids for brunch then family for afternoon tea. It was the best solution we could come to but it was a huge day. H’s extended family is big and they all expect to come. We decided we would invite them for the first birthday, then subsequent birthdays just our immediate families (still 20 people total). This makes my MIL a bit... funny... because our immediate families is mostly my family since I have siblings, step siblings and step parents whereas H just had a sister and his mum. She feels like she should get to have “extra family” as guests or something.
I think I’ll do a special cake for DS and get a nice sheet cake to feed the masses, much less work!
I’m thinking croissants, a breakfast casserole, fruit, cupcakes, mimosas, so far

I’ve already been forced to think about this, it’s going to be a cluster. Her birthday is the day after Easter, and the weekend after is my cousins wedding. We usually throw two separate parties one for the in laws and one for my side because our house is to tiny to fit everyone at once. I’m going to have to start the parties rolling April 1st to fit everything in.
Since her birthday is the day after Easter I’m thinking “Somebunny is One” will be the theme.

We’re doing a lumberjack theme - lots of buffalo plaid and mini Christmas trees with pinecones. I think we’ll do a chili bar, but I’m trying to think of something to go with it. Cornbread muffins, pigs in a blanket, or ham and cheese sliders maybe. Anyone have any recommendations for something that goes with chili?
I’m trying to decide if we should have it at our house or at my parents 3 hours away. We don’t have any family in the area, so if we have it here both our parents would come down, but otherwise it would just be friends and friends’ kids that we invite. If we have it at my parents, my aunts/uncles, cousins, grandparents can come, plus it would be a little closer for H’s family to drive. But then we have to haul all the party stuff up there and back. H suggested having 2 parties, but I’m not sure I want to do that.
I need to figure this out and get invitations out soon! Only 6 weeks until L is 1! And I need to get to hobby lobby and find some decor.

clementine, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? I think we're going to do unicorns. I actually am loving the idea of a brunch so I may steal that idea nevertoomanyshoes. I don't know if it'll work with naps though, N is pretty sleepy in the morning usually where as after dinner she is super happy so..maybe dinner will be better. Ugh. I'm also torn about who to invite. With E we just did family but including our aunts/uncles so it was pretty big, but we didn't have many friends with kids locally at that point so we didn't invite friends. Now, I'd rather just do friends vs. extended family but I feel like we can't since we did it that way for E. And none of our friends have birthday parties for their kids so I feel bad continually inviting them to ours. I already had E's party planned at this point so I'm definitely slacking.

We did a brunch for my oldest on her first birthday. It was breakfast at Tiffany’s themed, And we wore black and pearls. It was so fun. Everyone loved the food.

Our house is too small and we probably won't do anything. It makes me sad. I messed up planning her baptism too so she still hasn't met extended family or had any kind of celebration. Ugh.

mintyblueair that cake is awesome you will have to aw if you make it! calendula i totally feel you in the too small of a house thing. i’m really stressing. up until now we’ve done parties at my grandmas place in her party room but she doesn’t live there anymore so i have no idea what we’ll do. we’re going to be out of town with my mom and aunt for her actual birthday and then she has surgery right when we get back so i have no idea what we’ll do. i’d like to make a fun cake. that’s about all i’ve got so far.

I’m having the hardest time picking a theme, I think mostly because he’s too little to tell me what he likes😂
Currently deciding between “Camp Owen” (camping theme) or Little Blue Truck theme. I’m definitely agonizing over this more than I should🙈

I’m definitely agonizing over this more than I should🙈 Those are both cute themes! For my son, I chose a lion theme because his lovey is a lion and it was the only thing I could say he loved. N's lovey is a goat, but I don't really want to do a goat cake lol.

My DS got a "Where the Wild Things are" theme because he was such a wild baby. LOL.
But it was cute. Invitations said "Let the wild rumpus start", I bought paper goods on Etsy that matched the book illustrations and I made him a yellow felt crown that looked like the one in the book. He wore it while eating his cake.

I chose L’s theme because of an outfit. He has this adorable buffalo plaid outfit with a deer face on it that I thought he’d wear for Christmas, but he’s such a little guy that it doesn’t fit yet. I’m hoping it fits by his birthday!

ArielMermaid, I may steal your "some bunny is turning 1" idea. When N was born it was right near Easter and we did pictures of her in a bunny outfit for the newborn pictures. I think it'd be cute on the invite to do that picture plus a shot of her now in it. But Easter is also super later this year so it's not actually close to her birthday so I'm still undecided.

There is a lot of great stuff on Pinterest for it! Of course I was telling MH about it yesterday and he was like, “ok that’s cute, but why wouldn’t we do a bird theme?” Her nickname is Birdie. So now I’m second guessing it because that’s a really good idea. Damn smart H. I don’t know why I didn’t come up with that.

I haven't thought about it too much yet but I think our theme will be bumblebees and honey- E's first "bee-day." It'll probably be super small and informal. I really like the idea of brunch but I don't know if I could get my shit together early enough.

We’re definitely doing a brunch. It’s so much easier with everyone’s schedules. I’ll set up a mimosa and Bloody Mary bar for the adults, make a bunch of quiches, bacon or sausage, maybe some waffle sticks, and big fruit platter. We’ll turn on a movie and put out toys and a craft for the kids. Now I just have to pick a theme 🤔

L’s room sort of took on a bee theme based on the Burt’s Bees bee sheets I randomly bought.

I love the some bunny is one theme! J was born th me day after Easter. I honestly haven’t given it much thought yet. I think I’m in denial that he’s almost one. As for guests, I know my parents will be coming in town for his birthday. I will probably invite some close friends and that will be it. We went with a Minnie Mouse theme for DD.

I’m doing a joint party for the boys. L will be 5. We actually just picked a theme this week - pirates.
I’m irrationally excited. I feel like last years birthday for L was kind of an afterthought with a newborn and such. But this year I’m not even going to rein myself in. We’re going big. I love party planning

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. We did a big party for DS1 because we went back to our hometown for his first birthday and our families both live there. But this time it’s just us and my sister/nephews. We don’t really know anyone else here with babies so it feels weird to just invite adults to my kid’s first birthday party.
But because I feel guilty for not doing anything, we probably will do something small and a cake because there should always be a cake.
I did just plan his one year photos so I’m feeling pretty proud of myself there!

Oh geez. I need to figure this out too. Our house is bad for entertaining - it’s a 4- level split so every area is pretty small and separate for another. Which is good for some things but not parties. Thinking of renting a small room in a restaurant here maybe? Or drive to the city and have family meet us there (we’re at least 3 hrs from most family) maybe separate family/friend events? Ugh. The pondering. I asked G what party he wanted to have for A and he said Dinosaurs. 😂 I’m kinda leaning towards Mickey/Minnie Mouse or like an art/colour party. leatherpants can I just host my party with you? #birthdaytwins

We are moving 4 days before his birthday, so his party will be 3 weeks late. I had big themes and photo shoots for the girls, but I haven’t even thought about it.

After our two week trip I'm finally ready to think about March lol. I'm excited but also HOW? I made a "baby book" for him, just designed pages on the computer, printed, filled pages out and put in scrapbook album. Anyway I found some woodland animal images that I used as the theme of the book app I'm thinking I'll do that for his party, maybe especially foxes. But it'll be a small party, we only have a bit of family here in NY and idk if they'll even all fit in our house.
Y'all with your huge parties, do you spend this much $$ effort for every birthday for every child every year? I did not grow up with birthday parties like y'all are talking about, but also it's pry partly because of culture, when you have large families you can't do 6 big parties a year...
Era to be clear, I'm not judging at all, it sounds like fun. It's just like nobody on our family or friends circle would eeeever rent a space for a birthday party. Maybe for a 40th or something but again culture probably.

alwayscheese we do a big first birthday and small birthdays after that. We'll honestly spend between $200-300 but we serve booze and a full meal to about 30 adults. I love throwing Pinterest parties though so I 100% recognize that this is like 60% for me and 40% for DD2. In contrast we spent well under $100 for a pizza party for DD1 last year at her little inhome daycare.

Leaf 🌱 Oya that makes sense if you're just going big for number 1. And yes I'm the same as you that I love to put on a party and I'd say it's pry 80% for me 😂

We decided to have 2 parties - one at my parents for family and one at our house for friends. Double the fun, double the $$. But at least I’ll get my money’s worth for the decorations!
H wants to repaint our living room and kitchen (which would involve sanding the texture out of the walls, priming, then painting) all before the party which is in a month. And he will be out of town for work 2 weeks in February. I love party planning but DNW to do so in a messy, dusty house that may or may not be done by the party.
