Hot damn. What a way to start the day.
To quote my good friend Senator Harris “democracy works”. She talked about how beautiful the design of our government is with the legs of the table and how it was designed to still stand even if the executive leg fell apart.

Oh and I know you will all be surprised but we’ve heard zero from MAGA folks or T himself about the cop who was killed this week in CA. What’s the difference with the cop that was killed weeks ago that T is talking about all the time? The one this week was ambushed by a middle aged white Republican who was paranoid of police, had two unregistered guns, and was previously ordered to turn over an AR15 after an assault conviction.

How does this effect veterans in the long run if it goes through? It allows them to access more private healthcare services using their benefits. However, it doesn’t increase funding, so it will siphon money away from the VA. It will likely hurt access to specialties that the VA does best that veterans are more likely to need. I’m going to have to ask my brother about this. He’s interning at a VA hospital as a counselor while he gets his MSW, so I’m guessing he has a lot of thoughts on it. I know that accessing healthcare can be difficult for vets, especially if they live far away from a VA hospital. But obviously, without additional funding, this is going to hurt more than it helps anyone. Yes, the VA is such a unique place because they are focused on what Veterans need. They do those services exceptionally well and often are the only places those happen. Veterans can be seen at non VA providers (red tape and sometime difficult, which is a problem) and there is a mechanism for payment to the non-VA providers based on Medicare rates. It’s fair and efficient. The hospital I work at is actually really close to a VA facility and we coordinate care. They go to the VA for most of their care and come to us for what the VA can’t provide, mostly cancer treatments.

Shutdown/trash question - it's awful that due to the shutdown the trash is overflowing in DC (and elsewhere). But also, people are gross - not that the responsibility should be on other local business owners, but if you see an overflowing trash can, why not hold your trash for an extra 100 steps into a nearby open place of business to dispose of it vs adding it to the heap beside the trashcans?
I'm open to a legit reason besides "people suck".

Fuck them. Trump advisor says furloughed workers are better off because they don’t have to use vacation days. This makes me so fucking mad. People are scrambling to pay their bills and can’t afford food since they have to hold onto their cash, since who the hell knows when the shutdown will end. And they compare it to a vacation? 😡😡😡 I know several people who are essential workers for TSA and CG. Their situation is especially awful right now. It’s making me so mad and sad.

We have a friend that is an air traffic controller. He is having to work overtime. They are a single income family and with no paycheck and woof it is rough. I feel like you don’t want to piss people off in charge of such safety sensitive things.

dc2london my gosh that gave me chills. This shutdown has to stop. My FIL was trying to be all well it’s really the fault of both sides and there are security issues at the border last night and I was all like HELL NO. He’s not even a DT fan. Olds, man. I had this same conversation with an aquaintance the other day. She’s, like, 30. But she also said there wasn’t enough research to convince her that climate change is real, so...

My brother (a Bernie supporter) voted for Jill Stein. I was like “ What. The. Motherfuck?” I still yell at him about that when I see him.

This is typically done by tracing the route and where in the trash it is.

I like wine and I like Pringles. I even like drinking wine while eating Pringles. But this combo is too far for me.

I'm really confused about this. I understood bubblehape as asking why a random person walking down the street would throw their trash on the ground next to an overflowing trash can vs. taking home or into a nearby open business to toss it. How is that illegal and how on earth would you track a random person's Starbucks cup from Targets garbage cans*(as an example).

When I read her post, it sounded more like businesses had overflowing trashes that she was asking about throwing in a different one. On my side, Businesses throw out things. If their trash flags one of the dump’s monitors for whatever they are looking for, it gets tracked back down to where it came from. I was more looking at it from a regulatory standpoint on the business, not on individuals

I threw up in my mouth a little.
