It hit me, the presidential election is next year. In 2016, 2020 seemed so far away. And we will live 1000 lifetimes between now and then. This presidency is fucking exhausting.

Yes Hill staffers are still working (some, anyway)

I was annoyed because some state congressmen are asking for emergency funds to keep the national parks here open.
I think the parks should stay closed during a shutdown. It doesn't seem like a real critical agency to me.

Among the many toddler-esque reasons T is digging in his heels on the shutdown, I feel like he's deliberately aiming to stretch this out just so he can say Democrats are responsible for the longest government shutdown in our history.
He's such an ass.

It's covered here a fair amount because it's pretty hard on the local tourism industry for parks like Yosemite. It's especially hard right now since they were shut down during a prime week this summer because of smoke and then another prime time over the holiday vacation.

This article from Washington Post makes it seem like it was a Trump admin decision to keep the parks open - so maybe the congressmen are asking for emergency funds to add staff? www.washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2019/01/04/three-dead-national-parks-shutdown-wears/

Personally I'm more worried about kids not getting food than waiting for my tax refund but yeah that will probably be the boiling point bc that's what the media will cover Me too. But people are selfish. Yup. Someone told me last night that they typically shrug off shut downs but now that HE is PERSONALLY affected by a delayed tax return he's pissed. I'm heartbroken for people who stand to lose their homes, their cars, their savings, over Trump's posturing. My return can wait. We don't need the money for anything pressing. I'd rather see people get their lives given back to them.

It looks like the request in UT was because of lack of funding for search and rescue teams and public safety needs (like plowing). They are keeping the parks open but with minimal assistance. The state is covering the costs of that assistance. I still don't love it but it does make sense from a tourism standpoint.

My thoughts and prayers to anyone who deal with the public and tax forms. I know there are probably tons of people asking for their 2018 tax form already at my library.

I think I read that 3 people have died in parks due to understaffing The last I read, it was up to 7 people after this weekend. It sounds like the parks that increased fees last year will be using those fees to cover this shutdown instead of being able to use them for all of their deferred maintenance. And then they will have to dip into the general NPS funds for those costs, which will limit funding for some of the other NPs. ☹️

So there are no votes today meaning the shutdown will go through tomorrow, day 18. After tomorrow this will be the second longest shutdown. By Saturday this will tie the longest shutdown which occurred in the 90s with Clinton.
He doesn’t even need to go to the SOTU to be the longest shutdown.

Damn, Sandra Oh looked stunning at the Globes last night. I'm so bummed I missed it. At one point she got serious and talked about how important it was for her to cohost and how she felt the moment of change and it was beautiful. The rest of the show was meh for me, but that was a highlight. There were some missed opportunities and some cringeworthy moments that were turn offs for me. Like the white guy who directed Greenbook could have stepped aside and let Octavia accept the award.

This is good news. I don’t understand why she has to spend a day more in jail, but 8 more months is better than a life sentence.

But people are selfish. I will say I read that a lot of the early filers are people who get refunds and depend on the refunds to get by. So while you (blanket you) and I can wait for a refund, there's a lot that need the refund. I was just telling my husband that the IRS being on shutdown with bare minimal staff is not good going into tax year, especially one with a million changes thanks to the Rs
