Our โbaby friendlyโ hospital took both my kids out of the room for me. With DS it was imperative since I still was restricted to bed, catheter and all, until 35 hours after he was born. I couldnโt go to him if he cried or do anything without a nurse (and MH was fucking useless of course) so rooming in really wasnโt an option.
With DD I felt amazing within an hour of her birth and completely able to get up and down myself, pick her up, nurse and rock her, even though they kept making me lay down because my BP wouldnโt go down. She stayed with us almost the whole time but at one point I did ask the nurse to take her because she wouldnโt settle and I needed to sleep badly (and H was, again, useless ๐).
I have no idea what will happen this time because Iโm delivering at the big city hospital. I know their website says theyโre baby-friendly but idk if that means they have no nursery or what. But even if they donโt, the nurses can roll the baby around the halls for you for a couple hours if you ask. I may also mention to MH this time that even if heโs tired, heโs nowhere near as tired as I am or will be so he should suck it up and let me sleep. That certainly would help.

This is so interesting. I guess with DS1 they did have a nursery bc they asked if they wanted to keep him there at night but I was like no effing way. I really donโt know about the hospital I delivered DS2 and this one, but I donโt think they do? Iโm thankful I felt great after DS2 and MH is generally helpful. I donโt think thereโs anything wrong with it and Iโm all about taking full advantage of the hospital help, but I just didnโt want them out of my sight. maybe I will feel differently this time ๐

. This is where I'm at this time. Like, I very well may take them up on the offer of carting her around, especially if I have her during the work week (DS2 arrived on a weekend so I had help from my parents and H was off on leave when DS1 showed up). The idea of being completely kid free before the crazy of having 3 really sets in is sounding better and better.

Rest is SO needed!

notagoddess I believe not lifting for 6 weeks is recommended. That is one of the few things I followed because if not I really regretted it. DS was 2.5 when I had DD1. I used to lifting him a lot. I made sure he could climb in his carseat prior to delivery and worked on getting him use not being lifted so much. I compromised with holding his hand a lot and letting him sit in my lap/beside me. I think started lifting him some around 4weeks PP. I was driving by 1w post both times.

@amc woohoo! We are pretty much ready here too! We donโt live near our families so my SIL threw us a virtual baby shower so Iโm waiting to see if we might get a few more gifts before I take the plunge on the completion discount!

Today is going to last forever. I'm so tired, it's taking forever to get ready for work! But in good news, neither kid tried to come sleep in my bed last night lol They must have been extra tired after DS2's birthday dinner activities.

I asked MH to get up to help me load the boys into the car this morning since i was running late and it was sooo nice not having to do that twice this morning.

My DDs have been so challenging lately and I am feeling really anxious about how they will be when baby gets here. I know it will all work out, but I really hope they go easy on me.

Same with my boys! I just need them to bring it down a level or two. And if DS1 could lose the teenager "Why do I have to do it if [fill in the blank]..." attitude, that'd be great.

I feel like Iโve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden itโs all coming back to me ๐ฌ. Dude. Same. It didn't take much to figure out breastfeeding with DS1 but I really struggled with my supply. With DS2, I didn't have supply issues until I went back to work but breastfeeding was 100x more painful to the point of crying the first couple weeks (though people didn't guess it because he gained weight just fine). We didn't know until like, 6 months ago that the kid has a lip tie >.< Can't imagine that helped our journey.

I feel like Iโve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden itโs all coming back to me ๐ฌ. Brought to you by my night. LO did some great nursing earlier but it is WORK to get him to do it. He just doesnโt want to open up his mouth wide enough to get a proper latch. He definitely would prefer to sleep. Fortunately he already has had a wet diaper and a poop diaper so I donโt feel too bad letting him take a break but man. I hope we can do better tomorrow.

I feel like Iโve blocked out how terrible nursing a newborn is, and all of a sudden itโs all coming back to me ๐ฌ. I nursed DS from 6 pm until 10 pm last night, I was so upset, it felt like he was never going to be full. He gave me 5 hours of sleep as a thank you, I only had to nurse him for 10 minutes after a three hour stretch. ๐๐๐ I feel like I got 12 hours of sleep. Thanks little guy. ๐

I have also been worrying about the early nursing days. My nips were cracked and bleeding with DD around the time my milk came in and it was painful for weeks. Thankfully, the TT revision really helped the pain and until that nipple shields were my BFFs. Also, for those of you who donโt know, you can request your OB to write you a script for Dr. Jack Newmanโs APNO (all purpose nipple ointment), it really helped when nursing DD in those first couple months and I know other mamas who swear by jt as well!

cch That nipple ointment saved me! DS was latched (poorly) for about an hour after he was born, and it took a bit to figure out how to get him latched better. My nipples were cracked and bleeding by the next day. An absolute angel of a nurse swooped in and saw what was happening, ordered the APNO, and I was already on my way to healing by discharge. Iโm planning to request it up-front this time.

Nursing DS1 was super painful. I got conflicting diagnoses on a tongue tie, but ended up lasering it bc I was in so much pain. It got much better after the revision but I still donโt truly know if it was just that his mouth was getting stronger and we were getting the hang of it. With DS2 it was pretty much the same experience except we did not revise any tongue tie. Still lots of blood and pain. I basically had to scream into a pillow every time he latched on. after the two week mark it got significantly better. I applied nipple cream and expressed breast milk on my nips after every feed and was vigilant about a wide open mouth latch. My eyes would pop out of my head if I was able to nurse this babe without blood and tears, so Iโm fully expecting it to suck for the first two weeks, but I just hope itโs not any worse. DS2 pAssed his birthweight by his 2 day check up at least so I didnโt have to stress about that. Feeding babies is hard!

I mentioned I wanted some to my OB at my last appointment and she called it in that day. I was only 32-33 weeks at the time and didnโt want her to call it in until a week or two before my DD but I guess I didnโt mention that so itโs already been filled. Picked it up Monday and it was $50 for 15g. Kinda bummed it was filled so early since Iโve read itโs still usable after 6mo but loses some of its magic after that time. Womp Womp

Circling back to the rooming in discussion, Iโm having all kinds of guilt (which I know is silly) because the nurses keep taking LO out of our room. Heโs having a lot of issues with coughing up mucus though. Birth story still to come but (spoiler) he came out so freakin fast that he spent next to no time in the birth canal and so didnโt get the gunk squeezed out properly, hence the mucus.
Iโm so exhausted that I was falling asleep holding him a few minutes ago (not safe obviously) so I put him in his bassinet but within minutes he was gagging again. I called the nurse to let her know it happened again, and when she came in she insisted on taking him out so they can keep a close watch on him.
I know I should take advantage now and rest. I just really hope he gets everything cleared before we go home tomorrow because I am not going to be able to sleep at all unless I am confident heโs okay.
I also hope it clears because they think itโs a big reason heโs not looking to nurse. Heโs coming up on 20 hours old and he has nursed 3 times (plus gotten many drops of colostrum that I put on his lips at every attempted feeding) so itโs not dire but Iโm worried now about my milk coming in.
There is always something to worry about no matter how many babies you have! ๐ฉ

dashook seriously have no guilt about that! Try to get some rest while you can. Is YH there? I remember DS2 spit up a bunch of amniotic fluid. I also fell asleep holding him ๐ฌ. The nurse was less than nice about it. I canโt remember if she offered to take him or not though.

Definitely check with your insurance to see what kind of lactation consults are covered, and seek help as soon as you run into problems. My first visit with the LC took nursing from excruciating to normal painful, which lingered for 2-3 weeks. Then it became painless. Your hospital may also have a nursing/postpartum warmline which is free to use. Then you can call and speak to a nurse or LC with any questions. There are also La Leche League meetings, Baby Cafe (WIC but available to all) and new mom's groups who can provide breastfeeding support. So basically expect problems to happen and know what resources are available!

I go with the assumption of terrible expectations and anything better than that seems like I got cut some slack Lol Like I said, DS1 was a much better learning experience than DS2. Nothing cracked or bleeding the first time, all the pain the second time. I have no expectations for this third baby.

I remember when I first went to see an LC outside the hospital with DS1. The LC asked what the issues were. I said...โIโll just take my shirt off and show youโ. Her eyes about popped out of her head ๐ณ. Lol. apparently she hadnโt ever seen such damaged nipples. but we worked through it. Nursed him 19 months!
