dashook ds3 also spit up a TON in the first 30 hours. It would be like 3 hours after feeding and he would just wake up and hurl. The nurses said it was likely extra amniotic fluid. He's been so much better since he got it all out!

@amc yeah I am not opposed to pumping and feeding him from a syringe or bottle if needed until he starts to show more interest. Hoping not to have to but whatever he needs, Iβll do. He is an excellent nurser once he latches so I am optimistic. Weβre just going to have to work at the latching. strawberrykiki I was worried about nursing too and it definitely is tough. Thereβs no getting around it. I almost gave up a few times with DS. In the end we went 16 months even though we had to use a nipple shield the whole time. It was worth it and I loved it. And I was rewarded with the most amazing nurser in DD. And I canβt wait to do it again with this new little guy!

dashook I hope your newest little is a good nurser! Iβve read about nipple shields but it seems like some people suggest it just as a temporary solution? Whatβs the harm or is there any if it helps give you some relief?

Whatβs the harm or is there any if it helps give you some relief? In general they are designed to be a temporary solution and a lot of moms use them to provide some protection if they have some damage while the damage heals. I definitely am in a vast minority in having used it for more than a couple weeks. But in our case DS1 had a mild tongue tie (which I opted not to clip) that prevented him from latching well onto my nipple because he couldnβt get his mouth around it properly. So the shield gave him a bigger target, if you will, and he did great with it. It is something extra that you have to carry with you always or else youβre kinda screwed. One time when he was like 8 months old I lost one and so I tried to latch him without itβdisaster! That time I was able to pump and just give him a bottle and then go buy a new one the next day. But if you forget one at home and you are out in public somewhere, you donβt have a lot of options. Definitely pros and cons.

Ughhhhh This kid won't stop pressing her heel into my belly button! It's that or hooking herself up under my desk so that I can't scoot my chair back very easily. Rude.

I had a similar experience to k, but my issue was due to major overproduction causing DS1 to latch on and off because the flow was choking him so much. They cracked terribly, I will never forget his little vampire mouth after each feeding. That said I worked through it, they healed, I had zero issues with DS2, nursed them each 2 years and hope to have the same experience with this one. Our board seems more skewed to horror stories but that isn't the case for everyone! I agree though it's best to try to prepare yourself for any possibility and have resources handy.

+1 for fear of nursing #2 I struggled early on with BF DD, cracked really bad after day 1. Had a lot of pain and frustration. In hindsight, she definitely had/has a lip tie. We used a nipple shield the whole journey- 9 months when pumping destroyed my nips beyond repair and I had to stop everything.
Side PSA- there are different sized pump flanges and that can make a huge difference in efficiency and skin breakdown

I think today is going to be rough. Started off not wanting to wake up (shocker), forgot my phone at home, and then proceeded to hand a customer a clipboard instead of their paperwork and I didn't realize what I was doing until they confusedly tried to take the clipboard. I'm done. Send me home, please.
Also, my ears were plugged this morning on the way into work and finally seemed to loosen up while I was dealing with my cars but then they hurt so bad! Like, ear infection level stabbing except I've had no other symptoms of an ear infection. Took some Tylenol that seemed to help some but now I'm nauseous and not want to go home. Bleh.
On the plus side, only 6 weeks left as of today! Almost down to the one-hand countdown....

I was so terrified of the dogs chewing the only shield I had, I bought 4 packs on amazon. I keep one in his diaper bag, 1 upstairs, 1 downstairs, and one just in case, maybe i'll throw it in my purse. There is real fear of not having it when I need it for sure, but it's working for us so.... π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ

Do you know if youβll have access to LCβs while youβre there? That can be a great help too. I never felt a single contraction (BH or otherwise) when I was pregnant with DS. Even in labor I wasnβt always sure if I was having one unless I looked at the monitor π

Weβre home!!
LO morphed into a super-hungry nursing champ sometime last night! Since midnight last night he has nursed 12 times for a total of almost 3 hours. My milk definitely is coming inβitβs always such a strange (and not entirely comfortable) feeling!
He has been ultra sleepy (it was a busy and stimulating day) so I have been having to wake him up every 3 hours to make sure he eats. Hoping that continues overnight because then I can just set an alarm to get up and feed him. I would dearly love to get 2 or more 3-hour stretches. Wish me luck!

strawberrykiki My hospital gave me two nipple shields when I had DD. However, I had an amazing LC and Iβm not sure every hospital provides them. Iβd probably buy one, leave it in the pack and keep the receipt incase you donβt end up needing it.. just incase! Lucky you for not being able to feel those contractions! dashook yay for being home and your milk coming in. So glad LO is nursing well for you!

Re: nursing - I struggled a bit with figuring out DSβs tiny latch and had to experiment with different holds. What was most helpful was when an NP observed a feeding at DSβs first pedi appt. She explained that my engorgement and forceful letdown was making it tough for him. Hand expression was a bust, so I ended up pumping just until letdown before latching him, and it made a world of difference. People have strong opinions about pumping so early, but it worked for us. I think thatβs what it comes down to at the end of the day - do what works for you and your babe. This time, Iβm most worried about having to parent DS while nursing LO. DS and I spent a LOT of time just lounging in the glider and nursing on demand throughout the day. Things wonβt be so leisurely for this kiddo! After the first few weeks pass, Iβm hoping to figure out BFing with a carrier so that I can be a bit more mobile. ETA +1 to TashaLa - sizing down in flanges was another lifesaver!

Ugh I just hate pumping. but if it would help latch itβs worth it.

We have a flat tire π. Our tires are less than a year old and the place we usually go to gave us a high quote. and snow is on the way. so this means the baby is coming right?

I've put on 5 pounds this week without changing my diet, and I think it's all from swelling. The OB says it's not medically a problem since my blood pressure and urine protein levels are both good. But it is so uncomfortable!

SPD pain started suddenly Monday afternoon when I got out of the car. Then grocery shopped (stupid choice) and by yesterday I'm limping and hardly moving anywhere. Feel like I just came to terms with the idea of not being able to do as much the rest of this trimester, and being okay with needing lots of help during c section recovery. Now this, I am feeling stressed and frustrated at how much it affects daily life... And puts on DH. He's being a saint about it though.

sunshiney, SPD is a bitch. Mine seemed fairly tame yesterday but omg today it's awful, even with my memory foam pillow to help at work.

With respect to BF, it was so different with both my girls. I think primarily because of my attitude. With DD1 it took a lot to get going, but we got there. DD2 had a really shallow latch, but I was so relaxed about it it was fine. I think it helped that I only had a few months in between weaning DD1 and starting DD2. I weaned them both around 22 months.
This time the only thing I am really worried about it engorgement. Both prior times I was a milk machine and it took a while to get the excessive quantities of milk under control!

The OB office was packed and running behind so I spent 2 hours there this morning. Not how I wanted to spend a lot of my only day off. I had planned to get a pedicure but abandoned it because I was starving and ready to go home. I have a date for my csection if I make it that far which is exciting and scary. We pushed it a little past 37w so I could schedule with my favorite OB. I really need to start getting things ready for this baby girl!!!

And I just remembered that we still need to install our car seat bases! That would have been an awkward moment at discharge...I think Iβll set the seat in the living room this weekend so that we donβt forget (again).
We also have snow moving in for the weekend. I still get just as excited about it as I did when I was a kid. Maybe I can convince DS that his snowsuit is not a torture device and get him to play in the snow with me.
