piratecat You gonna come join me over on TTGP?!? Yes! I'm getting my IUD on Friday. My cycles were shitty and it took us a while to get pregnant the first time so I have no idea how things will go this time around.

I’ve never gotten an IUD before but want to. Was going to go with the copper, try hormone free since I’ve been in BCP on and off for 12 years and always have acne. Any thing I don’t know that I should know? I’ve had 3 of these suckers. Each experience was different. The first time- insertion was a BITCH. I had contractions and almost passed out from the pain. The first month was pure agony. Once I got my period, it was better, but I would have debilitating cramps each month. Removal was a breeze. This was pre-baby. I didn’t notice an increase in flow (TMI, but I’m really heavy normally) Second time- post DS1. Insertion was a breeze, only minor cramping during my periods. Removal was a pain because my OB cut the strings too short. It made sex less enjoyable, though. Third time- post DS2. Minor cramping, no noticeable difference in flow. Insertion was easy and so was removal. Again, it made sex less enjoyable, but my MW was thinking it was sitting too low. It made certain positions painful. I had each one for 1-2 years, removed for TTC each time. Only once did I have a pregnancy scare (before I really understood ovulation timing and LPs). I like it because my normal hormones didn’t result in the teenage style acne I had while on hormone bc, and it only slightly threw things off after removal (like, mid cycle spotting and such)

Yes, all paraguard. I got off hormonal BC in 2012 and never looked back

Any thing I don’t know that I should know? I've used Mirena (I know, not copper) three times with no issues. First implant was prior to kids and sucked, I cramped like a mo-fo and puked. Following times were much easier. I will get again if I don't get tied next time. We had a good reason for noting using copper but I can't remember now. TBH, Dh did the research as he is in the medical field.

I'm getting my Mirena tomorrow. It will be my first IUD. It was recommended by my doctor based on my lupus. I've done fairly well with hormonal BC in the past but can't take oral contraceptives with lupus, so this was her first choice for me. The hormones are local because of the placement, and they shouldn't affect the rest of my body as much as a BCP.

@starzia, there are also different hormonal IUDs with varying levels of hormone so you might look into those as well and discuss with your doctor. I have the Skyla which has a much lower amount than the Mirena but doesn't last as long, which was fine for me.
