I’ve been meaning to write this, even though it was a repeat c section I still want to have it documented.
My RCS was scheduled for 11/29 at 7:30am and we had to be at the hospital by 5am. I was grateful it was early because I couldn’t have anything to eat or drink after midnight. Just a sip of water with the Pepcid I had to take. My H and I got to L&D and they got me on the IV. The nurse that got me checked in and set up is actually my boss’ wife and I adore her so it was nice to have a familiar face. Once the IV was in we sat for a while and watched TV and the sun coming up. It still did not feel real to either of us that this was happening.
Around 7:15 they came in and gave my husband his scrubs and told us the anesthesiologist would be there any minute to take me back to the OR to get the spinal. My H would have to stay behind until I was all prepped and the sheet was up. The anesthesiologist and his assistant (I don’t know what they call them) came in to get me and they could not have been nicer. We walked to the OR, passed the nurses station where everyone cheered (they call it the red carpet walk). It was surreal walking into an OR. I got up on the table and they prepped me for the spinal. I was hella nervous bc I remember the epidural with my son hurting pretty bad. This.....did not hurt that bad and I thanked the anesthesiologist over and over for “doing such a good job.” Lol. The meds kicking in felt so weird. My dr was in at this point and all the nurses were prepping. Once I was ready they did a “time out” where everyone in the room said who they were and what their position is, once they got to me I said my name and in a funny voice said “the mother.” One of the nurses turned music on and it was Aretha Franklin. Then my husband came in.
When they started I felt fine, after a few minutes I felt a little dizzy but it went away quickly. When they took Dylan out, they lowered the blue drape so we could see him through the clear plastic sheet behind it, it was amazing and I cried. The dr commented on his perfect round head and he let out some loud cries. I was so happy to be able to see him enter the world. After a few minutes my H went over to get him and bring him to me. I got to spend a few minutes with him and then they took him to the nursery. I had to spend the next hour in recovery because L&D got so slammed they didn’t have enough nurses there to monitor me. So my husband did skin-to-skin and I snoozed in recovery with a lot of really old snoring people and a nice nurse who kept waking me up to check my bleeding and see if I could feel my legs.
When I got back to my room they brought Dylan in right away and we had skin-to-skin and about an hour later he nursed. Compared to my first delivery I could not believe how much smoother this process went.
