Since we are all nearing the 1yr mark (some sooner than others)...with DD I wanted to nurse forever & she weaned herself at 16mo. She had stopped nursing overnight on her own around 9mo though so I was happy to keep nursing during the day. With DS now I am wanting to try wean at 1 year but he is still waking once a night to nurse. I feel like I should cut the overnight feed first but don’t know how. Since I didn’t need to do this with DD I’m totally lost at how to even go about it or just weaning in general??

I have been pumping or breastfeeding for 13.5 month, I am done. For MOTN I just did “CIO” (he didn’t actually cry he fussed for 5 and went back to sleep. He was also getting up 3x MOTN to nurse and it was slowly killing me. It took 3 days boom STTN. For feeding during the day I just replaced the breast with a bottle, 1 feeding a week. I have enough freezer milk for most of December so he’ll get cow milk once I run out. He’s only getting 4 bottles at the moment. I’ll see what the doctor says next week about going to 3. He eats lots of food so I am not concerned with that.

I’ve tried CIO but he either gets so worked up or he just fusses/sleeps for 10 min, wakes up to fuss, sleeps again for 10 min, etc etc.

DD should not be need to nurse overnight either. But considering that any further attempts at sleep training may end in divorce, I'm at a loss. I'm less than helpful on this topic. I wholeheartedly agree with wanting my body back.

My kids didn’t wake up anymore if they were not getting boob.

Overnights are killing me now. DS is usually waking twice and I'm over it. I'm weaning the first feed by minutes. 5 minutes last night 4 tonight etc. After 2 I think I will just CIO if he doesn't drop it on his own.

I wasn't able to breastfeed, but this is basically what we did with bottles. I decreased the amount every night for about 5 days and then let him cry it out on the last night. He cried for about 10 minutes. He's now been sleeping through the night for about 6 weeks.

I didn't start weaning feeds with ds1 until after a year. Ds2 now gets 2 or 3 bottles at daycare then i nurse after work and before bed and once or twice overnight and first thing in the am and I think it was pretty similar at this point with ds1. I'm weaning overnight now but not worrying about daytime. I let daycare deal with bottle weaning so I don't even think about that. After overnight the next one I cut was after work (around 18 months) because I felt it was interfering with dinner. I think I mostly distracted him with playing. You are bfing and pumping now right misspatty. If you want to be done by a year I would try to start dropping some feeds now. If you are ok with extended bfing I wouldn't worry.

I'm going to bump this to ask a question. How do you drop feeds? The pedi indicated DD should be down to 3-4 feeds per day by now. She's still doing the same exact 6 feeds she's been doing since... basically 12 weeks. How do I cut those down? Which one do I start with? I don't really get it. She's hungry and gets pissed if I try to offer her solids instead during those times. I've been wondering the same. DS eats food or a puree 3x a day, but still seems to very much need all the bottles he had before. He is almost 9.5 months so I'm not sure when or how to start dropping those!

Also, a separate question....but how did you know if and when you were done breastfeeding? When pregnant I assumed I would only do it for a few months but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would so I'm still going. I do supplement with formula since I don't produce enough but he still nurses 4 or 5x a day.
I'm over pumping but I don't know when I'll feel ready to stop breastfeeding. Did you ever get to a point where you were just done?
We dealt with IF so I think part of the reason I'm worried about stopping is because I worry he may be our only baby (although I hope not!)

With DD1 she nursed till 26 months. Right around when she turned 2 I started to dislike it, then kind of hated it. I would get annoyed at her for nursing (we were down to just once before bed) and that’s when I realized it needed to stop. We went out of town for a few nights, and in the change of scene she forgot to ask to nurse one night, and that was the end.

He is getting teeth so he’s not necessarily sleeping through the night but I have not been nursing him at that time anymore & he has been totally happy with the cuddles. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Did you ever get to a point where you were just done? We dealt with IF so I think part of the reason I'm worried about stopping is because I worry he may be our only baby (although I hope not!) I think you both will know when it’s right. H and I went on an overnight trip (3 nights) when DD was 16mo and I cried hard about it because I was afraid she would wean while I was gone or I’d dry up from not nursing & only pumping for 3 days...I was so not ready. We came home & she kept nursing but only about a month longer. She gradually just stopped wanting to at different times & she would just latch on for a second and pop right off. I just stopped forcing her to stay on the breast when she did that & eventually just quit offering all together. It was weird because by the time we did stop I felt so good about it...so different than I’d felt a month before. It’s defintiely something where you can wake up one day and just be so ready to be done with it. I understand how you’re feeling about it though, its something I have really enjoyed more than I ever imagined & it has felt very special for both my kids. This whole time I’ve thought I’d wean DS right at one year just because he’s such a mama’s boy im ready for space lol. As we get closer though I think I will probably let him continue for awhile, at least first thing AM & before bed. The nice thing about nursing an older baby is they are more flexible. If I did a night away & DS didn’t nurse before bed he would be fine that night. It’s more about connecting with mama/comfort than nutrition at that point.

Thank you bassa, dragonflyinn, and sunfrogger! That helps a lot. Whenever my mom or someone asks how long I plan to breastfeed for my answer is always- hmm...no idea? I am just hoping one day I just "feel" done and that's that. You give me hope that's the case

I'm not quite sure on the best way to drop feedings. My older two self-weaned at 16 months. My dd1 dropped night feedings by 8-9 months and dd2 around 12-13 months. I think my ds2 drop night feedings around 7-8 months, but nursed until 21 months when he self-weaned. My dd3 was the most boob obsessed and continued night nursing (not a problem for me) until 18+ months. It was right around 32 months that I told her nuh-nuh milk was gone. She told me I needed new ones. But to my surprise, it wasn't a big deal. She was fine. No issues at all.
Teddy sleeps with us, just as my older kids did. He still nurses on demand and 8+ times a day and nursing still makes up 95% of his diet. Dropping feedings isn't anywhere on my radar. I presume he'll nurse for 2+ years.

We haven’t done night feedings in months except for if he wakes up screaming and nothing else calms him down. My goal is to get to a year and re-evaluate but I’m done pumping at a year (it’s been a pain with my job situation). We will probably nurse on demand/bedtime and wake up until closer to 15 months. DS1 naturally weaned but I can tell DS2 is going to be hard. He freaks out if I’m around and he’s remotely hungry at all.

kbw I'm definitely done pumping at a year and counting down the days. I'm only pumping 1× a day and making up the difference with frozen stash. Can not wait. Ds1 weaned at almost 2. I was in 2nd tri with the baby and I did push it a bit but the pregnancy supply drop helped a lot.

I remember weaning being easier as baby gets better with a sippy cup. We usually give cow's milk in a sippy with meals starting around 1 year and water in between and the transition has always been really seamless. She gets water with meals now but that hasn't decreased her bottle frequency at all. All of my kids drank 6-8 bottles a day right up until age 1, my ped never mentioned it was a problem.
We do use a bottle at bedtime beyond 1 year. We wean from that by making it more dilute - gradually adding one less scoop of formula and watering it down until it's all water, then transitioning to a sippy. My 2 and 4 year olds still get sippies at night.

I think it's probably different for everyone. I still nurse DS1 and he is 2.5 years old lol. I never stopped enjoying it, and he continued to want it, so I just let him. I have only been nursing him before nap and before bedtime since DS2 was born. DS2 however just recently self-weaned at 9.5 months lol. They are SO different when it comes to nursing. He just started totally refusing/screaming at the breast so he is only doing bottles now. My personal opinion is if you still enjoy it, and baby still enjoys it, keep going!

I had to do CIO with DS1 to cut the overnight feeds. It sucked but worked pretty quickly and was life-changing!

3 more months of the pump. I can do this!
I will continue to nurse after 1 but I'm not pumping anymore.
But definitely going to have to pump 3x until 11 mo to get enough. Ufgggg.

Speaking of breastfeeding I want to scream. I’ve been in meetings all morning so I just took my lunch and went to pump (for reference it’s 12:30 and I haven’t nursed/pumped since 5:30 this morning). I have a 1:00-3:00 meeting and someone is in the only pump room we have. I had such a better relationship last time with breastfeeding because I could actually have time/place to pump. Now it looks like I’m going until 3:00 without any time to pump.
