We're starting full time care for the first time! Help me our with your tips and things you'd wished someone told you. V currently attends preschool at this daycare, the teacher, classroom and kids will remain the same. Instead of going for 2.5 hours MWF, he will be there M-F for up to 9 hours each day. He'll be eating meals (daycare provides food) and taking naps there. They've told me all he needs to bring for transitioning to full time care is a blanket and we're planning to send one of his dream blankets. I also need opinions on my plan: we're starting full time schedule two weeks before we actually need it. I was thinking it would be easier on him if I could gradually extend the length of his day there. What else should I buy/do/prepare? I'm particularly worried about nap/meals and well everything

That prolly is a good idea to gradually intro him. At least he does already go there so he is familiar w the kids and teachers.
Do you need to bring an extra change of clothes for him? Ours requires 2 sets. What about sunscreen? Do they apply that for the kids? Mine asks us to do it at home in the AM but they will reapply before going out in the afternoon.

Extra clothes, sunscreen, and insect repellent for his cubby. You may have to sign a form giving them permission to put the sunscreen and repellent on him (ours requires it). Cadence takes a fitted sheet (to go over the mat) and a blanket for nap time. Plus, if he needs a lovey or whatever for naptime as well. Cadence has a baby doll that stays at school, plus whatever stuffed item she grabs as she heads out the door.
You might see if they will allow certain snacks to keep in his cubby, just in case he doesn't like what they are having for lunch. Are you allowed to bring his lunch? If so, I would see if they have a monthly menu so that you can determine what days you want him to take his lunch and which days you think he will eat what they have there.
Don't stress if he doesn't nap some days. It happens. It will just be a matter of if he can not nap quietly. Usually it isn't a problem if they stay on their mats and play quietly or look at books.....says the mom whose kid gets sent to the office fairly regularly because her kid can't not nap quietly.

yummeecookee, I'll have to ask about an extra change of clothes. Right now he has one set for preschool. Do you put their name on everything or is that crazy?

No names any more. Cadence knows what is hers and what isn't. That isn't to say she won't take someone else's clothes because she likes them, though....

klong11, the center provides sunscreen but I haven't asked about insect repellent = add to my to do list. I have no idea if I'm allowed to bring in food for him. There's a new student in his class with a but allergy so there is now a warning no nuts sign on his class. It would make sense to me that you'd be able to bring food if they have that sign for parents. I'm both excited and worried about him eating meals there, he's doing so well in feeding therapy that I'm hopeful he's ready for that but also concerned he could try to go all day without eating.

I put his name on everything. Honestly, I just write it in sharpie on the tag or near the tag. Lately I just label it with our last name b/c I know it will be handed down to his brother.
I second extra of everything - underwear, etc. I can't remember if V is potty trained, but if he is, he may have more accidents at first b/c he gets too wrapped up in what he is doing and there is no one keeping an extra eye on if he needs to go.

csho, since he does have food issues, even if it's not the norm, maybe you can ask about leaving certain things there, some of his favorites, so that if he is really struggling, they can give it to him.

yummeecookee, klong11, jewelsWhat can I expect as far as communication? Right now it's basically "He had a great day, he made ____ art project today. See ya next time!" Because yeah, not a lot happens in 2.5 hours but 9 hours seems staggeringly more.

My current DC is really bad w communication. They email any impt announcements, sickness alerts, closures, theme days. But as far as daily activity, I have to pull teeth to get that. I only know what B has eaten bc I see it on C's daily sheet. In the 3s room they don't do any daily sheet- she has a journal that the teacher writes in once a week, to let us know what they're working on and include any pics.
Maybe your D.C. will be better though. Before we moved, the one she was at had a fancy online system that I could even access through a phone app to see pics, and any daily updates.

We get the important updates. It used to be that they would tell us everything, but now, with preschool, it's just whether they were good or not, what they might need to work on as far as getting along with others or whatnot. If she doesn't eat, they let me know and if she doesn't nap they let me know. Other than that, not much information. They do send me pictures during their activity time though.

I find it depends on the teacher. My current teacher is terrible with communication. I get a daily sheet that is often not even totally filled out. And really just says if he ate (and they just circle All, most, some or none). A prior teacher used to text me pics all the time, etc.
As to labelling - yes he knows what's his, but I guess it's just habit for me now. I suppose everyone is right though, there really is no need anymore. Except the food and water bottle. that has to be labelled.

C has been to two different daycares and his current preschool. His first daycare from infant to 2.5 and his current preschool don't tell me anything about his day. His current has a list of who napped. They leave any remaining food in his lunch box so I know what he ate but otherwise I don't have a clue. The second daycare we were only at a few months. They emailed daily reports of bathroom usage, food intake, and activities. It was nice but truthfully it didn't make much of a difference to me.
For stuff he has an extra set of clothes, fitted sheet, blanket, stuffed animal for nap, and a water bottle. We do sunscreen before school and they reapply at lunch with their stuff. I label everything.

We also send a water bottle. And sheet/blanket are sent home weekly. Since he already goes 2.5 hours a day it will hopefully be a smooth transition. Maybe have him stay for lunch and pick up before naptime for a few days, then nap there and pick up around 3:30 and then all the way to the end of the day. Thats how they transitioned us into our current school.
I label lunch/water bottles, but haven't done clothes for a while. Good luck!

We leave water bottles at daycare for both kids. For whatever reason having water at pickup makes the transition from daycare to car to home easier on them. Probably tired/thirsty and cold water at the end of the day is refreshing.
I would also suggest extra clothes and such for spills/accidents if you haven't already planned for that. We also send book bags to daycare to transport things to and from home.
