Can we talk about names? I know some people prefer to keep names private but I think some of us would be okay with discussing names now that half of us are in the 3rd trimester. Time is flying!

I posted a few weeks ago that we had pretty much chosen a name but I’ve been questioning it the past week or two. With DD we chose a name at 13 weeks and never looked back so this back and forth, can’t choose a name business is new to me. We originally liked Lucy but after MIL told us she used to watch a little girl named Lucy and she was terrible yada yada don’t name her Lucy 🙄 we decided to look at other names.
At the time we also liked Alice but when we cane across Lila Rose, we decided that was the name we liked best. DD ran with Lila and has been calling baby that for weeks. MH was/is totally on board with Lila but I’m not sure if it feels 100% right to me. I keep going back to Lucy which was MHs favorite name in the beginning (along with Alice) and he still likes it a lot. We’ve also decided we like the idea of using Marie as a MN, that was my middle name and my Dads mother’s middle name. She passed away when he was young and I like the idea of honoring him and her by using that name and MH is on board. My Dad passed away in 2012 and I know he’d love his granddaughter to carry that name down so it’s extra special to me. Help? As of now the top names are: Lila Rose, Lila Marie, Lucy Marie. They all are pretty IMO but choosing one has proved difficult this time around.

I like them all cch. I would go with Marie as the MN because of the extra meaning behind it. I also think your mom's association with the kid she watched will fade as soon as she has a granddaughter by that name -- I would consider it a nonfactor, honestly.

cch , I'd probably go with Lucy because there are so many similar names to Lila - Leila, Layla, etc that spelling might be more of an issue. I love the name though. You can't go wrong. Sorry, not helpful. ETA: If we had a 3rd girl, Leila (or alternate spelling) would be a top contender because of the heritage of the name.

notagoddess I really do love both names. I guess I just can’t let go of Lucy until giving that name a real chance. I do think the MN Marie is what I’ve been leaning towards lately so at least we have that! Hoping MH and I can figure out what feels right in the next few weeks. How’s everyone else doing with names?

This baby will be Daria. We've had the name settled since about 15 weeks and have told people the name. We're leaning towards no middle name. Neither H nor I have middle names. He loves it, but I wish I had one. If I had to pick a middle name, I really like Daria Natalie. I just don't know if I'm willing to try to convince H. It would be an uphill battle.

We are pretty sure we are set on a first name, but totally undecided on a middle name. Bother ds1&2 have family names for middle names, but there aren't really any I like/want to use/would go well with our first name choice. But then part of me feels strange about picking a random name when the others have family names. I know the middle name doesn't get used a whole lot, but I still feel like it's so important!

cch Lol that is the #1 reason we are not sharing our name! We're afraid to hear any opinions that could influence us. Once baby's here and named, we're expecting people will keep any negative opinions to themselves. In your situation, I think it's coming through loud and clear that you and YH would love to name your daughter Lucy Marie. Go for it! Or at least, look at Lucy vs. Lila without factoring in MIL's opinion. It's a gorgeous name. And after teaching for 10 years, probably my 3rd most disliked student ever was a LucyMarie, but that doesn't mean a thing - I agree that your MIL will forget all about the old Lucy and your daughter will redeem the name for her very quickly! notagoddess Ooh, love Daria! I hope you get your way on the MN name. In my book, your preference trumps YH's because the regret/loss like you experienced of not having a MN when you wanted one is more of a risk that missing out on your LO potentially feeling special for not having one the way YH does. redhead610 I agree, the meaning and importance of the name are so important to me too! I totally shocked myself by going with a (too popular for me, random) name that DH decided he loved (his criteria is, does he like it when he hears it lol) because I found it was a variant of a name that was a variant of a name that can be considered a variant of a family name that means a lot to me. The name's meaning too felt special. I wonder if you can expand your search a bit by finding names that share a meaning or similar meaning with a family name, or are some kind of variant, so this child can be told, "your MN is a connection to so-and-so" just like the older siblings'? @amc There's a big percentage of parents who make the final choice after meeting the baby, maybe that will be perfect for you guys and you will just know!!

We aren't telling anyone in our circle the name, but when randos or people whose opinion we don't really care about ask, sometimes we share. Of the maybe half dozen people who have heard our chosen FN + MN, we've gotten very lukewarm to borderline negative responses...which surprises me because there's nothing Kreeaytif or attention-seeking about it or anything. But DH loves it, I'm on board, and we've been calling baby this between the two of us for most of the pregnancy, so we are sticking with it and feeling good about it! Although DH asks me semi regularly if I'm still sure, because he knows it's not my top choice. But I feel so good about how special it is for him to love this name, and I get so much say over basically everything baby and parenting related, it's an easy one to give him!

sunshiney, I let H pick the first name for DD as well. He loved it and I found it really sweet. No regrets. I did tell him I'm getting first choice on this one!

We don't have a name. Not even close. I have a list of 10 or so. DH's top choice isn't my favorite. My preference would be to have three or so names and decide once we see him.

notagoddess Daria is super sweet. If you really want a MN for her YH should let you get that but if not, no MN is cool too! I think Natalie goes great with Daria! redhead610 I totally understand your feelings about a family MN. We’re leaning towards using my MN for this LO (also my mom and grandmothers MN) but DD didn’t get a family name. At first I felt like it might be weird to give DD2 a family name but not DD1 but I’ve since gotten over that. If DD1 ever asks I’ll just tell her she was so special she didn’t get a family name lol At least y’all are fairly certain of a first name! The MN will come with time. @amc you still have plenty of time. I have friends who figured out their twins full names a week before their DD. And like PP mentioned, lots of people wait to name baby until they see them which would give me anxiety but it’s also really cool when you think about it. Either way, I’m sure it’ll come to you! k thank you! I do too! It’s such a simple, but pretty and classic name. sunshiney You’d think people would just keep negative name opinions to themselves 🤷🏼♀️ My husbands cousin and his wife didn’t tell anyone either of their children’s name before they were born and I totally get it. wildflowers I think narrowing it down to a few names and waiting to see LO is really neat. I considered doing that with Lila vs Lucy but doubt I’ll make it that far without choosing one.

I love the name Lucy. Lila is really pretty too though!
We have four names picked out: Finn, Conor, Ardan, or John and call him Jack. We have middle names picked out too to go with whatever we choose. We aren’t telling anyone what our choices are and we are waiting until he’s born to decide. We feel like we need to see him first. We haven’t done anything else to get ready for him but at least we have some names lol

cch, I love everything about Lucy Marie. Sentimentality aside, it's my type of name preference lol Honestly, I'm surprised I'm still really on board with our name choice, Austyn North. I mean, the middle name was going to be North regardless so it's more surprising I'm still loving Austyn. As bad as I am at sticking with names, I thought I'd be second guessing it by now. We haven't had any negative remarks about it when we tell people which is not what I expected. Or maybe everyone is just good at pretending not to hate it around us! Lol I'm always hesitant to tell people because I expect some sort of not great comment about either Austyn being a weird name for a girl or North being associated with Kanye/Kim K. Sometimes it happens, but more than not, people say they really like it.

strawberrykiki I adore Finn. I could never get SO on board with it for DS but it is one of my favs. We have no names. Nothing feels right. I know we have plenty of time to decide but it is stressing me out. I keep reading lists and lists and we can't find anything we really like.

cch Lucy and Lila are both adorable! I say to go with your gut feeling - if you keep coming back to Lucy and YH still likes it, then go with it! It's so classic and (bonus) easy to spell. My BFF used to make similar comments to what your MIL said..."Oh, that name? But what about this random kid we went to grade school with 25 years ago who had the SAME name?" Meh. Like notagoddess said, MIL will learn to think of the name in an entirely different way. strawberrykiki Finn is one of my favorite boy names! I wish MH would have liked it more. With DS, we chose a name that we both loved, but it sounded so clunky and grownup for a newborn. I got used to it, and it completely fits DS now. For this LO, we had a boy name chosen for a while, but we could not find a girl name that fit. Luckily, we're having a boy, so that worked itself out. Whew!

cch both names are pretty. I think if you keep coming back to Lucy, then you shouldn’t discard it, especially not for your MIL’s sake. We have our names, I think. Neither of them blows me away. The girl name is pretty and classic but I feel it’s not as interesting as our other kids’ names. However, the FN is after DH’s sister that passed away as a child and the MN is for my grandfather so it is meaningful. I have so many beautiful girl names on my list and FFTC I am a little bummed that we aren’t discussing them 😕 Our boy name I do like. It’s the boy name we would have used if DD had been a boy. My only hesitation is that the FN is significantly more popular than my other kids’ names are. The upside to it is MH is on board so I don’t have to listen to any more of his terrible suggestions lol

We are set on a boy’s name, still thinking about middle names but it will probably be John- a nod to many people in my family including my cousin who just passed.
We still haven’t decided on a girl’s name.

Good morning ladies! Love the names so far, jealous of those who are set. I still haven't started looking. I need to finish a writing project (the one thing I can put on my resume when I go back into law someday, ha) first and then I will hop on ancestry and really seriously look. I feel like I am flying by the seat of my pants in some ways this pregnancy but at the same time know what I need to do so am more expeditious about it, I guess!

We're going with Vincent for his first name and Roman for his middle name. Roman is my FIL's MN and H's grandfather's First name so we like that it's a strong name but also family name. We have a really strong last name and Vincent goes really well with it. He can go by lots of nicknames. We've been calling him Vinny for now. We've had a boy and girl name picked out since last year so it was really easy.

cch - I really like all three of your names. I have always loved the name Lucy. I had no idea when or if we were ever going to have kids so I named our dog Lucy. Part of me wished I hadn't so I could have used it for a future DDs name. It's so pretty. We're having a boy so it's a non issue at this point though. I'm also a huge fan of Lila!

TashaLa your maiden name is very cute as a first or middle name! How many syllables is your married last name? That might help me think of some good girl middle name suggestions for you!
