With DD, I waited until she showed interest before starting solids but there’s no history of allergies so that’s not as big of a concern for us. DD was curious around 6 months so that’s when I imagine DS will be. ETA: I heard about this study too: my pedi recommended starting between 4-6 months, crazy to think we are so close already! I think avocado was our first with DD, or maybe banana. One of those for him too.

I plan to do baby led weaning again and it is recommended waiting until six months or until the baby can sit up in a high chair on their own. We also don’t have a history of allergies in our family.
That study (or a similar study) came out when we were doing blw with my oldest and I told my pediatrician at the time that we gave her peanut butter and he freaked out. It was fun telling him to go read the study!

i remember the recommendation was 6 months with DS1, and then by DS2 they were starting to say maybe 4 months would be better. we tried with DS2 around 4-5 months with little success. IME they can't sit well yet and don't really have the coordination to move the food into the back of their mouths and swallow it. plus my kids haven't seemed interested until closer to 6 months.
we've done mostly BLW with both kids. with DS2 i did try giving fortified oatmeal at the beginning to try to get iron in him. DS1 was anemic at 9 months and DS2 was borderline but i was giving him iron drops proactively. i plan to give DS3 iron drops once he starts solids as well. we use the novaferrum one and the taste is unobjectionable. anyway, i'm rambling. TL;DR we'll probably wait until closer to 6 months.

We'll start somewhere between 4 and 6 months. I did purees with J and I think I might take a BLW approach this time. J became a super picky eater and I would rather not repeat that if I can help it at all.

I started DD1 a bit after 5 months because she was showing interest. I will probably do the same this time around.

With DS I started him on sweet potato at 5 months and then introduced a new veggie every few days before moving on to fruit. I also did the baby oatmeal as well. He was ready and LOVED food! He also started sleeping longer at night once we started solids. I'll probably start around 5 months with DD as well.

J became a super picky eater and I would rather not repeat that if I can help it at all. i'm not sure that BLW helps much with pickiness-- DS1 and DS2 have both had picky phases. i mean, they're not horrible, but they certainly don't eat as much variety as i would like and neither is real keen on vegetables.
with spoonable foods the BLW way to do it is to put the food on the spoon and then hand it to them so they can feed themselves. so you can do sort of a combo approach at first with purees/spoonable foods and some finger foods.

Also doing BLW here and will start when he's ready and interested. One thing I liked with DD was one of those silicone feeder thingies-not the mesh ones that are impossible to clean-that look like an oversized paci. I found she could do that well before a spoon and with less mess.
Man I'm excited for sticking his butt in a high chair and letting food distract and keep him happy for a bit.

We have a picture of DD sitting in the bumbo chair sucking on a pizza crust. She loved it

We'll start at 6 months and most likely do homemade purees. I will stick with veggies for a while.
Ds1 is the pickiest kid I've ever met and I'm hoping to avoid that this time. I didn't do solids in the "right" order (veg first then fruit) with him after listening to a friend who said it didn't matter. Maybe it's just a coincidence but I'm not taking the chance lol.

I'll be honest with you, I did veggies before fruit with DS and he ate and loved everything up until he turned 2. Now he's such a picky eater (like his father). I'm still going to do the same thing with DD but don't beat yourself up over it because I'm not sure if it makes a big difference.

FWIW we didn’t stick to an order and just gave her the basics in whatever order was most convienent, like if I was eating avocado, she got some. Our DD is an amazing eater, it takes her a few times of being offered something before she will try it but she eventually does and she loves a wide range of foods (mostly Mediterranean). I think it comes down to the personality of the kid, but also seeing it being eaten often around them.

The ped asked us to try a spoonful of something right before we bring him for his 4 month appointment. To see if he can swallow it or if he isn't there yet. We will, but most likely won't consistently offer just yet. I'm thinking a jar of green beans. Some kind of veg for sure.

Is there a reason or does he just want to see if he's ready for solids?

Is there a reason or does he just want to see if he's ready for solids? I think he just wants to see if he can physically swallow it/is ready. Maybe so he can tell us, go for it if you want, or tell us when to try again. I will do it but I'm probably not going to regularly offer it until a bit later.

With dd we did BLW at 6 months. Will do the same again. I am not looking forward to the mess nor the spraying of poop diapers (we use cloth diapers). EBF forever.

We started with A around 6 months. She was taking food off of people’s plates at Thanksgiving so that was our cue that she was ready. We did a mix of purées and BLW. I’d give her a little of our dinner to feed herself while we ate and then feed purées after. She’s always been a great eater, but I think that’s more her compliant personality than how I fed her.

I think we’re going to wait until she’s 6 months because then she’ll be 4.5 months adjusted. She’s starting to be interested in food but not reaching for it yet. With DS we started at 4.5 months with lots of veggies and then switched to more of a blw around 6 months. He’s not a picky eater but I think it’s his personality more than anything. I’m hoping to follow a similar path with dd.

GUISE don't ruin this for me! I have convinced myself doing it "right" will produce a non picky child. 😬

We did BLW with DS at 6 months and he's been a great eater. Now at almost 2.5, he's getting picky and it makes me crazy. I'll still do BLW with DD at 6 months though.

I did BLW with DD1 and plan to do it again with this one. She was an amazing eater up until I had the audacity to offer her a french fry dipped in vinegar and ever since then, she doesn't trust any food and became the world's pickiest eater. -_- It's just the easiest way to feed them for me. Nothing to puree, nothing extra to buy, don't even have to feed them lol. Just stick some steamed chopped veggies and fruit in front of them and watch them while they smear it all over their face. Fun times.

He's so damn stubborn that he really would rather go hungry than eat something he doesn't want. This is my ds1 as well. We didn't do therapy though. I'm hoping he will outgrow it. We can't force him to eat anything or he will gag and throw up if he doesn't like it. I've learned to just let him eat what he likes and try to get as much healthy foods in him (he loves fruit and yogurt and I can sneak spinach into smoothies without him knowing).
