Anyone care to discuss?
I may be out of the loop on a lot of stuff.

I'm in on any discussion, I am completely unaware at this point, which I know is unacceptable.

Me! Sherrod Brown is up for reelection. I love him. I know he's favored but I really haven't seen many ads or anything for him so I hope he still wins.
I am interested in Issue 1. It "makes drug possession and use offenses misdemeanors and allocates savings to treatment programs." As far as I can see that is a great thing. I am very pro drug reform and helping addicts get clean vs throwing them in jail. I know there are a lot of people opposed to it talking about "letting violent criminals free" but I don't see that being an issue. It isn't making high level trafficking a misdemeanor or anything. My one question is I would like to see the ability to order (and pay for) some sort of mandated treatment, drug court, or other support vs just a fine that people suffering from addiction can't pay anyway. Anyone want to discuss?

IMO there's a major difference if we're talking marijuana vs heroin or crystal meth. Does the issue call for them going to rehab vs jail? I have made a mental note to further look into this.

Oh and of course the governor. I used to hate Kasich but with everything going on now the fact that he's not totally insane is a plus so I'm scared of getting Dewine and him being worse. I've set the bar low. Who thinks Cordray can win?
And sadly I live just out of district 24 but will be following that race.

What I have noticed by my few looks into what's on our ballots is a lot of write-ins. That's just a waste, right? Is it safe to assume those people don't stand a chance?

I think I am pro issue 1, but need to do some more research. I hate DeWine. I also hope O'Connor can pull off this election, but I'm seeing very little from him this time around. He nearly won the special election, but I'm not sure if his chances would be better or worse in the general.

In general, I find so many of the political ads lately to be pure filth. They always have been, but since Trump things are just, I don't even know the words. Gross. So much fear mongering. So much thinly veiled racism and sexism. It's disgusting.
Lately, I am having a hard time being an Ohioan. I find myself frequently embarrassed to say I am from here.

I'm kind of glad I don't watch anything but PJ Masks on Netflix and Paw Patrol on DVD anymore. Saves me from the political ads.

My hesitation on this is when Judges were sentencing offenders to treatment in lieu of jail time, the warning to them was if they did drugs while in treatment then they would get jail time. A nice motivator to work really hard to stay clean. This change eliminates this. Our coroner is against Issue 1, for this reason.

IMO there's a major difference if we're talking marijuana vs heroin or crystal meth. Does the issue call for them going to rehab vs jail? I have made a mental note to further look into this. From what I see, it does not specify different drugs, it's all of them. I am still against jail time for drug possession, but I wish there was a way to break it down. Like weed you get a fine (or nothing preferably), heroin you are given a treatment program. And the wording is just that "it requires some of the money saved from less people in jail to go toward treatment programs in general. It also mentioned I think? anyone with a jail/prison sentence could earn credit toward that time by participating in educational or treatment programs which is cool. And it looks like the sentencing guidelines are retroactive so people currently serving time for possession could apply? Overall I think there are some flaws, I wish there was more wording to support addicts getting help vs just not throwing them in jail. But I'm still happy it's a step in the right direction. I am all for not sending drug users to prison.

I think I’m pro issue 1. I know there’s a group that’s against it, I can’t remember which, because there’s little to no jail time for those with fentanyl which is such a huge problem lately. I wish there was a tiered system so people would get rehab and there’s really no reason to have fentanyl.
I’m also in a red area. I get so excited to see a house with a democrat sign of some sort. I have just so much angst that I’m really nervous heading into this election. I strongly dislike Dewine. I also strongly dislike Steve Stivers but I don’t think Rick Neal has much of a chance. 😑

Bumping b/c I am still struggling with Issue 1. It feels really wrong voting against finding solutions other than jail for addicts. But the more research I do I'm getting concerned. I previously worked along side the drug courts which have been very successful here and have talked to people who still work there. The problem is drug courts are offered as a deal for no jail time. You have to attend meetings, treatment, etc. They might start with outpatient and order inpatient if you test positive. The problem is all of these steps are in exchange for not going to jail. Remove the threat of jail and there's no reason to participate. I don't want to send addicts to jail but I don't think they can order them to treatment either under this law.
I also wish it was a graduated system depending on the type of drug. The big push back right now is you can have a lot of fentanyl under this law and still get no jail time.
Thoughts? It's probably still better than what we have now, I don't know.
