I think I’m having a harder time than she is. But she’s still on narcotics and baby high. Her NICU road will he harder than mine because of surgery, not being able to drive and being so far away from mom. I will be calling to make a mental health appointment on Monday. Good for you for taking care of yourself ❤️

She’s having a spinal headache and nerve pain in her leg from the epidural, which sucks. But that means they’re keeping her in the hospital a few more days which is much more convenient since she lives so far away and can’t drive.
She’s going to stay at our Great Aunt’s house in town, but still, not convenient for anyone to drive her around.

Glad Bub is doing well! Congratulations Aunty Loony!
Ugh spinal headaches are awful. If they offer the blood patch, she should do it, instant relief for 4/5 people with spinal headaches (I was the unlucky 1/5 and it took three weeks for them to go away, caffeine and laying down was all that helped unfortunately).

I second the blood patch for spinal headache. That plus IV fluids, benadryl, and reglan took care of mine.

I just saw this and it brought tears to my eyes. I am so happy to hear that the baby is doing well. I am hoping your sister has a quick recovery. My DD was born at 29 weeks and was in the NICU for 10 weeks. I hope that the stay isn’t too long, it is hard to have a baby in the NICU. Even when you know it’s for the best. Keeping her and the baby in my thoughts.

It’s such an up and down crazy rollercoaster.

Or, sometimes insurance will help cover rides to and fro. And sometimes the social worker can help with bus rides (if that’s an option, idk what public trans is like where she lives) or taxis. Or if people want to help you can recommend an Uber or Lyft gift card?? My heart hurts for all the moms who have trouble getting to and from the NICU to see their babies. ESP immediately post delivery when a lot of times you’re not even cleared to drive. Is staying at the NICU a possibility? At mine, parents can stay at the bedside 24/7. Not the most comfortable recliners but they open up so they can lay down fully. but we do offer it to them as well as three meals a day for pumping moms. I hope her place has something similar?

Oh also, keeping you in my thoughts. I know you realize how hard this has been on you, make sure you take care of yourself, too. I’m glad you’re being proactive for your wellbeing too. It’s so hard to juggle caring for others while caring for yourself. 💛

Sorry she's not feeling well loony. Is there any chance she could ask for a transfer to a level 2 NICU somewhere closer to home or at least more convenient?

Wow, that's actually a great set up! Ours has boarder rooms off the unit but in the hospital for moms, and a smaller care-by-parent area of the unit, but meals are not provided for anyone.

Because of the spinal headache, they’re keeping her at the same hospital for at least a week. So it’s still a few days away from needing to totally figure it out. My great uncle is retired and lives one town over from the hospital, so would be her main (willing) transport. He also signs a little, and helped her a lot when she was at the school for the deaf in the same county. I know I was allowed to stay at mine, and fed, but yeah, that recliner would not have been comfortable at all after a c section. There’s a Ronald McDonald House, but it’s not on campus and she’s still have to rely on interpreters and bus transportation to get there. It will be okay, just more frustrating than if she could drive herself. I had an emergent VBAC, because nobody believed I was in labor (including myself) so I was cleared to drive after a few days and could just come and go as I pleased.

They had mentioned it a week ago, but now that he’s there, he’s likely to stay. To be honest, my great aunts house is still more convenient to this hospital (10-15 minutes) than my mom’s to the closer hospital (30 minutes from home). Where she is now is 45-75 minutes from home depending on traffic.

Our RMH offers a shuttle service to the 2 children's hospitals here. Is that an option there? Is she at the same NICU you were at?

No. Mine had a foundation house in the parking lot, but we just stayed at a friends’ house a couple miles away. My uncle is happy to drive her, her husband and my mom will be visiting frequently and she’s fully capable of uber/Lyft if nobody else can. Public transport is non existent. She will be more comfortable staying at our aunt and uncle’s in a cozy bed and where her dog is welcome to stay some nights.
