For the purposes of this check-in, we will define extended breastfeeding as breastfeeding beyond 1 year. Questions are repeated and suggestions are appreciated! 1. How old is your LO? 2. How many times per day does your LO nurse? 3.Are you dealing with any BFing-related challenges right now? 4. Did you ever come close to quitting BFing? What made you resolve to keep going? Pregnant & BFing Moms: How are you doing? Any issues with supply, pain, aversion? Questions for other moms? Tandem Nursing Moms: How are you doing? Any current challenges? Questions for other moms?

I guess I go here now!
1. How old is your LO? - 12mo
2. How many times per day does your LO nurse? - 4-5 times, including overnight
3.Are you dealing with any BFing-related challenges right now? - I posted last week, but night waking is draining my will to live. He *has* to nurse each time he wakes, or he will cry for literal hours. We started night weaning twice, and he got sick both times and erased all progress.
4. Did you ever come close to quitting BFing? What made you resolve to keep going? - Honestly, this current situation is the closest I've actually come to quitting. He's STTN six times ever, and I am a barely functioning human. I am still going because I absolutely love the connection we have because of nursing. It's more emotional for me than anything.
GTKY: What's your favorite smell? - Lavender anything. We grow it around our house, and I use lavender oils everywhere inside for cleaning and general smell-good purposes.

We were doing PLS night weaning method before he got sick, and it seemed to be going well. He still hasn’t settled back into a schedule since then.

gingy, Sleep, Changing Patterns In The Family Bed the other one you mentioned sounds pretty much the same- but i like the way that dr. gordon words the whole process. is it any easier if you send in your H when he wakes? when i night weaned my H was always the first responder bc it was easier for him to comfort them bc they didn't expect boobies. usually with any transition it's 3-4 nights of almost no sleep for you guys until LO gets it. it's tough with a 1 year old bc you can't really explain anything to them yet. do you think if LO was in your room at night that it would be easier to settle him without nursing? then you could transition him back out in a few months. hugs, i know it's tough!

vvvvvfee, he'll let DH comfort him but then screams again when DH puts him back in the crib. I'll send DH this link and see what he thinks. DS has been waking himself up pooping the last few nights, so no telling how he'd be sleeping if that weren't happening. Little turkey.

gingy I actually worked with Alexis directly when my son was younger and admin from time to time. He’s 16 months old now, and I still nurse. Sometimes he needs a snooze button feed around 5AM and sometimes he sleeps through it. What’s your bedtime routine and daily sleep schedule (morning wake, nap times and durations, and bedtime)?

1. How old is your LO? 16 months
2. How many times per day does your LO nurse? 2-4 times during the week and 4-6 times on weekends. 3.Are you dealing with any BFing-related challenges right now? Not really. Sometimes I worry that I’m ruining his dinner by nursing when we get home, but I don’t have the heart to change that. We’ve been apart all day, so he needs that connection. Sometimes it’s only a few minutes, and other times it’s 15 minutes or more. Today was the first time in awhile that he didn’t ask and actually wanted to go straight to his high chair.
4. Did you ever come close to quitting BFing? What made you resolve to keep going? No, I was very lucky that nursing has gone really well from the beginning. There were some frustrations, but nothing that got me thinking about quitting.
GTKY: What's your favorite smell? Really good question! Probably lavender or vanilla.

He went back to random wake times after that and we have a different night every night.

He went back to random wake times after that and we have a different night every night. The typical 1 nap schedule is about 5-5.5 hours of wake time before nap and 5.5-6 hours of wake time after nap. He has a long(ish) night and a 2-2.5 hour nap schedules, so he could be undertired. On days where he naps until 2, he would only have 4.75 hours of wake time. I would cap the nap at 1:30 and do bedtime at 7. Random wakes like that with no other explanation (HFM makes sense but not now that he’s feeling better) typically indicates a schedule problem. My son wouldn’t fight naps or bed, so the only indication I got that he was undertired was random night wakings happening over multiple days that previously weren’t happening. Once I fixed the schedule, sleep went back to normal. What’s your bedtime routine? Like...nurse, bath, books, bed? Is there a pacifier at all?

Nap is at daycare M-F, and 90% of the time is until 1:30, but they'll let him keep sleeping if the others don't wake him up (he just moved to one nap in the toddler room two weeks ago, so this is very new). He also doesn't fight naps or bed. I'll try the 7:00 bedtime; that would be better for everyone anyway. Bedtime routine lately has been bath, nurse, book, bed. He does take a paci at bedtime, and we keep a few in the crib so he can always find one. We used to nurse before bath, but he now goes straight from dinner to the tub and doesn't want to nurse in between since he's just eaten. I hate the time crunch after work. Thanks for your help here!!

gingyI feel you on the time crunch! It’s the worst! It was so nice when bedtime organically moved closer to 8 as my son got older. What about nursing as soon as you get home from daycare and then do dinner? There’s really no reason to “top off” before bed. PLS advocates for a 20-30 minute gap between the end of feeding and going to bed. Just a thought. I’m currently going through this weird trade off with nursing/dinner because I worry that nursing takes away his appetite to eat when he wants to nurse as soon as we get home 🤷🏻♀️ Does he even try to go after the pacifier? Try the schedule tweak for a week and then go from there. He could also just be adjusting to the new room/schedule. If I *had* to guess, he’s slightly under tired and has a suck = sleep association due to the pacifier and/or nursing close to bed (probably gets kinda drowsy since daycare is exhausting, right?). The pacifier is all well and fine at the beginning of the night, but as sleep pressure dissipates, for some babies, only the boob will do. Pacifier is no longer good enough. We had to drop the pacifier several months ago because Alexis explained to me that it can make night weaning more difficult for some kids. Pacifier is like the wild card of sleep lol. Are you in the PLS Facebook group? If you have the book, you’ll be able to answer the questions to get in.

gimmesugar, he has been nursing ASAP upon getting home since starting in toddlers. I hadn't even considered cutting out the bedtime nursing session. We might play with that. He loves his paci when going down, but he does spit it out after he falls asleep. He won't take it MOTN if DH tries to give it to him, though. Must. be. boob. So what you're saying makes sense. I was in the PLS group but left during a ragey FB purge lol. I'll get back in there.

For the purposes of this check-in, we will define extended breastfeeding as breastfeeding beyond 1 year. Questions are repeated and suggestions are appreciated! 1. How old is your LO? 2.75 2. How many times per day does your LO nurse? 1 (bedtime) 3.Are you dealing with any BFing-related challenges right now? Not at the moment. 4. Did you ever come close to quitting BFing? What made you resolve to keep going? I haven’t. I’ve been fortunate that things have went pretty well for the duration. Pregnant & BFing Moms: How are you doing? Any issues with supply, pain, aversion? Questions for other moms? Tandem Nursing Moms: How are you doing? Any current challenges? Questions for other moms? . Things are going really well. I was worried how dd would react to new baby and she’s doing great. She doesn’t want to nurse more or anything when she sees the baby nursing.
GTKY: What's your favorite smell? Hmmmm Fresh morning outside smell when the air is crisp.... no idea how to label that one, lol.

1. How old is your LO? 16 months 2. How many times per day does your LO nurse? 3 times 3.Are you dealing with any BFing-related challenges right now? Nope. Just trying to decide if we are ready to wean. I really enjoy our snuggle time so maybe not yet. 4. Did you ever come close to quitting BFing? What made you resolve to keep going? Not with this kid. Kid1 it was super hard to stick with it early on. Thank God for the nipple shield!

1. 2.8 years 2. 2-4x 3. No real challenges right now. Except jealousy from older sister that younger sis gets time that time with me. 4. The only time I contemplated throwing in the towel was when DD2 was 6 mo old and my husband was in the ICU for 2 weeks. My supply went to basically nil, but I kept expressing and my supply came back and here we are. Maybe I would have stopped, but DD2 has a lot of food allergies and was allergic to the hypoallergenic formulas, so there would not have been an easy alternative.

gimmesugar, I'm going to ask another sleep question. Hope no one else minds. DS has been in teething hell (a molar started to pop through Saturday), and has been waking even more often and not eating well during the day. Do I cater to this since he's not feeling 100%? Or should I try to KOKO with sleep training/night weaning?

Motrin has made a huge difference.

Motrin has made a huge difference. We haven't, and I realized that this morning. He's been in a better mood at bedtime (he loooves dinner and bath, so that puts us in a good mood for bed), so I hadn't considered it. But we'll do that tonight for sure.
