We have my cousin's wedding in October. Dress code is black tie optional. It's a Saturday evening wedding, oceanside at a fancy club in North Jersey.
Please help me find some options.
I love the idea of Rent the Runway but not being able to try the dress on until the day it's delivered makes me too anxious. I have been losing weight and am not confident in my sizing. I need to be able to try the dress on - either in-store or get it delivered with enough time to return if it doesn't work.
Do I have to wear a long gown? Can it be knee length?
My size is ~18 - so still in the plus size category (though I did fit into a 16 today!!!).
HELP!

Also - my budget - tippy top is $150 - though I would be more comfortable around the $100 range as the max. Less than that also works

I love a reason to wear a long dress and always do so for a black tie optional wedding. I think my last two came from ASOS within your budget. They have a huge variety. Their returns are so easy, so I just order several dresses and keep what fits the best.

I had a black tie optional wedding I wasn't able to go to because my child decided to be born lol.
I was going to wear: a black high low ballgown with a bright shoe and a fun clutch. Black tie optional is fun fancy ime. You can always go cocktail attire with fancy shoes/blingy costume jewelry.

In these cases, I like to hit a department store because they have dresses from so many brands. Best odds of finding something good.

I went to one last November. I found a few dresses at Macy's. 2 were about $125/each. I ended up finding one at JCPennys on clearance. It was a black dress that had long sleeves and was about knee length. I added some fancy jewelry and silver shoes.

I second going to Macy’s. I have a hard time finding something I like and that fits me well, so having tons of options to try on is my best bet.

I love an excuse to dress up extra!
My favorite dressy outfit I’ve worn in the last few years was a black bodysuit with a gold sequined maxi skirt. I got it from RTR but I’m sure something like that is easy to put together on your own.

I had almost written off anything but a floor length dress, so I’m glad I asked. There are so many more options for the knee length dresses.
I shopped a little bit at the mall yesterday but found hardly any options and was feeling discouraged. I think I should go back and now take into account the shorter dresses.

I went to a black tie wedding at the Willard in DC. Some people were in knee length dresses and some guys were in dark suits. I was 26 and stressed over getting the right floor length dress for weeks so I was surprised to see others who didn’t. But we all have budgets and choices.
I would still always wear a floor length gown to a black tie wedding. But black tie optional? I’d wear whatever I looked best in whether that be short or long.

In my plus size experience (which is LONG, and super current-lol) certain dept store locations carry better plus size sections. Like “my mall” has a great plus size section at Macy’s but nada at my Dillard’s. However, my moms Dillard’s has a wonderful plus size section.
So, if you have multiple malls within driving distance I would check those other locations out.
Also, Torrid may have some options—and you can order online and try on and return in store if it doesn’t work.

Talbots Also has options in your size. I’m a size 16 and find things there.

I had a similar experience - late 20’s, important work event, black tie. I obsessed about finding the perfect floor length dress (that would travel well). I ended up being like one of four women wearing floor length. I would have felt infinitely more comfortable in fancy cocktail. I think something along the lines of the black up thread would be perfect!

Definitely go back and check out different lengths. The "optional" part means go buy what you will get more wear out of and what you're comfortable in.

The last one is what I would pick. The black and gold one could work, but it's hard to tell on the hanger. The others seem too casual

I would not choose the zig zag one (too casual) or the polka dot one (too white for a wedding). The others I think you can dress up enough to be black tie optional.

I found a great dress at Dress Barn for an evening black tie optional wedding, if you have one of those near you. I wear anywhere from an 18 to a 22. I think I paid around $60-70. Tea length is always my go to for anything not listed as absolutely black tie formal.

I wish I had this for a wedding I'm going to tonight. This is exactly what I had in my head when I shopped today (we don't have a dillards). Should have mayyyyybe shopped before day of wedding but I was expecting not fall weather so was just going to take one of the sleeveless in my closet and it's cold and rainy so I wish I had sleeves.

Tlex, I really like that dress! It’s so forgiving and I’ve gotten tons of use from it. I got mine for way less, they nearly always have a seasonal version of it at Winners which I think is TJ Maxx for you guys. I usually see them for $60-90.
