tl;dr: Is it possible to lose supply altogether after weaning from the pump?
Background: DS's first birthday was Sunday. I spent the last two weeks weaning from the pump at work. We've continued to nurse on demand at home, anywhere from 3-5 times per day plus overnight. Yesterday after daycare, he nursed several times. Woke up three times overnight to nurse and never seemed full. Nursed all morning and was still whiny and grabbing at me for more. Could it be that I'm just losing my milk supply and he's not getting much? I really wanted to continue nursing as long as possible, but I wonder if we're nearing the end.

I know we have talked about this before but I went 2-3 months of nursing at home after I quit pumping. And while I'm sure that he wasn't getting as much as he used to, it worked well for the first couple of months when he was nursing at home regularly. It was only after he started rejecting nursing sessions and would go for longer periods of time without nursing that my supply completely tanked and we had to stop.
How is his eating? I feel like he is old enough not to have to nurse multiple times a night because he is hungry.

piratecat, he eats well during the day. He STTN Monday (and a handful of other times in the last few months) and usually only wakes once to nurse on other nights, so I know it's possible. But most of the time he will not let DH rock him back to sleep. He must. have. the. boob.

gingy , This is my DD too. She is 13 months and nurses 1-2 times MOTN with a random STTN thrown in there. I know she likely isn't hungry and its more comfort nursing. I am down to 1 pump a day but wondering if my supply will tank and if so it might help with the overnight waking. My first DD didn't STTN till 14 months and i stopped pumping all together around that time too and she consistently started STTN around 15 or 16 months. Sometimes I feel like its just developmental and they outgrow it on their own but we did continue to nurse until she self weaned at 18 months and supply dropped but wasn't an issue.

Also one thought, it could be the 12 month growth spurt too factoring in with him seeming unsatisfied and wanting to nurse constantly.

I brought him into our bed when he woke up at 5:30. He drained the side he was on, then ripped my tank open and went for the other side. I was dying laughing.

I think it could be a growth spurt, or some extra desire for nursing like teething or something. I do know of a couple of friends that did basically lose their supply after they stopped pumping at work, but if it is just a one off I wouldn't be worried. I slowly started weaning from 3 pumps per day around 14 months and stopped pumping at work altogether at 17 months. She's almost 3 and still nursing several times a day.

+1 could be growth spurt, teething, or he's getting sick. i stopped pumping at work when my two oldest were around 14 months- DS1 i nursed for another 3 years and DS2 for another 1.5 years. i really tried not to limit their nursing while at home from age 1-2 bc my goal was age 2. i wouldn't stress about it!

Thanks, all! He seems to be going back to normal-ish. I wouldn’t be shocked if it was a growth spurt, but he’s also been much more clingy since starting in the toddler class last week. He wants to nurse ASAP when we get home, no matter when he last ate. Sweet, clingy little boy.
