So I just learned that with a scheduled C section, the placenta can be donated just like blood or bone marrow, and then the amniotic sac is used for healing big wounds and such. Mind blown. We plan on scheduled C section so thinking seriously about this.
I also wonder about cord blood, I don't think we plan to bank Baby L's own for themselves but I want to look into donating it to a bank.
Has anyone one else experienced or thought about these options?

Our hospital didn't offer cord blood donation, but we wanted to do delayed cord clamping which I believe precludes donation anyway. It's something to think/ask about.
I had no idea a placenta could be donated. That's pretty cool.

I won’t be having a C section unless there’s a complication and it’s medically needed so I’m not sure that’s even an option for me but I think donating it would be great!! While we’re on the topic of placentas, can we also talk about encapsulating the placenta? I didn’t do it with DD but someone mentioned it to me a few weeks ago and I’ve caught myself being curious about it! I’ve looked up the supposed benefits (I say supposed because I read it hasn’t been proven or studied too much). I’m intrigued though and would love to hear others thoughts and experiences!

cch, I'm interested too but there's very little research on how helpful it is. This is a good summary: evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-on-placenta-encapsulation/. I'd do it if money wasn't a factor, but I didn't have PPD last time and I think other things are more important in preventing it, like having lots of support after bringing the baby home.

hrh wow I guess it's not that in demand. Well we aren't interested in paying to donate. cch I am intrigued by way the hormones in it might help. I'm really terrified of PPD and am at risk for it (having been clinically depressed several times, the latest caused by hormones - the progestin-based Nexplanon bc implant, and depression/bipolar in my family). But I feel like in the end I might be too squeamish to try it. I am adding this to my list of questions for the OB next week!

sunshiney, that was my feeling too. As far as placenta encapsulation, I'd search the boards. I know others have done it in the past year or two so you might find some good info, even if slightly old!
