Paul Ryan actually removed Rep Collins from his committees: I'm shocked he didn't just say it was troubling and leave it at that. He found a vertebra! (Just a single one; he's nowhere close to actually having a spine.) My guess is it's more like "no one can cheat to make more money than I have and it makes me MAD that he has more money than I do because he's a CHEATER. NO FAIR." Versus actual vertebra.

notblanche, thanks for the info! I agree that the scripts you have previously posted at would be better. Yours seem more open to a conversation, vs this seemed very cut and dry. And “knowing” people who have worked on these campaigns meant that instead of ignoring it I actually responded (nicely!) because I assumed it was a real human getting it. I was also unsure how the lists were made- did they just text everyone with a 312 area code number? Usually lists are created by taking voter rolls and comparing them to public cell phone records. Typically they are targeting voters from certain districts or possibly party affiliation.

So I’m curious- those text message campaigns to voters, are there results they are actually effective? notblanche because I know you were involved in this and might know Reapibding because I've worked on these too. I don't know if effectiveness has been studied, but here is my anecdotal reference. Often with phone banking (which I've also done over the years) you miss huge swaths of voters because they never answer their phones. With caller ID I almost never answer an odd number, some people do, but I know lots who don't. So with texting at least your first message is pretty sure to be seen by the recipient. Different text campaigns have differing goals too. I've worked on some that were primarily to encourage people to go vote. There wasn't a ton of expected interaction on those, but you still had people respond in Al sorts of ways. Some campaigns are a bit more involved and are to help voters understand a certain candidate and encourage voting. Much more interactive for the eople who respond. I've had some really productive text convos with people. So I'd say it's effective in its way. And it's absolutely meant to go along with traditional door knocking and other activities. But I think ity helps reach a younger voting population, which is so important. All this with the disclosure that "the plural of anecdote is not data". Do they supply you with the text? I don’t know how DH’s number got on a list but he was getting so many before the CA primary and it was driving him nuts. Not just receiving them, but namely the actual context of the text being short abbreviated text (like don’t 4get to vote, 2 instead of too, etc) which really turned us both off from the message.

origami, everyone goes here! I know how huge 3 seats in WA is. I'm really hoping Idaho goes more blue this year too. We ran out of Dem ballots in precincts in our primary this year. Which is hopefully a good indication of this fall.

Hey guys. I was gone awhile but I’m back now.
I was very overwhelmed with stress so I took a purposeful news break for my mental health. I am ready to be informed again.
We no longer have cable TV so I cant watch live television. Anyone have a rec for a daily news podcast I can listen to? Preferably something not too long.
I mean I’ll read the NYT but I want something as I’m getting ready in the morning or driving.
TIA!
*edit* Aaaand I just saw the podcast thread. Sorry guys. I’m rusty.

I’ve texted with red to blue (I think that’s the name) and they do have texts written up but they’re not abbreviated like that. And they ask you to personalize the message, especially if responding back to someone.

China is jacking up tariffs on US goods, particularly oil and autos: Hmm. So I wonder what the Trump supporters who claim they’re not racist, sexist, homophobic, etc., and are all about the economy going to say now that everything will tank.

I’ve started listening to the Daily every morning (NYT) and it’s a nice 25 mins with a story and then a few other headlines. I’m sure there are more reqs in the podcast thread but I thought I’d chime in anyway.

@ldubhawksfans the organization typically does supply the first text, but some software/groups allow for personalization on the first text. I've personally never had a script that used text speak, but again each organization does there own thing, so you could have vastly different scripts depending on the org.
That can also be part of the issue with text innundation. More than one org may have your number and groups like MoveOn and others also text if they've ever gotten your number.

For a quick news podcast I love Up First from NPR. It's 3 stories usually 2 domestic and 1 world focused and it's about 15 mins. A great start to the day to keep you abreast of the most biggest things going on.

China is jacking up tariffs on US goods, particularly oil and autos: MH works in the auto industry (specifically, manufacturing). His company is in panic mode.

Sigh. I really wish Danny would have won but it was really close and District 12 is up again on the November ballot. So he does have a second shot. Silver lining—the 12th district boundary goes right through the university district. Which is a ghost town right now due to summer, but will be very heavily populated with left leaning voters in November.

Dunno if US media is covering it much at all, but Canada and Saudi Arabia are in a bit of a tiff right now, and the US is being pretty stupid about it.

Apparently Maddow got recordings of Nunes in a private fundraiser and it’s a freakin doozy.
He admits there will be another Rosenstein impeachment push after the SCOTUS hearings, this:

Almost every time it turns out there are tapes, I get a massive Grinch smile on my face.
Not that we didn't already know Nunes was a weasel, but I enjoy having it public that he's squirming.

None of our allies appear to have our back on this one, so we have zero leverage. We will probably end up caving due to the economic pressures of the situation, which is such a shame.

Yeah, it's incredibly disappointing. I have lots of love for Freeland and her conviction, because she is a badass. She is. And it was a goddamn tweet, for heaven's sake. They are trying to silence all criticism and it is working. I am so tired of dealing with the temper tantrums of tyrants. I've already got a toddler for that.
