Talk to me about crib mattresses!
I've never bought one. Long story short but DD was never with a mattress. She was previously in a mini crib with one of those thin water proof pads.
Where is a good place to get one? Obviously cheap. Don't want to spend more than $100, preferably less. Do most people buy organic? Is a crib mattress really that important or can I just buy whatever is cheapest? Thoughts on Amazon?

This is over your price point so I'm not actually recommending it, but the link below is the mattress I have for DS. It seemed like a good mattress based on reviews when I was looking at what to get for DS, and they sold it at BRU. I liked it in person and was happy with how firm the infant side was so that's what I went with. Rather than starting the search from scratch for DS2, I was able to find the mattress on the Delta Children website and ordered from them so DS2 will have the same mattress as DS. www.deltachildren.com/products/beautyrest-comforpedic-comfort-nights-infant-toddler-mattressAs for your questions: - Target sells them if you want to see something in person first, otherwise I would think Amazon would be fine. - I do not think you'll be able to stay under $100 if you go organic. The one I went with has some certifications that are supposed to mean it's a "safer" option, but I never even looked at organic mattresses. - The firmness of the mattress is important for infants. It needs to be firm enough that it won't restrict breathing if baby ends up on their stomach. There are options out there like the one I bought that has a firm side for infants and a firm but not as firm side for toddlers. We have yet to flip DS's mattress because he sleeps fine, but I may consider it when we move him to his new room since he's almost 2. You can probably save some money if you go for a straight infant crib mattress rather than a 2-in-1 infant/toddler version.

We got the safety first heavenly dreams crib mattress from Amazon. We got it for around 50 dollars (the pink one right now is 50 and the white is 71 😒) we actually ordered a more expensive Serta mattress too to see the difference but felt that the safety first one was much more firm.

Nymeria covered that well above! If you have a BBB by you they usually have a decent selection with options starting in the $60 range. I'm ordering from Amazon this time, but only because I know what I want. Otherwise I think it's important to feel them in person. I like them to have a more fabric feel to them and not too plastic-y where they sound crunchy. Also, don't forget to consider the weight of the mattress itself! They're awkward sometimes to get out of the crib and the lighter weight they are the easier it is. I thought that was such helpful advice when I was choosing a mattress the first time! Not something I really would have thought of. Remember that it should fit snug in the crib with no spacing around the edges. I think crib/mattress sizes are pretty standard these days with all the safe sleep stuff, but just something to be mindful of. When you get one home, un-bag it so it can air out. I have a foam Serta for DS that I've been very happy with.
