I received the results of the anatomy scan from last week. The doctor said everything looked good, but there was one small area of concern. The ultrasound showed a 3mm (thankfully super small) "something" on the baby's brain. A cyst.
They want to do a follow up scan in 2 weeks. The doctor said that most likely everything is okay, they didn't find anything else along with this finding. Usually, if it's a serious issue, they find something else, like say on the baby's kidney or another major organ. The ultrasound didn't show anything like that.
They reviewed my blood work for genetic testing again, and since everything came back normal, that is also a good sign that there aren't any major genetic disorders.
Anyway, I am still nervous. This has been a tough pregnancy on me physically and I was just starting to feel better, and now this. The Doctor said he has seen this many times and the vast majority of the time everything is okay. I am trying to remember that and view this as a bonus ultrasound where I get to see my boy again. I have a lot on my side fortunately but I am still anxious since I have to wait at least 2 weeks to find out if this is in fact going to be a serious issue or not.
Any words of encouragement or experience with something like this is welcomed.

I usually stick to my BMB, but I wanted to share.
One of my coworkers had this same thing happen with her first. By her next ultrasound, the cyst had resolved and baby was born perfectly healthy. With no other markers for a problem, I'd say that's good news.
Still, I can imagine how scary it is to hear something like that. Fingers crossed the cyst goes away and the rest of your pregnancy is smooth.

badwolf posted on the GD board this past week that had a similar issue and it ended up being just a misreading of the initial ultrasound. I know a couple of people had commented about their experience with cysts in utero. Sorry you have to wait so long for the higher-level scan, being in the dark sucks. Let me know if you can't find the post, I can tag you in it.

I'm sorry! I'll be praying for you! I have actually heard this happening quite a bit and it was resolved by the next ultrasound. I'm really hoping for that outcome for you!!

First off, big hugs. It is so scary when they tell you anything is abnormal.
At my AS with DS1 they found an enlarged kidney and sent me to the MFM. While there, they also found a cyst on his brain. His did not resolve before birth and they followed to with an ultrasound at one day old and a few follow ups at a pediatric neurologist. All that to say, it resolved on its own a few months after birth. We were told the odds were that it would resolve, but that doesn’t make it any less scary. I’m sorry you have to go through this and I hope you get some peace of mind soon.

I'm sorry. It sucks and is scary to be told anything other that "looks perfect." Even when we know it's probably not a big deal. Everything is a big deal when it happens to our baby. I hope for you that this little things goes away quickly to give you as much peace of mind as possible

I'm sorry you got this news, I know the only thing we ever want to hear at every appointment is that everything looks perfect, and anything less can be anxiety-inducing. I don't have any personal experience, but as others have mentioned, there's plenty of positive anecdotes out there for these things resolving themselves. Try to focus on that, along with no other markers all pointing towards things will most likely be ok. I'm sending you and baby all the positive thoughts that this turns into another one of those positive anecdotes, and that you're able to get some reassurance at your repeat scan.

My sister had this exact thing happen with my nephew. By the next check it was gone. Her doctor told her many babies that have cysts develop usually have them disappear on their own. Good thoughts to you!

ladybrienne I’m so sorry. It’s horrible to have to wait. I want to add that my first son had a water cyst on his brain around the time of his A/S and it resolved itself by the time of his next ultrasound. Technology sees more things than we ever used to see before. Cysts are one of those things. I’m encouraged by the genetic testing you had and the lack of other markers. It’s all scary either way though and I’m giving you all my love and hugs during this time. Let me know if you need someone to talk to. Also sorry I know I don’t go to this BMB.

I didn't want to read and not reply. I have no experience with this but it looks like there are a few good anecdotes already. I'm sorry for the uncertainty and I hope the next scan is clear.
