So I have learned what my organizing style is vs what the one is that works for the kids (butterflies) and it has been a game changer! I have started implementing these things around the house since April and now 2 months later they are working for all members of the family even the husband.
I have tried other things before but it was only me that they seemed to work for or make sense to and it would be left to me to maintain. So...I am just sharing the information here in case it can help someone else too.

I also like how she drives home the fact that if you have tried other sytems or methods and they didn't work for you that doesn't make you a failure or unorganized but maybe doesn't speak to your natural way.

I am more of a lady bug but my kids are butterflies so I have switched a lot of things to labeled opened bins and it has been life changing for me and my house.

I am most definitely a butterfly. I’ve been trying to talk DH into building me some open shelves in my sewing/craft room so I’m happy to learn I’m on the right track there. I’ve tried organizing my fabric in a dresser but it didn’t work for me. I end up just stacking it on the table or on top of the dresser.

SD is definitely a butterfly. What have you implemented to help your butterflies? SD does well with labels, so that's one thing I'll continue to work on for her space.

I think MH leans towards cricket but he doesn't implement anything so they end up being piles or messes in drawers and behind closed doors.
The bins behind cabinets or in closets have been effective for him.
All are labeled and we are 3 months in and my house is so organized and everyone is just putting shit where it goes. I didn't make an announcement or anything I just put these bins and labels and it was like witchcraft.

I think this is DH also. He swears he doesn't know where anything goes without a label. Bitch, we've been in this house four years. You know where the spatulas go.

Cricket forced to be a ladybug with the financial drives of a bee. Butterfly-see-everything style for pantries and gift wrapping supplies/crafts only.
H is either a serious butterfly-needs-everything-out-where-he-can-see-it...or just lazy.

Thanks McBenny this is so helpful!
I am such a cricket. It's always confused me because I am so picky about everything being properly organized, but I'll also let messes pile up forever... This explains that I just don't want to shove things wherever, a hidden mess is more dangerous, permanent, and stressful than one waiting for me to take care of it!
MH is completely the opposite, and this really helps me think about how to get him better on board (he's also lived here for 1.5 years and had no idea where dishes go back, he won't keep his unused hangers separate, he always tries to "clean up" by shoving things in empty drawers or shelves).

My summer cleaning goals are well on their way, as a teacher the Summers are when all home projects happen. 1. Bin (as in store, not throw away!) or donate clothes that don't fit right now or we don't like - done today! 4 garbage bags donated 2. Windows and sills (halfway there) 3. Organize basement, taking the opportunity to cull donations 4. Wipe down walls/doors esp in kitchen (how do they suddenly get so gross?) 5. Thoroughly scrub bird's (huge) cage in preparation for finding him a new home

See, I think I am a cricket but I can live with ladybug. MH is like yours. I have changed my system to open labeled bins and OMG it is like night and day. Him and the kids have been putting things back where they go. It's like a miracle!

Dh likes open bins, but wants everything out and in sight. Preferably at sitting or standing height. Like his favorite is the top shelf of the refrigerator, everything goes there when he puts stuff in the fridge. There isn't enough counter space or open shelves to hold all the SHIT he has that he wants to have out in the open. Arg And double arg I that he LOVES little boxes, decorative metal tins, wooden boxes... but never seems to put anything IN them.

I'm a cricket. It makes perfect sense for me. I'm very detail oriented but I get overwhelmed when trying to organize/declutter because I don't have the time or money to do it to the perfect way I want it.

I took the quiz last night and made my husband as well. We are both bees. It's laughable how true this is when we read the description. We are both very much out of site out of mind and use hooks and peg boards a lot. I went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of bins. They aren't that pretty but they are functional and easy to clean. Everything has a bin now. I need to get more today. I also cleaned up my little ikea island and pulled out most of mu appliances put them on the island shelves so I'll be more apt to use them.
This is revolutionary in my home and I don't know why I didn't do this earlier.

McBenny, thanks again for recommending clutterbug. I bought a shelf last week at Target but hadn’t decided what to do with it as far as storage. Our kitchen is very small and gallery style. Keeping stuff uncluttered proves to be a challenge. I wanted to put the shelf here and make the most of the space. Because of the quiz and her talking about the dollar store, I went today and got some supplies from our dollar tree. This is what I have so far. It’s far from done but total cost for ALL the baskets was only $10 and the labels are all dry erase so I can change my mind about what to use them for. Labels were also from the dollar store- 10 pack for $1.00. Shelf is from target for $30. So, total cost $41.00 😀

Hello mind twin. My H's version of cleaning up a big mess would literally be to shove everything in a garbage bin bag and stick it in the garage.
