I went back and forth on whether this was a Politics board thread or Entertainment thread, but I think this is the audience for it.
Has anyone watched Hannah Gadsby's comedy special? Because you should. It is awesome. Even if you don't like stand-up. Maybe even especially if you don't. It is not really comedy, though it is clear from the first half that she is a very funny lady. It is a marginalize person finally telling her story in full, and it is so poignant.

I watched the first half on netflix (and enjoyed it!) and then my kid woke up. I will watch the second half (which I understand shifts gears), and will report back.

I'm seeing this recommended everywhere! It really is great. I saw the preview and thought it looked good, but it really exceeded my expectations. It pulled zero punches. I saw in an interview she talked about being heckled by men in earlier iterations, and it takes some nerve to listen to what she has to say and still believe you are the aggrieved party. She talked in an interview about seeing another comic (white male) just ripping into lesbians and how unsafe she felt at that show. She felt that this was just a taste of that "unsafe feeling" for them. She was really inspiring to me.

Thank you for the recommendation. This was a very thought-provoking hour and I really appreciate her humor and ability to be vulnerable while she spoke her truth.

I watched it over the weekend. She’s amazingly powerful and spot on imo. In addition to her words, I also loved her facial expressions while on stage. And the opening and closing scenes. They were perfect.
An interesting tidbit - she was diagnosed w/ ASD while writing the show and was in the midst of processing the dx. She didn’t include it explicitly in the show, but has discussed her dx and neurodiversity and the roles they play in her experiences of being different in subsequent interviews.

Ignoring my comment above- I watched it anyway. There were places it hit home a bit too much for me so I guess it wasn't too eye opening. There are people in my life that I think could benefit from watching it though.

Yup. The second half is very different from the first. She pulls you in w/ more typical stand-up comedy, then boom. What she has to say about the nature of comedy and the power of stories isn’t necessarily new, but it’s not something that gets dissected in stand up on a typical day. Some of my favorite women have left stand up for reasons related to what she shared. It speaks to a wider audience, but the venue definitely matters.
