Hi all. It’s July 1 here and I harvested my first green beans. They were so good! Crisp and sweet, yum. I’m getting excited for a (hopefully) bountiful summer!
What’s going on in your garden?

My bush beans are really sad, not sure what I'm doing wrong, but the plants are really short still, but starting to grow a few beans. Carrots are doing well, but my two year old keeps demanding I pull them up for her, so they're probably not getting as big as they would if left alone. Onions are good as well, although a few have dried up early and pretty small, possibly due to being trampled by my garden-destroying dog before we got the fence up.
My cherry tomato plant looks like it will produce my first ripe tomatoes in a few days, it's full of green ones and they're starting to turn color. Also it appears that my cherry tomato from last year (a different variety) left some volunteers, which popped up in my bed and are just starting to grow some fruit, so I guess I'll have chocolate and sungold this year! My other tomatoes look pretty good as well (San Marzano and Golden Jubilee). I replanted my peas that the dog and/or some kind of animal destroyed and they're coming back up, but we'll see if they survive this crazy 100+ heat wave. I also replanted zucchini in the bare spot where my cucumbers were.

I picked up a clearance blueberry Bush at Lowe’s yesterday. I can’t wait to get some berries, but I think I’ll be waiting till next year for those.

I’ve been away for five days during this awful heat wave and feared for my garden but overall everything looks okay! My big pot of petunias and bee balm look a bit fried but they might bounce back. The cucumbers are loving this weather and the tomatoes looked fine, lots of green ones already. I’m excited for them to start turning so I can add them to my salad.
My wildflower patches look beautiful and I came home to the first open sunflower! They’re my favorite.
There’s a mystery plant going gangbusters in one of the wildflower patches but I just remembered that I tossed the Halloween pumpkins and gourds back there last year. Maybe I’ll get a surprise pumpkin or something 😂

Bought a cucumber seedling last night at the grocery store since a few of my onions dried out and I have a little space in my raised bed for something else. MH was lamenting that all my cuke plants got destroyed, so I might as well try for some late-summer ones. Going to plant it tonight, hopefully after it starts to cool down a bit.

Dramaphile, a rabbit got into my garden a couple of days ago, and I brought the dog in with me when I went to water, not knowing the rabbit was there. They went running every which way through all the plants, including the potted ones. The rabbit almost ran into me even. The rabbit couldn't find a way out, and the dog kept losing it in the rhubarb, so the chase went on and on. (The rabbit did finally escape, just as I was about to go open the gate for it.) I can't believe I have a garden left after that.

I think my hydrangea is dying 😭 What symptoms is it exhibiting? What variety is it? It’s an Annabelle. I just got it this spring when I put the new garden in. I think it got too much water when we had this massive deluge while I was on vacation. It’s all brown and the leaves are withering up and dried out.

I would prune off all the dead leaves, put some acidic fertilizer on it, water well and see what happens. Such a bummer to lose a new plant.

Otherwise If it’s only a few you could pull them off by hand.

A store near me has all their perennials marked down 50% off and I’m having a hard time not buying all the things.

The morning glories are doing so well that they just collapsed under their own weight. I just rigged up some stuff to extend the trellis so hopefully that holds them.
I spy baby cucumbers! I’m very excited and have them netted off in hopes of deterring critters.
Ds picked the first cherry tomato the other day. Instead of eating it, Mato is now his best friend. He’s been carrying it around, asked to take it to bed with him, etc. He keeps talking about how it was a seed he planted and now it’s red. Which is super cute but could you please just eat it? Never thought I’d have to say “We don’t take tomatoes to bed with us.” 😂

Anyone good with tomatoes? My tomato plants are mostly doing well, but I'm finding some yellow leaves, some with black/brown spots near the bottom on two of my plants. They're both fruiting and seem to be ok and the upper parts of the plants are robust. Do I just prune the yellow leaves and keep doing what I'm doing, or is it something I should be treating? My cherry tomato plant seems largely unaffected, and we've been having a ton of hot weather and only occasional rain storms, so I've had to hose water a few times a week.

Ugh, I think I have early tomato blight. Going to buy some fungicide and do some heavy pruning and hope for the best.

I haven’t seen any bees in my yard at all. I think I need to manually pollinate my watermelon plant, dang it. I’ve never done it before so hopefully it’s not a disaster.

It was mentioned in the politics thread that bumble bees are listed as endangered. I had no idea since most of the news is about honey bees.

I haven't seen as many this year, either I have a friend who lost her hive because the winter weather was so unpredictable and kept going from warm to cold and back again.

One of my property lines is a giant hedge of rose of sharons that have exploded with blooms recently and the bees are loving them. I’ve seen a bunch on my sunflowers too. I planted some new native stuff this year but none of it is blooming yet.

I have a lot of petunias right now and some daylilies but not a lot of other things. I have big plans for this fall/ next summer to put in a lot more flowers.

I wasn't seeing any bees until I added bee balm to my yard. The bees are going nuts over it. It started with just one and now there are usually several out there all day long.
I put some hyssop as well and they like it, but the bee balm is really what they're after.

Pruned and treated all my tomato plants with copper spray to try and head off the blight, but I'm worried it's too far gone. I'm hoping at this point the tomatoes already on the plants have a chance to grow before they fully succumb. But at least I have a plan for next year (put tomatoes in other raised bed, treat early with copper spray, put down mulch to minimize soil splashing while watering. On the upside, my beets are looking pretty good, and I have jalapenos that look like they are ready to pick. Between the dog eating my pea, kale and cucumber plants and this tomato blight, I'm really disappointed with my garden this year. I had such a great harvest last year (my first) and was hoping to have the same again this year. Oh well, I'm hoping for a late-season harvest from my pea, cucumber and zucchini replants and at least I have a lot of carrots (which my DD loves) and onions and beets.
Do you think it's too late to container-plant some more tomatoes? Maybe I can find some bigger plants at the garden center. I'm in zone 5, and frost usually holds off till late October...

Dramaphile I don’t think it’s too late at all to grab a couple new plants. Definitely worth a shot!
