I'm filling in for a co-worker on a trip to a client site next week. Both the Client and the industry are super traditional; Client's office is in NYC. Can I get away with dresses instead of suits? If so- do I have to wear stockings? Paging helenahhandbasket

I think this might be industry specific.
I don't think any of my co-workers wear hose. I have never worked anywhere that legwear was a requirement. I work in a corporate environment, but it's not uber traditional, so maybe take my advice with a grain of salt. If you are really unsure, do you have dress pants? I see a lot of women in skinny dress pants + shell top + cardigan/ or jacket as a sort of suit substitute as well.
IMO, a tailored dress with a cardigan or a jacket is also great stand in for a suit.

I've never worked anywhere that hose is required, but I wear it with skirts to hide my pale legs and get a more uniform look on my legs. I find nicer hose to be less noticiable than cheaper hose.

leahcar, are you in finance or big law? Those are pretty much the last two strongholds for requiring hose with skirts/dresses, and even there it is starting to get some flexibility.

If it were my own company's office, I wouldn't hesitate to shed the hose. Since it's a client (and not even my own client- I'm a fill-in), I'm kinda thinking I need them. I think pants are preferable to hose in the heat so maybe I'll just ditch the dress idea altogether.

I work on the west coast and our corporate office is on the east coast and any time anyone visits out site from there they wear hose with their skirts or dresses. I agree that pants would probably be cooler and more comfortable if you can't go hoseless with a dress. Last summer I saw a lot of those straight legged linen pants with a blazer and I thought they looked pretty fancy.
