Also surprisingly that’s not even close to the worst that’s come out of reps mouth here I believe it. I’m just on outrage overload over here. 🤬 You should see the people defending her on the news story

Read this interview with Hillary, discussing the situation with immigrant children. She's been raising a lot of money apparently and has a lot of feelings. This line rang so incredibly true for me: Anyhow. I truly mourn what could have been.

dc2londonI thought I remembered that. I think it might have had something to do with SCOTUS rulings on New Deal programs as well. My history education was embarrassingly lacking. Basically everything I know about history or geography I've sought out on my own. I mostly only know it because I am fascinated by WWII and have read a lot about it, along with some on WWI and the intra-war period.

Interesting idea. The Constitution doesn't mandate a specific number of Supreme Court Justices--it only requires the existence of a court. So theoretically Democrats, should they take power, could add another Justice to effectively neutralize any extremist judges. I remember this info floating around when Obama was Pres (first term maybe) with people advocating that he add justices to rebalance the court, but the mainstream consensus was that there would be a huge backlash. Times have changed dramatically since then though, so a move like that might actually be supported, though doubt it would be controversial, and it sets a potentially dangerous precedent of every new president adding lifetime appointed justices, making the court huge.

FDR’s proposal was met with a great deal of resistance because there was fear he was getting too big for his britches and was taking too much liberty with the executive office. Once upon a time that was frowned upon and considered a threat to democracy. Apparently we only care about that when a Democrat is in office.
To be fair he was super frustrated because he was trying to make America and the world a better place for everyone. He wanted universal health care, he wanted people who were in need to be take care of and protected. Ironically the post WWII dream that FDR had for America ended up being realized in other countries, not ours.
ETA: it’s widely thought that the new deal didn’t help all that much with the depression, and that it was WWII and the military industrial complex that pulled us out of the depression. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had he and congress and the Supreme Court all been on the same page. He was only allowed to go so far. It may have been a disaster. Or we may have ended up with universal health care. Parental leave that isn’t pathetic. Subsidized childcare. I get there is the question of how to pay for all of this but we managed to figure it out with social security.

This likely will make you rage, but someone in the State Department is trying to rewrite a UN resolution on how racism is a threat to democracy in a way consistent with the Trump administration viewpoint. AKA that racism isn’t a big deal, xenophobia is a “very malleable term”, that “nationalism” isn’t a bad word. My favorite quote from the article was about how this employee is really unqualified for his position, saying “it’s the equivalent of putting a lieutenant in a 1 Star general position”. At first I thought “hey, just like Trump!” before realizing no, Trump is a civilian in a 1 star position. 😭😭😭 www.cnn.com/2018/06/29/politics/veprek-state-dept-un-racism/index.html

It’s chilling to realize how calculating and planning this administration is. Trump is often portrayed as rash, with attention span and temperament of a toddler. But he (and the people behind him) are so much more sinister than that. It’s really scary.

Oh my god. Every day I learn that this country is even more fucked up than I had realized. The trauma that we’re unleashing on children— American citizens and immigrants— is horrifying.
The City of Chicago just paid $2.5 million to a family because one of their cops put a loaded gun to the chest OF A THREE YEAR OLD GIRL while they beat her mother and grandmother.

I mean I’m sure there is fucked up ed ness everywhere but we could have a full and busy thread devoted to how fucked up CPD is. I hadn’t heard of this particular case but there are plenty others that are incredibly chilling in terms of what is being done to people- especially black people- in front of their children. And the schemes to cover it up go pretty much as high as one can go in the police hierarchy.

mb3, that’s horrific. I know/ knew things were effed, particularly for black families, particularly with so many police departments. Seeing that tweet this morning just really felt like a gut punch of a reminder of how messed up things are, on so many levels.

Stuff like what mb3 just posted is why I rage-laugh when people ask how I can stand living in the south when it's so bigoted. It's not all harmony and roses, but this shit is pervasive everywhere. Those two cases are horrifying.

Your story is downright horrifying. My kids just turned 4 and the thought of this happening to them is just.... there aren’t words. It’s just....basically what enchanted said. I think sometimes people in big cities, especially in the more liberal parts (or dare I say liberal bubbles) get sort of cocky and assume they’re doing ok when the reality is that racism and all sorts of other isms are very much alive and well in their own backyards. ***And I say this from one of the most liberal suburbs of Chicago. A city that prides itself on being liberal. Hell, 1 block away from my old apartment a woman called the police on a black man because she thought he was trying to hotwire a car. In reality he was working on his own car, doing something under the hood. But he still got arrested and harassed.
