The local rally is not until later in the afternoon and we are heading out of town that day. I am trying to figure out where else we can join, either closer to our destination or along the way.

I’m trying to convince H to go to the one at our state capital. He keeps going “but it won’t do anything! It’s already happened” Dude. Your complacency is part of the problem! Do you need me to call and have a chat with your husband? I don’t get what his problem is. His parents will be out so we can have them watch the kids. It’s at where I work, so we don’t have to deal with parking and such. He’s just being a baby and complacent. I’m going to drag his ass anyway. We can’t just keep sitting around and let this go on. All the excuses he could come up with are taken care of, so I don’t know what his deal is

I got this information about our rally:
Our March on June 30 will be a little bit less conventional. We are planning to have a March but also we are planning educational stations where you can learn certain things such as a Q&A with a paralegal. We will also have a children station to make postcards for children and families detained. In another station we will have a collection center where you can donate to the cause. This event is not only to March for the cause but to also educate everyone. We will address many subjects on border patrol and also on humanity. For without humanity who are we? Remember everyone this is a peaceful protest We are gathering together in solidarity not as blue or red.
We'll be getting back from vacation late Friday night but hoping we will go!

This sounds amazing! I'm glad they are trying to educate people. I'm looking forward to going!

I’m not sure if I will be able to attend the DC protest on Saturday, since we are traveling to NY that day, but I’m planning to attend an event in Alexandria on Friday morning.

Going to be hot as balls in DC, so I think I'm going solo and not bringing the kids😔 I think a white tee or tank top with shorts with pockets sounds perfect for a large protest. Would not want to wear anything more complicated. You can buy those printable iron-on decals at Michael’s/Jo-Ann’s, if you want to make your own protest shirt. If anyone going to the DC protest wants to borrow a clear backpack, let me know (though I doubt there will be enough security to make it necessary).

The one by me was cancelled and I'm really disappointed. Do you know why? The host couldn't get approved for anywhere. They couldn't get any permits or anything.

I was actually planning on emailing the host and thanking her for attempting to organize it and see if there's anything else that can be done.

I just found out more info. There is a pastor who is campaigning for Mayor of a nearby town. At his campaign rally he also plans to discuss and rally against the parent child separation happening. So I guess since he's already doing it, they won't approve a second event, even though he's not affiliated with the organization trying to do this in the first place. Sorry if I'm being vague. I'm trying not to give out too many triangulating details.

Still sounds like BS, frankly. So you can only rally if you go to an event for a politician you may not support? Cool. That's democratic.

Looks like I'll be marching on my own this weekend and leaving the kids with MH. It's going to be 115 F, 100% humidity, thunderstorms all weekend. I can't justify bringing the kids out in that when I also won't have an air conditioned car to get there or back, I'd have to take public transit where seats and a/c are... unreliable.
So I'll still be there, just without my fam. Lame.

There weren't any rallies within a few hours of me but I just found out that someone organized one for my city last night. Does anyone have a breakdown of the ruling that the kids have to be returned? I know it's going to get pushback here in Trumpland because "it's not even an issue anymore, they already are going back to their families" and I wanted to have a few rebuttals. From what I understand, the organization when the kids were stole was non existent, so we need to make sure that every family actually IS reunited. I know there is concern there are some families having parental rights terminated so the children can be adopted to white christian families. And there's still no clear answer to what happens to families after 20 days of being detained together, so there is still a risk of separation. Is that right?

And there's still no clear answer to what happens to families after 20 days of being detained together, so there is still a risk of separation. Is that right? No matter what happens now, it's worth speaking out about, even if reunification is perfect (which LOL, we know it won't be). There are families which can never be reunited because of tragedies after separation. (TW for self harm.) There was at least one story of a man taking his own life after being separated from his family. He was put in jail, tried to escape several times, put in a padded room because he was hurting himself, and then he committed suicide. So there is no reunification for that family, and the government should know that even if they do everything right from here on out, that was a fucking travesty and they should be held accountable. There are kids who are too young to speak or identify their parents, so it's unclear how exactly those kids (who were not documented because of the disorganization you mentioned) will find their way back to their families.

Since it was cancelled I'm just going to make a large donation to RAICES on Saturday instead. Is that still the best organization right now to donate to for this?

I had a horrible dream last night about the rally. Anyone want to try to reassure me that Trump wouldn't turn the secret service snipers against protesters? He won't even be there, right? He'll go golf.

He'll go golf. I will reassure you, it will be fine. It is natural to have bad dreams in this environment but I can't see that happening at this point in time.

shadesofgold, I'm having terrible, awful, no good dreams in that vein myself. I don't have answers, but I know people are working to make it as safe as possible. If he were to pull a stunt like that, life will never be the same. I don't think he (we) are there, yet.
