I started physical therapy for my hip last week. Each session they end with massaging the area. Yesterday (my 4th session) I had a different guy, and I was almost in tears during the massage. I assumed the muscles were just extra tight. But when I got out of the shower this morning, I have bruising all over my hip, side of my thigh, and my butt. I've never bruised like this before. Is this normal? I'm not super pleased. I really don't want to work with him again. The lady I did my other sessions with was great. I have been a little sore after a PT massage, but I have never been bruised. I wouldn't work with him again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's normal in the sense that a deep massage can cause bruising. It depends on your condition and the therapy goals but typically you don't want pain with a massage in a therapeutic setting. There are types where you want the bruising bc the goal is to break down scar tissue and the bruising/bleeding allows for healing in the area. But if that's the first time you've experienced pain with your massage odds are that therapist just used too much pressure. Next time, if it's hurting just tell the therapist to ease up on the pressure and if they don't then tell them to stop.

I would request a different therapist next time and I would say something to the office staff.

I just finished 10 weeks of physical therapy and I am actually pain free. I do not think that is normal, my PT told me the night after the first few week I might be a little sore but should not have any bruising or severe pain. She would also ask me constantly, is this ok or is the too much. I would request a different PT.

I think it depends. My first few sessions there was no bruising because my ITB was so tight they didn't want to apply a ton of pressure. Once i loosened up a bit they bruised the hell out of me. But it didn't really hurt.

Manual therapy should not be causing bruising like that. Soreness, absolutely. I would also expect redness to the area for a couple of hours at max, but for sure nothing that would remain into the next day. I would definitely say something - if you feel more comfortable with your previous therapist, I would ask to continue to work with her. And please tell whichever therapist you how things are feeling (and be honest!) when they are massaging the area - different people have varying pain tolerances and skin sensitivity, so feedback is always appreciated. Hope you feel better soon!
