On a different note, for everyone wanting to escape the heat, just come to Seattle. It's suppose to be in the 60's with rain all week. Yay PNW. Also, I'm torn between what to get for lunch. The best fried chicken place is on the menu for the delivery service but my favorite taco truck is coming as well. So, spicy fried chicken or carne asada tacos? The answer is always tacos. It is known.

It's entirely too hot here. We picked up a few things at the store, dropped off my car at the mechanic to have the timing belt replaced, and we're back home in the AC.
DS just surprised us. He told us he needed to go to the bathroom and actually went when we got up there even after much dawdling up the stairs and insisting DH and I both go with him. I might actually be able to get him potty trained while I'm off after all.

Hot here too and I'm trapped underneath a sleeping toddler with a fever.
I'm hungry and I have to pee soon, but this kid hasn't slept on me in a long time, so I know he feels really lousy.

jubilantsquirrel, I'm so sorry it's such a fight with DS regarding appointments. It sucks when they are that upset and you have no idea how to calm them. My anxiety skyrockets and I turn into a hot mess. I really hope it's a phase thing. I would go with the tacos. jewel, we have something going on here like that. Two of the managers here let slip that they are going to fire someone either this friday or next. It's review time and they fired someone two weeks ago. I was caught so off guard by that one. I get that their positions are results driven and that the company has low turnover but, I felt really bad about it. Now I'm just sitting here like: until it happens

jewel, can I ask what kind of work you do? Are you excited at the opportunity or dreading it? Managing seems to add on hours to the day. I work for an international energy research and consulting company. I have a pretty niche area of expertise, and this combined with strong female leaders in my dept (despite being a very male dominated industry), and a European company/philosophy towards work life balance had enabled me to push for flexible schedule, PT, remote, etc without sacrificing my career. I have worked for the company for 4.5 years and have WFH since after my first year, so long before I had LO, after my Mat leave and trying different things out until it felt right we settled on 70% of my old work load with general availability throughout the day but no set hours. The 70% is really hard to quantify though bc my responsibilities have really been changing a lot. I have been shifting to doing a lot more management, both project management and management of our junior analysts (unofficially for now), and more general oversight/high level stuff rather than the "in the weeds" analytics and travel I did before Mat leave. I traveled a lot seeing clients, doing conferences, etc before I had LO, but have not at all since she was born (and do not plan to). I keep an open dialogue with my mentor/our dept head and so far they are happy and I'm happy, I'm sure this won't work forever, we don't have any child care except for the occasional hour here and there (which is not a financial decision but a personal preference) but I will cross that bridge when we come to it. Managing people officially is something I've wanted for a really long time, but originally they didn't feel like it was possible unless I would go to our main US office in Houston, which was never going to happen... but shifting dynamics in the group and expanding areas of coverage have left out group very spread out. Our dept is around 14 people and less than half now work in the main office, vs when I started almost everyone did (I was in a small office in NYC then). I unofficially manage/help with the development of several people. I do think it will be incrementally more work to make it official but not like astronomically more work. So I'm a little nervous but mostly excited. Also they picked good "starter" people for me, lol. I never really imagined working after kids, but my company has made it too hard to walk away from. I absolutely love where I work and they just treat people right, plus the work is interesting and the money is good. Some days are hard and I feel like I'm crazy for doing this, but for the most part it's been great. On the bad days, I like to remind myself to never make decisions on a bad day ... I will keep going until it doesn't feel right anymore.

jewel, That's really fantastic that your company has been so accommodating in regards to a flexible schedule. I really wish more companies would take that approach. My job could easily be done remotely 100% of the time, but I would happily take WFH 2 days a week, unfortunately that's never going to happen. Our company allows people to WFH, but our senior manager is very against it. Three out of the five people on my team had babies in 2016 (myself included). We all asked about the possibility of WFH 1 maybe 2 days a week and our sr manager said no absolutely not. The other 2 gals ended up quitting to SAH, and maybe they would have anyway, but I really feel like part of it was the lack of flexibility with the schedule.

jewel, well then, let me congratulate you on your big move up! It's nice to see your career flourishing even as you maintain your family as a priority. Not the norm you see around here. In my experience moving on up means ridiculous amount of hrs at work. No thank you. I even had a Director try to "mentor" me (unsolicited) by saying I needed to work more hours to get ahead. Ummm, sounds great but who's going to take care of my kids? And aside from that, I actually like spending time with them esp this little. I could not handle having a conversation with that man so I just nodded and ignored him.

@junilantsquirrel i definitely don't understand why more companies don't do this. I've never worked at another place like this... granted not everyone is good at WFH, but my performance is better not in the office. I don't deal well with clock watchers or office drama and taking those things out of my life has made me a better employee. Even before LO I was not working. Every minute of the work day, but all my stuff got done and well and i respond to requests in a timely fashion. I don't see how being chained to a desk is better than that. I'm an adult and I don't need a babysitter... treating me well leads to me treating the company well in turn. If I have to work on a weekend or something is urgent or outside my usual scope I don't say no, and I don't even grumble about it. You are flexible with me, so I am with you. littlelion thanks! It's not really a promotion, more of a responsibility shift but I'm still happy.

Today I get to pick up my new car! I'm excited. We have to bring my DD though which could be less than ideal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Nothing too fun this morning. We've got to squeeze in laundry, a bath, allergy shots, and groceries before naptime. What kind of car did you get? 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS

I've been kind of MIA lately. I don't think I've mentioned it here, but H and I did a FET a couple weeks ago (my DS is an IVF baby), and found out it failed, so we've been doing some serious soul searching. I think between the failed FET, and a natural surprise pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage last year, and also a thousand other reasons, we have decided we're one and done, which has been quite the emotional roller coaster. But I'm glad we've kind of landed on a decision because making it was not easy. So today I've been spending time looking at toddler-friendly Caribbean destinations to plan a fantastic family of three vacation for this winter

Holy shit we actually get to take the kids to the events we wanted to and worked out a couple other things and had a super productive meeting. And bio dad was very reasonable and liked how things were presented. Bio mom had to work and that actually made this meeting go better...yeah!

Welll... the taco truck cancelled last minute and will be here tomorrow instead. When they sent out the emailing letting us know, it was too late to order from the delivery service, so I couldn't even get the fried chicken. This may or may not be real life footage of me throwing a hangry induced tantrum... But then a co-worker asked me if I wanted to go get teriyaki with her. So now all is right with the world and my belly is full and happy.

Hey All! I am trying to play around here more H and I are on a staycation this week since daycare is closed. We are experiencing the hot and humid weather as well so trying to find things to do with a 14 month old is tough. We went to Sea Life today. She seemed to have a good time and enjoyed it. She was a bit distracted by all the screaming and running kids though.... I think she almost got more entertainment out of them than the fish.

jillywilly, we saw tons of families with young kids in Aruba! The water is really shallow a long way out off the beach, and we got a great deal at the Marriott through Costco Travel. If you were looking for ideas.

If you were looking for ideas. H and I actually thought about Aruba - we went there as our "last hurrah" vacation before trying for kids and it was the BEST. It's an option - I've also been looking at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas for all the kid-friendly activities, plus, there's a direct flight to Nassau from where we live
