The DHS spokesman was NOT HAPPY. Aka “it’s unfortunate we can’t pay off these companies to do our dirty work any longer”

United and Frontier as well. And DHS is not happy about it. Boo hoo. Tyler Q. Houlton @spoxdhs It’s unfortunate that @americanair , @united, and @flyfrontier no longer want to partner with the brave men and women of DHS to protect the traveling public, combat human trafficking, and to swiftly reunite unaccompanied illegal immigrant children with their families.

AFAIK, detained minors who are not with family were unaccompanied. Other children in detention are there because their family had the choice of leaving the child with relatives/friends/someone else outside of detention or staying with the parents in detention. It's still an issue for children to be in detention and really, we need a better system, because some of the detention centres being used are cells in actual prisons. It's just... nowhere near what's happening in the US. And Canada does make efforts not to detain children at all. The much larger issue that no one is talking about, the huge black spot in any Canadian response to this, is the over-representation of Indigenous children in foster care in our country. We may not be putting them in jail, but we are certainly taking them from their families at a higher rate than any other group.

We certainly do need to get our own house in order. I’ll see if I can find the article again but I did read earlier that when separation occurs on our border, it’s almost always due to parent criminality. Either way, we have failings of our own, including the STCA.

I feel a bit like the city of Alexandria is trying to pull a fast one. Children could potentially be held at the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center and since yesterday there have been a flurry of headlines like this one: "...ending federal contract." Complete with a quote from the city's mayor. EXCEPT the article also says the center's board voted to not renew that contract two months ago. This isn't action in response to family separations but they're sure trying to capitalize on it. Am I missing something? www.whsv.com/content/news/Virginia-juvenile-detention-center-ending-federal-contract-486048991.html

And I got a generic response from my MP’s office saying that I will receive a formal response within a month.

What parent in their right mind would travel on foot thousands of miles, through trecherous and unpredictable terrain, for weeks with a fucking toddler for funsies? The only reason someone would do that is if they had literally no other choice.
What fucking world do Trump lunatics live in?

If you haven't already watched Kamala Harris speak in front of the Senate, it's totally worth watching. She is the best.

According to my Trump loving uncle they make the trek because here they get everything for free...eye roll for days. “They could have settled anywhere in those thousands of miles”, for real, I just can’t anymore.

Thanks misskilljoy. I used your letter as a guide and wrote to my mp this morning. I've written to him a few times before and gotten a response so I hope to this time as well.

@icedtea I had posted this in February- an asylum seekers from the Congo came to a port of entry and immediately asked for asylum. She and her daughter were separated for months. They've since been reunited but it appears only after the ACLU filed a lawsuit and some politicians got involved. they were separated for over 4 months. so this shows this policy was slowly going into effect before we realized it. www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/huppke/ct-met-aclu-lawsuit-immigration-family-chicago-huppke-20180227-story.htmlAlso it is inaccurate that to seek asylum you have to immediately present at a port of entry. You have one year to do so from your entry into the US. You can even apply for asylum during deportation oroceedings if you entered illegally and we're subsequently detained. Further, even Kiersten Nielson said that people are being turned away from legal points of entry. She said they were told to return when there were beds available, yet they are building new jails for kids, so not sure how this claim holds up. How exactly are people supposed to enter the process legally if we don't even allow them to enter? And lastly, we just removed two of the reasons people can use to claim asylum, domestic abuse and gang violence. Putting aside that our country has caused much of the destabilization that led to the gang violence these people are fleeing, we are making it very hard for people who are truly suffering to even try to claim asylum.
