My kid was showing me bumps on his legs and I'm 99% sure it's poison ivy. My H is horribly allergic so I'm hoping my son isn't. Right now it's just on his legs and I've slathered the patches in Technu.
Since the rash is present it's no longer contagious right? His last soccer game is today and he's really looking forward to it. His last swim is tomorrow too.
Fingers crossed he's not allergic.

If he has the rash, he is allergic. The rash is the reaction. No allergy, no rash.
If the bumps are raised and not oozing, then he isn't contagious. Once the blisters open, the ooze is what spreads the rash. Wash the area with blue Dawn dish soap & cool/warm water to help get rid of the oils.

Will his soccer socks cover the rash? Pretty sure it only infects other people if they come into contact with the rash. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong Eta: posted at the same time as HE. I guess I'm misinformed

Thanks Ladies! I thought it was like chicken pox as far as once there's a rash, it's not contagious.
I tried to convince him that his socks would cover it but he's still afraid to go anywhere with it haha.
I thought maybe it might be better to cover it at night especially so he doesn't scratch.
Hopefully he milks it less than H.

We have poison oak on this side of the country and I am highly allergic. As a kid my biggest issue was scratching it and spreading it to myself, especially the first day when I wouldn’t realize what was going on and would just mindlessly itch.
I recommend the Aveeno oatmeal baths and if it swells underneath the rash some benedryl.
I agree that the chlorine will actually help a bit.

What they all said. Wash it really well with Dawn then give him some allergy meds (benadryl at night, allegra or whatever during the day).
The oil is what causes the reaction so as long as you wash it well to begin with, then it should stay contained. Just be sure to wash whatever clothes/shoes/etc he was wearing.
Stick him in the pool asap. The chlorine will be great for it.

I have severe reactions to poison ivy (probably like your H), and if your son does, it’ll happen fast.

Thanks everyone! I washed all his clothes from the last few days and it was new sheet day anyways.
I took him swimming at my cousin's pool and have been covering the rash with itch relief cream. The huge patches are currently covered with gauze so he won't scratch them.
It doesn't look as bad as when my H gets it. His spreads rapidly in hours and usually gets infected unless he starts meds at the first bump. Last time his eyes were sealed shut for a day until the meds started to kick in.
H is currently avoiding being in close contact haha

R is just getting over a bout of it as well. If he gets too miserable you, you can toke him for either an oral steroid or a steroid shot to help it heal faster. I put cortisone cream on him during the day and then gave him Benadryl to help him sleep at night. All per dr direction.

It didn't look like there were any new spots today when he got up but I noticed a new patch near his eye after his swim lesson today. The Dr called in prednisone so he just took his first dose. Hopefully it helps it from spreading more.

Okay I need to bump this thread because now MY kid has poison ivy. He must have got it yesterday afternoon and just this morning he is screaming that his legs itch and is all bumpy.
So I know what to do to keep him comfortable at home, but what about school?? I'm going to load him up on Claritin and ibuprofen this morning but will the nurse be able to give him anything? I know he's going to be itchy and complaining later this morning.

Fuck. It's on his butt. How??? probably from wiping while using the potty. Which... I have first-hand experience with. 😂😂😂😂 Sorry. But ok, makes sense. And he didn't shower last night because him and H were at a school science thing until after 8. So I'm sure the oils just sat and spread all night.

My kid is on day 3 of prednisone and it definitely calmed it way down. The patches are just flat and red now and no blistering since he started the meds.
I use the tecnu calagel 3x a day starting when he gets up. I refresh it mid day and reapply after bath. He does say it hurts at night so I've done Tylenol. I bandaged the really bad spots at night and had him wear pj pants.
The school asked he wear pants so other kids won't touch it. Luckily it's just two days and it will only be in the 80's but no humidity.

Okay, well I put him on the bus. He seemed more comfortable after ibuprofen, Claritin, and I slathered his legs and feet in Gold Bond itch cream. I put him in pants. Hopefully he does okay this morning.
I finally got through to the school and they said I can bring in ibuprofen but they don't have it there to give so I'll run by in a little bit to take some in before he's due for another dose. Unless of course they call me to pick him up before then. 🙄

We've always used zanfel with scouts and it can clear up the itching and burning very fast. Some people don't use it cause it's "just expensive soap" but we've had good results.

I got it at CVS a few years ago for my H and I did see it at Rite Aid the other day when I was picking up the prescription. They had a few different creams and washes but the calagel is clear and cooling. It's in a black and white bottle under the name Tecnu. Calagel is like the type of cream it is under the Tecnu brand. I only say this because I couldn't find it for my H a few yrs ago until the pharmacist told me haha.
