I really want to talk about this, though it's somewhat local so I have no idea if it's a more broadly known case.
A college student accused 2 student athletes of dragging her into the bathroom at a party and taking turns raping her. She later admitted the sex was consensual and is now trying to spin this whole thing to somehow be the fault of the police. The woman was white and the men she accused were black.
Here's one bare bones article: www.newsday.com/long-island/crime/false-rape-accusation-sacred-heart-1.18990564
Here's another article that points out some pretty ugly racial politics at play, which (of course) local reporting is by and large ignoring: www.theroot.com/lying-white-woman-who-falsely-accused-2-black-men-of-ra-1826112924
I have zero sympathy for this woman. She was willing to destroy these 2 men's lives - and it's both gross and unsurprising that she accused 2 black men - in attempt to gain sympathy from some guy she was interested in. The men were forced to leave school and they lost their athletic scholarships in the immediate aftermath, not to mention having their reputations absolutely tarnished. On a more broad scale, this case feeds into the false narrative that false rape claims are a common thing. It's toxic all around.
She could have been sentenced up to 6 years and ended up with 1 year of jail time.
And here I am, with a shit ton of conflicting feelings. She 100% deserves to be punished - what she did was morally reprehensible and 2 innocent men paid a price for her actions. But rape is indefensible as well, and our judicial system and society as a whole has a pretty awful track record when it comes to punishing rapists. Except let's be real, I can't compare this case to Brock Turner (for example), as 2 black men would likely not have received a mere slap on the wrist if they'd been convicted. We can't ignore the racial component of this particular case. BUT I still worry that this could be a slippery slope - could we see decreased rates of reporting because women worry that if they choose not to move forward with charges or if their rapists are found innocent, that the women could fear judicial retribution? Which is possibly and probably nuts but in this day and age, I just don't know. I'm glad the truth came out but this whole thing is so sickening.
ETA: The more I think about this specific case, the more I realize it's not her jail time that bugs me. We talk about the myth of the false rape claim or at least the myth that it's a common thing, yet historically it's been used as a weapon by white women against black men. So yeah, we should absolutely punish such vile behavior. I think my frustration is misplaced and should be focused on the blatant judicial leniency that white rapists benefit from.
