I want to do away with your traditional 4 year degree. Why four years? So much time is wasted. We should be focusing on trade schools and revamping college majors/areas of study to have a degree length reflective of that particular industry/area. Not everything should fit into this perfect 4 year degree program. Some more. Some less. Otherwise, it feels like some degrees are just fang receipts and not a mastery of subject. I disagree. The 4 year college experience is way more than academics and building your professional/trade career. My five year plan was focused on hanging out with friends, playing rugby, and drinking beer.

There are many lines of work where it's actually more detrimental than helpful for you to fulfill your 2 weeks notice in case you are "stealing trade secrets/clients/etc". You essentially get walked out same day with a "no hard feelings but... BYE"

I've never worked at a company that has anyone actually serve out their two weeks. I've left on nice and not-nice terms from many places and basically you are done the day you put in your notice. I would say this is really typical of accounting, legal, finance, real estate industries, where you have access to info that can cost the company money. IME too, when you give your notice, security is getting called and you’re leaving.

Okay but this would require teenagers to choose their path quite young. Some countries do this with aptitude tests starting at an early age. Here, it’s 16. And a lot of teenagers aren’t mature enough to handle the answer that’s given to them. I think 4 years is fine, it’s the prices that are outrageous.

I finished in 3 and I will discourage that with my kid. College is the time to fuck a lot, drink a lot and do safe drugs.

Fuck no to shortening college. Those 4 years were the besttttt. I mean, if you want to shorten it, work to graduate early. But some of us have no business having a real job during that period of our life and college is the best place for us. Sometimes I’m sad I didn’t stay longer. I really loved that time. The skinny, poor, hot mess express that I was.

I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

But the system is slowly changing.

My sister is graduating undergrad next year after 2.5 years. I’m amazed at her level of focus and motivation. I don’t relate at all but she is happy so I’m happy for her.

Yea I have no idea how it’ll be here. I’m one of 2 non exec employees with access to our cash accounts so they could tell me not to come back. I think that’s kinda silly though because obviously I’m not going to wire myself millions of dollars. Obviously.

fikafairy Happy birthday! I would clearly tell him what you want and expect for your birthday. I have. I told him yesterday, for the 11th year in a row, that I want to continue the tradition my family had growing up - "waking" up the birthday person singing happy birthday and some kind of breakfast or beverage. For my parents, we always brought coffee. I have made sure that DS gets it each year on his birthday, and honestly it's usually a toaster waffle. He went downstairs this morning to eat his own breakfast, didn't even start the coffee running, and then came back up and went to bed. I got up, took a shower, got myself dressed and got DS dressed while he rolled around hitting the snooze button. Then even after he got up and was asking about DS's lunch, and if I started coffee - nothing. I left for work with nothing. I mean, I don't know how much more clear I need to be. This is the same conversation we have had every year, and at least before this he would usually SAY something, even though he wouldn't do anything really. Dh is the same way. I told him for years all I wanted was a cake. Just a cake. He would never remember and it would turn into a fight. I ask for nothing now and expect nothing. It sucks and I am slightly annoyed every year, but less so than I was when I was reminding him what I wanted and he would forget.

I couldn't disagree more. You are assuming every 18 year old knows what they want to do with their life. Plus those electives in college is what made me realize what things interest me and I feel like I gained a lot from those classes that I still use just as much as those towards my major And plus also college fun
