So DD never took a pacifier, but ended up sucking her thumb, which really seems no better. But I don't know much about pacifiers and I can't decide if we're going to try to get DS to take one.
When did you introduce the pacifier? Did they know how to keep it in at first, or did you keep having to put it back in their mouth and get them to suck it? Would you have done anything differently than last time?

Same here. DD hated a pacifier but it was love at first sight with her thumb. She’s 3 next weekend and she’s pretty much stopped with the thumb other than sometimes when she’s going to sleep at night.
I think a thumb is better in some ways. Quitting a pacifier is super hard the older they get, and the whole getting up 20 times during the night to put it back in sounds annoying.
Having said that, I’m pro-pacifier for kids that it works for. If Baby takes it, great. However, W has no interest either. She’s started sucking the back of her hand. Will be interesting to see if she finds her thumb soon.

DS always loved the pacifier. He took to it right away but they definitely need help keeping it in for awhile. I think part of why he was such a great sleeper as a baby was because he was pretty much content if he had a pacifier.
I hope this baby takes one too because it made our life so much easier.

DS1 didn’t take to it and was a horrible sleeper. I’ve introduced it to DS2 but I’ll try to keep it for nighttime sleep only.

I’m a big fan of pacifiers, they help with sleep and I’ve also read that they can help prevent SIDS (they act of sucking, so a thumb would do the same thing).
I use soothies starting from birth. Introducing one so early hasn’t had a negative impact on my breastfeeding, but I’ve heard that some people don’t like to use one in the first month. They get wubanub pacifiers now.

I just introduced the pacifier to L (he’s 4 weeks today) and it’s helped a lot with evening fussiness when he wants to suck but doesn’t want milk.
V used one, and it helped a lot for him (it didn’t help with sleep quality, nothing helped with that), but it kept him calm down, in the car in particular. We got rid of it after his second birthday with very little issue.

My toddler used one til about 18 months. She didn't like the soothies style but we did the avent ones.
We were encouraged to use one in the NICU with H as it helped her learn to suck. We're currently using the Nuk pacifiers. I had a few different styles that were freebies with registry stuff. I just used those to discover which one she liked and could keep in her mouth.

I’ve always been pro pacifier. But I’m pretty pro doing whatever it takes to keep baby happy. Lol Having said that. None of my kids have loved the pacifier. I introduced it to each of them basically immediately. Probably within their first two weeks. I think the longest was my daughter who took it until about 4 months. Then she was just uninterested

DD liked hers until she discovered her thumb and then it was out. She couldn’t keep it in her mouth early on but she’d fall asleep and be fine when it fell out. It was good for rough car rides and things too. I’ll offer one to this one early on.

We use those Avent ones (think we got one in the hospital this time). They gave him one while we were in the hospital so I figured they must have thought we were ok introducing right away. I just use them more when baby wants to suck and my nipples and arms are tired. I'm team whatever gets your kid to sleep.

DS would take one but he became a thumb sucker. He wasn’t crazy about the paci.
E will not take a paci right now and i wish she would at times.

So when you put them to bed with it, do you just make sure they're good and asleep with it in their mouth before putting them down?

I've had two who hated all pacis and never sucked thumbs. This one actually takes the paci. It's kinda nice. I got him a wubbanub.

She likes the wub-a-nub one and it stays in her mouth a lot better. We also have one called a PATpat and she likes that one too.
