I hope I'm not duplicating a thread, but does anyone want to discuss the series finale of The Leftovers? Thoughts, complaints, whatever? Do you think Nora was telling Kevin the truth over tea?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone else here watched this show. It ended up being one of my favorite TV shows ever, even though I almost stopped watching after the first season. I loved the finale and thought it was beautifully written and acted. I appreciated that it was left somewhat open for interpretation yet it also seemed to wrap things up nicely. {Thoughts on what Nora said, spoilered just in case} When I was watching the show in real time, I believed everything Nora was saying and was glad to finally know where the Departed went.
Upon further thought and reflection, I don't think she was telling the truth. I think it was a story that she made up to come to peace with where her children went. The thing that stood out to me was that she said in her story that she had to ask/convince the inventor of the transport machine to build a second one so that she could return back to the world with the 98%. If the inventor scientist guy had already been in the place with the 2% for years, wouldn't he have built a second machine already? Wouldn't there be a lot of people that would have wanted to travel the other way to return to their loved ones? Maybe that's a silly thing for me to focus on and I doubt the writers intended viewers to focus in on that... but for me that was what made her story not true.
But the beauty of the writing in the finale to me was that it didn't matter if her story was true or not. It just mattered that Kevin believed her and that they were back together.

Ahhh...I loved this show. I agree with what you have in the spoiler ceejayI mostly liked the finale. Loved the last scene with Nora and Matt. I am a huge Christopher Eccleston fan, so any scene he was in, I was hanging onto. Love Ann Dowd and want to see her in more stuff (currently watching her in Handmaid's Tale)

ceejay I thought the same thing about why others hadn't traveled back..that didn't make the most sense. All in all though I really enjoyed the show. It was like a better version of Lost. Still left a lot of unanswered questions but I felt much more satisfied with the end of it all versus Lost where I hated everything about it after the finale.

Resurrecting this thread 6 years later in case anyone has watched it since. 🤣 I just binged it in 2 weeks and what a ride. It was excellent though. I think top 10 of all time, wonderfully done and acted.

Do you think Nora was telling Kevin the truth over tea? indo, but the big hole for me is mentioned above - after all that time she was the only one that had regrets and wanted to come back? And convinced someone to build a hugely expensive machine for her? It didn't land, but how else would she have come back unless the whole thing was a hoax and all those people were in on it which would feel like a different plot hole. I have to process everything, but overall it was so good and I was completely enraptured by it.

Maybe I’ll do a rewatch!
