Big sis had tonsils and adenoids out last summer and it was pretty horrific. Lis sis needs a second set of ear tubes and has 70%+ blockage of her adenoids and ENT says they need to go. I'm envisioning tonsil recovery part deux. She's 2.5 yo. How bad is it?

The adenoids will be way easier. My kid had both put but I think the majority if the after was from the tonsils.

Adenoids are so much easier than tonsils. She'll be able to eat/drink normally as soon as she feels ready. Just be aware that her breath will be horrible as she heals, but that it's completely normal.

DS2 got his adenoids out & a second set of tubes on a Monday morning (he had just turned 2), and was back to daycare by Wednesday.
I bought a bunch of soft foods, but he ate normally. He was just very very cranky on Monday, but the anesthesia had him all screwed up on sleep and he didn't nap.
The death breath is real.
I don't know if the blockage is causing any hearing/speech issues for your DD, but I noticed an improvement in DS2's speech the day after surgery. He wasn't delayed, but his speech got a lot clearer from that point.

My daughter had her adenoids out when she was 3.5 years old. It was no big deal. She took nothing for pain and we had to fight with her to just relax that same afternoon after the procedure. Good luck to your little one!

We gave him one dose of Tylenol when we came home, but beyond that, he was fine. It was the best decision we made for him and the easiest surgery ever basically.

+1 to the death breath. That was no fun. DS's adenoids were so large they affected his breathing all the time. For the first few days, he sounded the same, but after a couple weeks, he stopped snoring while awake. It was such a weird thing.

Well this sounds promising! Thank you all for the feedback. The ENT does them on Fridays. Sounds like there is a real chance she'll be good to go by the following Monday.
Did you have any problems with them growing back?

I've never even heard about adenoids growing back. His ENT never mentioned that either.

Did you have any problems with them growing back? We were told that the younger they are when it happens, the more likely they are to grow back, but that the process is generally is pretty slow and by the time it happens, the child has grown enough that it's not an issue. We are preparing mentally for the fact that it's probably pretty likely. We recently found out that multiple kids in his family have had them removed as toddlers and then again as late as 9-16. DS had his removed at 8 months.

My 18 month old just had his 2nd set of tubes put in and adenoids removed last week. Easy recovery. The ENT just told me to keep him home 2 days instead of one. So he went back to daycare later that week.
Although 4 days after surgery he had another double EI, so that's awesome...

I had my tonsils and adenoids reminded when I was 2.5 yo so almost 30 years ago. I have minimal tonsil regrowth and my adenoids are still gone.

Can I tag on a question to this post? My DD is having a 2nd set of ear tubes this coming Friday & they had said adenoids was something to think about as well, but we’re still waffling because some things online make recovery sound worse than I thought it would be. Something said sore throat for 2-3 weeks. Did your guys’ kids have sore throats for that long? Mainly I worry because we have a vacation scheduled 10 days after the surgery & that is NOT something I want to mess with. We still have this week to decide though.

A 2-3 wk recovery sounds more like a tonsil removal, not adenoids. DS2 had his adenoids out and second set of tubes at the same time, and he didn’t seem to have any pain after the first couple of days post-op. And like I said upthread, he was eating normally by the next day. He had them out in early December, and was completely fine the following week for a Christmas party and DS1’s birthday party. Aside from the really bad breath.

We also had a good experience with adenoid removal. DD got a set of tubes at 8 months and I loved them but she still got a ton of ear infections, they just didn't hurt and could be treated at home. She needed them again at almost 4 and this time had her adenoids out. She has been sick a bunch of times since then but hasn't gotten any ear infections and the recovery was barely worse. So glad we did it. We had them done on a Friday and she was a little sore over the weekend but fine with Advil. She was back to normal by Monday. Nowhere near as bad as tonsils. But yes to the terrible breath.

When DD had her second set of tubes put in, they took her adenoids too. She was back to normal within 24-48 hrs. We had been told soft foods but I think that’s a precaution because she was eating normally the next day. It was a super easy recovery. She’s having her 3rd set of tubes and tonsils are coming out in July and I’m dreading that one because I remember how hard that recovery was for DS

My son had his adenoids removed a few months ago at 2 yrs 10 mos. It wasn’t much different from his tube surgery in terms of recovery. He was back to himself that night and eating normally (for him) by the next day. He was a little fussy and clingy for a week, but I think that was more from the experience than actual discomfort. He went back to daycare two days later.
The worst part, truthfully, was him waking up to the IV in his arm. He was hysterical about it. They wouldn’t let him take it out until he ate a popsicle and drank juice, but he was so worked up/fixated on the IV that it took a while to accomplish that. Also, the horrific breath, but that only bothered us, not him.

DD had her adenoids removed at 2. It was no big deal at all. The worst part was coming out of anesthesia. She woke up terrified and cried for like an hour straight afterwards. She was very clingy the rest of the day but was 100% back to herself the next day.
All that said it didn't do much to stop her sinus infections. At all. Tubes were life changing. Adenoid removal...not so much.
